When keeping your bike in storage, which is better: deflating the tires, or keeping them inflated to the optimum pressure from time to time? by tmiadocin MTB

[–]VancouverIslguy 11 points12 points ago

Keep them inflated. They'll gradually lose pressure over time and it's good to pump them back up. I deal with a lot of bikes that need tires replaced because they deflated entirely and cracked along where the tire folded.

It's extremely fun. Especially when you let one whip really far out.

Absolutely love mine. Feels significantly better than the Vivid air I tested out before it.

Working on a potential build; would like some feedback by dx40shin MTB

[–]VancouverIslguy 1 point2 points ago

Solid build however I'd look into a different brake set. BB7's are nice but it's hard to beat hydraulics when it comes to performance. A set of XT's to match the rest of the kit wouldn't up the cost by much in the end.

Nice looking rig sir. How you liking the Vector? I've got nothing but good to say about mine.

A question to my fellow GoPro users by wormholebeardgrowthin MTB

[–]VancouverIslguy 0 points1 point ago

http://imgur.com/QoDNh There you go. You can just see the small arm coming out from the mount. This setup is nice because you can control angles quite well with it.

A question to my fellow GoPro users by wormholebeardgrowthin MTB

[–]VancouverIslguy 0 points1 point ago

Side mount with the mount running horizontally. You're gonna want to look at it with goggles on the helmet (if you wear them) and place the mount below the goggle strap. The camera will use two arms at that point, one to go straight out of the mount horizontally and the other attached to it to orient the camera vertically and about in line with the goggle strap. I'll take pictures of my setup later if you really want.

What's the strangest thing you've done naked? by Rhesonancein AskReddit

[–]VancouverIslguy 5 points6 points ago

Went drunken skinny dipping with some friends one night a few years back. I decided it would be fun to jump off the 20 foot high dock. I distinctly remember the feeling of the water travelling up my legs before delivering a cold watery cock punch to my man tackle.

Buying a DH/FR bike, thoughts on my options by Ash_Din MTB

[–]VancouverIslguy 2 points3 points ago

Out of them all the Operator is the best deal. DH geo with FR components. You could throw a dual crown on there if you really wanted as well.

Removed bottom bolt on fork by mistake by piku17in MTB

[–]VancouverIslguy 2 points3 points ago

Luckily with the Sektor R the damper is separate from that bolt so nothing should have changed there except for perhaps the rebound. Take this as an opportunity to throw about 15 cc's of 15 wt oil in there as replacement bath fluid and all should be fine. Take a look at sram.com/service if you want as well for a more in depth look at how it works because it's actually fairly simple.

Who says you can't go mountain biking on a bike from Wal-Mart? [Fixed] by cuban_jesusin MTB

[–]VancouverIslguy 9 points10 points ago

Fun fact about this vid. The boys couldn't stop. The brakes on those bikes didn't work so they were planning shots around having nice soft bushes to stop in out of frame.

Are You a Good Bike Shop Customer? by matbar20in MTB

[–]VancouverIslguy 1 point2 points ago

I fail to see the humour in this. Obviously we read different articles because this seems like a pretty good guide on how to get on our good sides. You come into my work and expect me to roll back my already shitty margins so you can save $50 on a bike. I'd rather give that deal to a person I've fostered a relationship with.

Are You a Good Bike Shop Customer? by matbar20in MTB

[–]VancouverIslguy 1 point2 points ago

The price on parts is correct given what we have to deal with in a shop. There's a general attitude that shops are rolling in money based on the price compared to online retailers but let me tell you we most certainly are not. Markup on bikes is atrocious and the only sure money makers are parts.

How can I learn to "throw the bike around" better? by dustthebunniesin MTB

[–]VancouverIslguy 5 points6 points ago

The biggest mistake I see people make is they are too stiff on the bike. I've got friends who are weak physically who are insanely good technical riders so you're body strength doesn't factor into it as much as you might think. Obviously not knowing where you ride and how I can't give a lot of advice but being able to "detach" yourself from the bike and move will help greatly.

Practice practice practice, and when you're done that practice some more. Find somebody in your area who is better than you. Tag along and watch them ride. Pay attention to their body, a million internet guides aren't going to help as much as watching one skilled rider through a section.
