TROPHY CASE

Can someone explain what exactly this is finding? by TheMozin math

[–]UmberGryphon 0 points1 point ago

($3.65/gal)*[(xmiles/(44.7miles/gal - 28miles/gal)] = $7200

gives the right answer... I'm not sure how to explain when to use 1/(x-y) and when to use 1/y - 1/x, though.

ELI5: Karl Popper's 3 Worlds by endogirlin explainlikeimfive

[–]UmberGryphon 0 points1 point ago

Some people think that the world of physical stuff is all that there is--that if it isn't made out of stuff like blocks and plastic or muscles and brains, it isn't real. Some other people, like a French guy named René Descartes, thought that was wrong--that things like ideas and dreams and mathematical proofs are real, even if there isn't a physical spot that you could point to and say "that's where that idea is". People who agree with Descartes are called "dualists".

Karl Popper decided that not only is there a "world of stuff" and a "world of ideas", there's an entire third "world" created by people trying to get their ideas and dreams and mathematical proofs into other people's heads. So things like movies, schoolbooks and Reddit are part of this "world 3".

So how much of what makes my mind "mine" is from what I've seen of the "world of stuff", and how much is what I've learned from other people's minds through "world 3"?

Yes, the Tanuki at the end has a perfectly good excuse for having gigantic balls. Why the four creatures before that have gigantic breasts, I have no idea.

Hawkeye doesn't wear hearing aids any more, as getting recreated by Franklin Richards during Heroes Reborn repaired his eardrums. But watch out for Blue Ear!

This always bugs me. Universal Up. by Jebus812in scifi

[–]UmberGryphon 9 points10 points ago

Babylon 5 does suffer from "Universal Up", but the Starfury fighters actually obey Newtonian physics, as you can see in this clip. All of the fighters turn off their engines and still maintain velocity, and Sheridan even turns his to face the other direction while staying in motion.

What is the Western view of Quran's and hadiths' authenticity by GoodMilkin AskHistorians

[–]UmberGryphon 10 points11 points ago

There's a difference between the question "Did Mohammad say these things?" and the question "Are the things Mohammad said true?". The first can be studied by historians, the second cannot.

Note: should non-Muslims put "peace be unto him" or "pbuh" after Mohammad's name to be polite?

Tomorrow the mayor of Portland, OR will shave his head for children's cancer research. At time of post he has raised $215.00 of his $1,000,000 goal. Anybody able to help make that number a little less embarrassing? by happyamosfunin politics

[–]UmberGryphon -5 points-4 points ago

By the way, the mayor of Portland, OR didn't even run for re-election because he had sex with one of his interns, and hid this fact until he'd been elected mayor (even issuing denials in the face of point-blank questions from the local alternative weekly).

Well, a cabana is something that you often see at tropical or tropical-themed bars. I find it difficult to believe a tropical-themed bar would be in Corbi, Romania, but I found several people with the last name Corbi--maybe one of them opened a bar at some point?
