Mythbusters busted that one in episode 50.

Top shelf filtration

Myth: You can turn low-end vodka into top-shelf vodka with six filtrations of a domestic charcoal water filter (i.e. Brita filters)

They set up the experiment so that the vodka testers would each get 8 shots of vodka: 6 from the filtration stations (single filtered, twice filtered, etc...), 1 top-shelf vodka, and 1 unfiltered low-end shot. The tasters were asked to rank the shots.

The tasters were:

Anthony Dias Blue, vodka expert, executive director San Francisco World Spirits Competion Jamie, degree in Russian literature Kari, former undercover martini tester Kari: "I'm wondering if you might have contaminated your experiment by mixing on the mustache" Jamie: "either that or they're actually very sensitive and able to pick up on subtle variations in the chemistry in the vodka"

Kari was a terrible judge, giving a much higher score to the unfiltered cheap vodka than the top-shelf vodka:

Kari's worst: 3rd filtration Kari's second worst: top shelf Kari's third best: the cheap, unfiltered vodka Jamie was a better judge:

Jamie's second worst: the cheap, unfiltered vodka Jamie's second best: fifth filtration Jamie's best: top shelf Anthony showed off his tasting skills: his ranking corresponded exactly to the number of filtrations, with the top-shelf vodka picked as the best.

Anthony: "Passing a low-end vodka through a filter will make it better, but it won't make it a top shelf vodka"

They analyzed the vodka samples and found that there was no difference in chemical composition between the filtered vodka and the unfiltered vodka. You're better off buying the top-shelf stuff than wasting a bunch of water filters.

How One Flawed Study Spawned a Decade of Lies by ChadR44in science

[–]Treshnell 1 point2 points ago

The fact that a professor can get a shit paper published just because of his position at a prestigious university brings into doubt the entire process of peer-review. Science shouldn't work by appeal to authority.

I think that's pretty much it, exactly.

After Professor Spitzer's paper was rejected by the American Journal of Psychiatry , the Archives of Sexual Behavior agreed to carry it with open peer commentaries from 42 experts. Two-thirds of them were critical of it.

One member of the International Academy of Sex Research, which supports the journal, resigned in protest. Other academics have openly criticised the decision.

If you mean 'fake' as in you can't just look out your window and see this, then, sure.

But if you mean 'fake' as in created in photoshop, then not really. It's a collection of images that have been stacked together. The exposures necessary to capture the sky in that kind of detail are quite long. The sky images in this image were composed of 40 pictures with 8 second exposures. Then the images are 'stacked' to create the final image. Stacking basically 'adds' the images together to create a more accurate image.

This is a photographer using a technique that brings out something that exists, but we can't see.

Your cat chose to be fat? [...] You're either lying or one of your cats is eating the other's food.

...wouldn't that then be the cat choosing to be fat?

5+ years of cat ownership and the cat has 24/7 access to as much food as she could possibly want. She maintains a steady, healthy weight.

I refill her bowl with dry food when it's empty and a few times a week drop her an extra plate of wet food.

She'll often completely ignore the wet food (after licking up the gravy) for a little while before snacking on it throughout the day.

I guess I programmed her to know that food is available whenever she needs it, so she doesn't have to stuff herself at the slightest glimpse of some sort of edible tastiness.

Yeah, don't go by the movies. While some of them are generally considered pretty good from a film standpoint, Stephen King doesn't tend to like them because they change too much. Most people, for example, consider The Shining to be a great movie. Stephen King hated it. So look at the movies as more an inspiration from his novels.

In Wisconsin? $150 (up to $300) and you're good to go (first offense). $300-1000 for the second. And then $600-2000. That's where the base fines cap out, but you can get it increased by increasing your BAC. After the fourth or so they can arrest you and revoke your license, but that doesn't really seem to stop people very effectively.

We are honest about the nature of it when we bring people in to interview. We lay out exactly what the product is, what the applicants' duties would be, and how the pay structure works. We ask if they're interested in giving it a try, and if so, we bring them back for training. If not, then have a nice day.

I never lie. I enjoy my job, the people I work with, and the people I meet every day. I was unemployed for almost a year after being with a company two years as a "temp". Asked for a more permanent position (one with an opportunity for a raise and maybe a little vacation time?) and got the boot. Finally got hired here and they've given me a great opportunity to work and earn a living.

I'd like to give anyone I can the same opportunity.

Yeah, I can't speak for vector or other companies specifically as I've never worked for them, but our company we pay to complete appointments, sale or not (weekly bonus if sales are made). The appointments are set by the company.

We prefer people to get some practice before they run an office-set appointment, because office set appointments are expensive to set and new people take some time getting used to presenting the product. But it's not required and I've never seen anyone fired for not doing any practice appointments (I only did one when I started).

But every company is different, so ours could be run a bit differently than others.

I can't speak for other companies, but I don't see how I take advantage of people by providing them with a paying job. I've heard of companies that require an up front buy in and crap like that, but I don't do anything like that.

Most direct sales organizations hire like this (multilevel or not). That's why it comes off as scammy.

It's hard to interest people in direct sales, so recruitment techniques are often to be vague until you can get the potential employee in front of the product. You have to sell the product to the employee if you expect the employee to be able to sell it to a customer.

It comes off as scammy, but, at least in my company, we aren't out to steal identities or money from the people we're hiring.
