What hashing algorithm is good for uniqueness and speed? by davidk01in programming

[–]TheSummarizer 2 points3 points ago

These are one-way crypto hash functions and are the wrong tool. They are not designed to be random and fast (though they may be). Rather, they are designed to be irreversible: given a hash you have no statistical information about what the original source material was. You can use a screwdriver to open a bottle, but that doesn't mean a bottle opener isn't a better pick.

Well, certainly his vampire slaying has been undertold.

In many high schools honors or AP/IB courses go to 5.0. 4.33 means a straight-A student with lots of honors and AP classes.

Dear redditors, what's the most common error that foreigners do cooking your country dishes? by MrGestorein Cooking

[–]TheSummarizer 1 point2 points ago

This idiot has made so many atrocious gaffes in the name of "doing it right" that it's utterly jaw-dropping. He has to be a troll, it's the only explanation.

The latest was when he dismissed Bechamel sauce (and meat!!!) in lasagne, apparently unaware that it's a requirement in most traditional forms. Instead, he goes for ricotta.

Lasagne is traditionally associated with Bologna, Italy. There are various kinds, including traditional meat lasagne and so-called "pasta verde" (using spinach noodles and certain other differences) common in the outer Romagna region. But all of these lasagne are united in their common use primarily of Bechamel and secondarily Mozzarella. Notably absent: ricotta.

How did ricotta get into US lasagne? Much of the US italian cuisine comes from far southern Italians, who presented Italian cuisine, much of it northern, through a kind of goofy southern lens. It's kind of like if England ate Mexican food only as prepared by Canadians. This same lens that probably gave us atrocities like pepperoni and risotto with cream in it.

In truth I myself kinda like ricotta in US style lasagne. But heaven forbid it be replaced with cottage cheese.

What www.apple.com looked like 15 years ago. Who wants an eMate 300? by FabianHin apple

[–]TheSummarizer 35 points36 points ago

The emate was an awesome machine. Ran for 24 hours or so on batteries, included a drawing program, a word processor, etc. in addition to all the standard Newton software. And INDESTRUCTABLE. Everything was spring-loaded, and running off of flash, so you could drop it onto solid concrete and it'd be just fine.

Fun fact. Apple refused to sell the machine except to the K-12 market. Then they found out that a large number of the machines they were selling were not going to students but being routed through students to their parents who were often reporters in-the-field (say, Afghanistan) and needed a bulletproof laptop.

Fun fact 2. The emate was the first translucent machine Apple made.

People wonder why I ride my bike 10 miles to work every chance I get. by porkchop_d_clownin bicycling

[–]TheSummarizer 0 points1 point ago

Often. Rails-to-trails trails run along the original rights of way granted the rail line. But power distribution companies also commonly lease the rights of way of the same rail line from local governments to run power lines. Thus for example there are power lines along about half of the W&OD trail in Washington DC.

I was with him until I read this astounding tidbit of ignorance:

Though it is low to the ground, I have ridden this trike for several thousand miles without ever having a close call because someone couldn’t see me. After all, the trike and I together occupy about the same amount of space as a small refrigerator, and if you can’t see a refrigerator on the road in front of you…well, there might be some other issues going on.

Holy crap. This guy knows that little about inattentional blindness, and claims to be a bicycle safety instructor?
