Don't get me wrong, either. I'm not saying Kaufman wasn't influential in his own right.

Frankly, it's not even close to fair to compare either of them because they're on absolute opposite ends of the scale.

Hicks wanted to open your eyes with brutal realism, while Kaufman wanted to make you question if you were even real.

Either way, both completely influential in their own right.

I mean, Hicks was just gaining the kind of popularity that could've taken his message to where he wanted it when he died.

Kaufman achieved success and had a much larger audience with his absurdist shit from his Taxi fame and so on.

But has Kaufman inspired the kinds of names that Hicks has? Fuck no.

Every major comedian cites Bill Hicks. I can't think of anyone (other than Jim Carrey) who cites Kaufman.

I completely understand his point, and I've held mixed feelings about what Kaufman did and what Bob Zmuda continues to perpetuate today.

I remember seeing some documentary on Kaufman, "I'm from Hollywood," I think, and just sitting there as a kid going, "What is going on?"

Was entranced by it. Still am, to some degree.

That's not positive or negative, it's just wondrous. Like, "What the hell am I watching?" Was Kaufman good or bad? I don't know if I can really say, he was just different.

Whatever the case, he was interesting.

That said, I can understand why Joe Rogan specifically wouldn't care for Kaufman. He sits there and specifically cites Hicks as a hero.

I certainly respect Hicks more than Kaufman, and I think Rogan's right. Kaufman probably wasn't a genius, but he certainly did start conversations. Clearly still is.

My dad died last year. I drove to my house from my parent's (now my mom's) a day or so after I watched him pass away. It was dark and snowing.
