Teaching in Korea/Japan. A typical day? by TAureliusin TEFL

You get discounts on health insurance through the union I think, but there aren't any other benefits because basic services are socialized.

How many other countries have you worked in? Here in Brazil I could work public for longer hours and half my salary.

If by this you mean you are only working T/Th, then that's a pretty sweet deal. If you mean you are commuting to a different school on those days, then your employer is doing something illegal. Your E-2 allows you to work at only one address.

(But my school put the corporate office on my E-2 paperwork because they didn't know where they wanted me!!) ILLEGAL.

(But the school has a satellite branch and I spend half my time there and half time at the regular school!!) ILLEGAL.

(But I am in a hagwon under an EPIK contract and I work at the local elementary school for two hours of my day!!) ILLEGAL.

Kimmi can exact any penalty they see fit if you break their rules, including putting you in immigration jail until you can buy your way out of the country. Don't fuck with them. You need to get yourself sorted out.

Hi, I'm 33 years old and I left the US in 2008 to travel the world. I also co-mod /r/tefl. I've been very successful as a traveler and ESL teacher. If I can help you out, AMA. by Tarkaanin IWantOut

Your passport will make you native as far as legalities with immigration go (in Korea, for example, you need to be from one of the 7). Your complexion is your biggest hurdle to be honest. Asia is profoundly racist as far as hiring goes.

http://www.reddit.com/r/atheism/comments/ms00a/well_since_you_dont_believe_in_jesus_i_guess_you/

"Well since you don't believe in Jesus, I guess you don't want any presents this year!" - 10 Atheist reasons to give gifts at Christmas time (that don't involve God!)

I am probably one of the quietest, but most militant Atheists I know.

I'm quiet because unlike the god-botherers, I don't require constant validation from others about what I do and don't believe. Not only that, I wouldn't correct a lunatic who believes in government brain wave modification, and I wouldn't correct a child who believes in leprechauns.

Let them have their imaginary god and their zombie jesus, it doesn't affect me until it affects me. That's when I get militant.

So, for those of you whose parents say, "Since you don't believe that our all-knowing yet impotent god fathered a child with a virgin mother, slaughtered it, then returned it to life three days later only to have it ascend to heaven with no further explanation of the rest of its life, you don't get any presents this year," I give you these Ten reasons I give gifts at Christmas time:

  • Because I listen to my family. Sometimes a gift is a reflection of how well you know someone, how in-tune with their thoughts you are, how intently you listen to their wants and understand their needs. Give a gift that's reflective of them, because you love them.
  • Because my family listens to me. My family cares about me, and I want them to know that I see that and acknowledge it. They see to my needs all through the year, I shouldn't think of them at least once? They deserve something nice, as a reminder that I know they're listening.
  • Because kids like to have new stuff to play with. Whether it's a chemistry set or a comic book, from the intellectual to the consumerist, kids like to get new stuff and play with it. It's my responsibility, as an established adult, to indulge them.
  • Because I like to see kids playing with the stuff I get them. Yeah. It's selfish. But it's satisfying. I'm a softie. I'm not going to apologize for that. It validates me when I see someone using a gift I gave them.
  • Because it's good to indulge people from time to time. Rarely in our lives do we pause for pure hedonism. So why shouldn't I spoil my mom with a spa gift certificate? Why shouldn't I give my grandma a box of Brazilian chocolates? We can't do these things all the time, and it's good to gove others an excuse to indulge. We're human!
  • Because this is the time everyone has chosen for their global celebration. From Christmas to New Year's is the generally accepted party time: Christmas for the kids, New Year's for the adults. And celebrating and getting together with family is fun! It doesn't require Jesus' permission.
  • Because things are cheaper. Discounts. Everything is on a fire-sale discount this time of year. If I'm going to indulge my American consumerist spirit, why not do it when everything's 50% off?
  • Because I don't let anyone else tell me what to do. I don't celebrate Christmas because I'm not Christian. Does that mean I should not celebrate it because I'm Atheist? Part of being a nonbeliever is making your own choices. I choose to give gifts at Christmas time. And nobody is going to tell me not to.
  • Because I accept all members of my family just they way they are. I don't mind if they're Christian, Jewish, Gay, or Republican. This time of year, their ideas are all equally backward. But they're family, and that still counts for something in my book.
  • Because I'm not a humbug. Christmas isn't the time for me to tell anyone else how to live. This is the domain of the god-botherers. Do I think religion is a backward holdover from a long past time? Of course I do. But it's not really important enough to mention while I'm asking Uncle Chuck to pass the gravy boat.

Christmas is about giving, not receiving, so this holiday season, give and receive, and don't feel bad. Don't let anyone else make you feel bad. This is a time for celebration, and a time to enjoy our time with our families. It's a time to accept people, even when you don't accept their backward beliefs. Just be calm, don't take yourself too seriously, and thank your mother for being good to you, if applicable.

Oh, and Merry Christmas!

The difference is that piracy and plagiarism aren't the same thing.

I'm pretty sure this will be downvoted, but I've gotta say it. Why is reddit so against the editor in this video, yet so supportive of pirating/torrenting?

Do you really not know the difference between piracy and plagiarism? Don't misrepresent facts. Buy a dictionary.

Just to explain (Copypasta from a previous thread):

What happened was that two tablespoons of tomato paste was considered a serving of vegetables, and therefore, school pizza qualified. New regulations were introduced requiring pizza to have a quarter cup of tomato paste to qualify as a vegetable, making companies like ConAgra step up their health game a little.

ConAgra was pissed that this would cut into their profits, so last week, they lobbied congress to keep the old regulation that two tablespoons qualify as a vegetable. The old pizza is sufficient to qualify as a serving of vegetables, according to the US Congress. Congress kept the existing regulation, reclassifying pizza as a vegetable.

See, the reason this is offensive and that you should be outraged by it is because nutritionists and scientists guided public policy to improve health and nutrition in children. ConAgra came in and spent a bunch of money, and erased the work that science has done.

This is everything that's wrong with corporate government. We've thrown out logic and reason and science, and we've embraced greed and corporatism and cash money.

It's fucking KILLING children to be this obese, and yet congress doesn't care. They'd rather classify pizza as a vegetable to fit the guidelines in order to take all that ConAgra campaign money than do what's best, what's right for American children.

And they're being mocked...MOCKED for it. As well they should be. Pizza is NOT a fucking vegetable. It's NOT healthy. In some schools you can get pizza and french fries EVERY DAY for lunch, and the people who are working against that are being silenced by corporate money.

Do you know what the the Arab League is? It includes Egypt and Jordan, which Israel has peace deals with.

How's that working out? Look, obviously your hate for Jews is clouding your judgement, and I'm choosing to exit this conversation. I hope you heal and find peace.

[–]Tarkaan 0 points1 point ago

How diluted are you that you think the Arab League is responsible for the conflict? If you're going to stand up for Israelis, at least educate yourself so you can make some valid points.

Is that valid enough for you? They won't stop until the last of the Jews are dead. This is a fact. Israel tries to stop the fighting time and time again and Khammas breaks it every time. The only reason I can see for your continued defense of these obvious terrorists is that you are an anti-Semite who refuses to believe that Khammas, Hezbollah, and the PLO are squarely to blame for continued violence in the West Bank and Gaza.

Look at your media:

Gaza truce broken as Israeli raid kills six Hamas gunmen

Khammas uses the cease-fire to dig a tunnel they can use to kidnap Israeli soldiers. Israel raids the tunnel, therefore Israel broke the cease-fire. Bias that kills.

The rule of thumb is that they have 1 minute of attention span for every minute of age. Which means you need to completely change your activity about once every ten minutes.

Dr. Seuss books are good for teaching phonics, and they are not inaccessible to Gr.4s. Make sure you do a lot of pair games - quiz battleship comes to mind (they can shoot on-target, but to score a hit, they need to answer a question correctly or perform some task).

Role-playing prescribed conversations works in the beginning, and with two people, you have no downtime. If you're teaching task-based, you can role-play the restaurant a thousand different ways.

Is "Let me know whenever you are free" correct sentence? Any alternative way of conveying the same? by ridhs84in TEFL

[–]Tarkaan -1 points0 points ago

It it okay to say "He nearly fainted whenever he heard about his mother's death" when you mean "He nearly fainted when he heard about his mother's death"?

Edit: Of course it isn't. Not in any derivation of English. This is because "whenever" is an indefinite time clause and "when" is a specific time clause and I'm done with this thread.
