Freezing pre-cut vegetables? by AngelaMichellexin Cooking

[–]SuperiorRobot 0 points1 point ago

This appears to go against the general consensus, but I have never had a problem freezing chopped veggies. Most are correct in that freezing creates ice crystals that can puncture cell walls. However, freezing quickly will result in smaller ice crystals and mitigates the water loss.

Commercial food makers like Green Giant do this by running veggies though a conveyor freezer that is extremely cold. Frozen vegetables are really quite good and often better than what you can get fresh in the winter. You should be terrified of tyson frozen chicken, not of frozen veggies.

In my kitchen I put an aluminum sheet pan in the freezer, chop veggies, spread them out on the sheet pan and put it back in the freezer. This moves heat energy out of the veggies as quick as possible and gives the best results.

One final note, cooking turns the water in veggies to steam, which also burst cell walls. So if you are going to cook your frozen veggies, why do you care if they come out of the freezer a little less firm?

$20k, sports car, what would you pick, and why? by ocdadin cars

[–]SuperiorRobot 0 points1 point ago

Well the Z06 has a decent trunk, but would get rather uncomfortable on a road trip, and the Caymen won't hold enough stuff. An M3 is a great all around car.

Getting out to the track is easy! Just look up the schedules for all the local car clubs and see when they are having Driver Education events. I've never seen a club require you to be a member to sign up, since they actually make money if they fill up enrollment.

$20k, sports car, what would you pick, and why? by ocdadin cars

[–]SuperiorRobot 1 point2 points ago

Depends on your use case. Want the fastest car at the track? Get the ZO6. Want the most enjoyable car at the track? (Subjective, I know) Get a e46 M3 or a Caymen.

If you are just cruising public roads I would get a 128i convertible for about $20k or a soft top Miata for a lot less.

Assuming downtown DC to midtown Manhattan with both the train and the plane leaving at noon.

Plane person must catch a cab at 10:45, flight is from noon to 1:30, landing at JFK, 15 minutes to the curb and a 45 minute cab ride get you in at 2:30. Round trip cost if booked in advance: $150-200. Total time: 3h 45m. Usable time: about an hour while in the air.

Train person catches a cab at 11:30, train arrives at penn station at 3:20, at your destination by 3:45. Round trip cost if booked in advance: $100-200. Total time: 4h 15m. Usable time: Three glorious hours in the quiet car.

Flying by plane is faster, but there is far greater chance of traffic, weather, mechanical problems etc. impacting the travel time. Also, airports are the worst. The train is dependable and relatively hassle free.

Note: the Acela is fucking retarded. It only gets you there 40min faster but costs twice as much. I could have used it to get the train traveler there in a shorter time than the plane traveler, but I would prefer to assume it doesn't exist.

Where to find great mac and cheese in the city? by theredpenguinin washingtondc

[–]SuperiorRobot 2 points3 points ago

Baked mac and cheese is real mac and cheese. That runny shit is what kraft has been selling Americans forever. I agree that cheddar is the finest cheese for the job, but fancy cheese justifies ridiculous prices at restaurants and helps to sell units. It's just not something I would buy at a restaurant.

If you want really good mac and cheese, you are gonna have to make it your self. This is the best mac and cheese I have ever eaten. If you insist, he does have a stovetop recipe.

Need some help! Looking to put on summer tires on my Subaru Outback - Any insight on Hankook tires? by heavymin auto

[–]SuperiorRobot 0 points1 point ago

Where do you live? What are your driving conditions in summer and winter? There are, in my most humble opinion, only two situations where switching out summer and winter tires is necessary. One, you have a sporty car and wish to maximize summer performance while still maintaining usability in the winter. For this you want the best performing summer tire you can get and a sports car oriented winter tire. I use the Dunlop Direzza Z1 star spec, which has consistently been at or near the top of the Tirerack.com performance tire ranking. (Behind only the latest Potenza or ADVAN) (Tirerack surveys) It is always the editor choice for best value. You can't go wrong with Blizzaks for winter tires.

The other situation is for people who live in snowy climates and need serious snow tires in the winter. Then you can get an all season for the summer that will last a while.

Your outback isn't a terribly sporty car. Unless you are planning on testing the tires limits at a track day or autocross, I see no reason to invest in a dedicated summer tire/wheel setup.

OP, I would buy yourself a toy gun to use with your son. The manner in which you are using the rifle will send mixed messages to a boy that young.
