Emergency law considered in Quebec as thousands of students protest tuition; 122 arrests by pool92in worldnews

Let's compare theses figures with 1981, the world I were born in and knew.

  • 567$ tuitition fee in 1981 (1479.87 with inflation) - With the hike it's going to be 3946$

  • 24 336$ average wage in 1981 (63516.96 with inflation) - Today : 42190

That's on top of less job stability, less social benefits and the problematic of getting a good job for young people.

The average price of a house has gone way up too even with inflation accounted for.

We have Hydro Quebec, Lotto Quebec and SAQ that are worth billions. We could sell them and pay a good part of the debt.

The thing is... the baby boomers lived in a socialised economy and amassed lots of money. The younger people are paying a lot more for everything as far as % of their income goes. Education is one thing the baby boomers should be paying for, the next generation is going to end up paying for their socialised retirement and healthcare.

Cutting university access to the poorer and middle class students isn't the way to reduce the debt. A univiersity student will pay 300 000 in taxes more then an average person, so it kinda pays for itself on top of creating wealth, sustainability and stability to the economy.

Actually I live in Quebec and I'm paying arround 50%. Happy to do it, we have a great system. People bitch about the corruption and the gov (with reason), but we have a great standard of living down here.

I'm glad a whole new generation has waken up !

She made too many mistakes and statements to be part of the solution... And students leaders did try to come to an agreement that was clearly on the gov's side, it got refused by the councils.

Injecting a large ammount of money in a small local economy... I'd expect growth too.

I wonder if this is doable on a larger scale. Very interesting experiment.

Fillibuster... Read about it. It's been used in the first half of his presidency prolly as much as the last 100 years put together.

I don't speak French, but can someone explain to me the major differences between Hollande and Sarkozy and what you think the election will mean for the European economy? by Hanging_outin france

[–]Summum 3 points4 points ago

Hollande is a leftist (socialist) and for europe, Sarkozy is on the center-right.

Most of the leadership positions are currently occupied by people who lean right, especially in the financial world.

It would be a clash of cultures.

Having a liquor licence comes with rules to follow. It's different in every state/jurisdiction but normally you have to follow rules established to promote safe drinking. In some states bartenders have to be certified 'Safe Serve' and are legally responsible for their clients after they leave the bar.

Eg You can't have drinking games in a licensed establishment.

Where I live happy hours are tolerated but illegal, but changing your price during the night ala beat the clock is getting you suspended/revoked.
