You briefly stated how you get paid, but is that why you do it? Are you in the business of selling what you find? What was your biggest payday, and for what?

The exodus to work under Shawn Ryan definately needs mention because Terriers was god damned amazing.

Also, let's just forget all about Marti Noxon please. I blame her for rapist Spike. Fun Marti Noxon tip: her sister-in-law is Jenji Kohan, creator of Weeds. Isabelle Hoades is played by daughter Noxon.

This will get buried this late, but I know some good ones. I don't want to give to many details.

Basically, a 23 year old that worked for this company had a heart attack and died playing sports. Wife and a 3-year-old kid at home. Tragic.

His wife is in hysterics and can't stop talking about their vehicle, which is a company vehicle. She wonders if she has to give it back.

A VP of the company just buys the truck outright for her. Then, that VP decides he's going to put $5,000 into a trust for the kid's education. Then his boss puts in $10,000, and passes the hat around the office so other people can pitch.

Then he matches what they all put in.

True story.

I think we agree with each other real hard, but you're stopping where I would keep going. If she still has the damage, charge the motherfucker with assault. If that malicious tattle tale pops up again, bring down some brimstone.

Of course she has to get out of the situation first, that goes without saying. But exiting the situation without trying to facilitate some consequences on the people that fuck you over? Where is the pride? Where is the self-esteem? The OP said she still has feelings with this abuser and didn't want him to deal with the knowledge of her exploits. Once she was safe from him she should embrace his complicity.

Doing nothing about this is more reverence, respect and self-control that an abusive asshole deserves, and to let him and his accomplices off the hook is unjust.

I'm just saying this person hurt her intentionally and she should have no qualms about telling that person how she really feels. She has it coming and she's gaining nothing by being noble. Honesty here could be cathartic.

People really look down on those who don't just bottle everything up and carry stress in the jaw. Why should that other girl go through life thinking she did something good or with no bad consequences? Fuck her, I'm looking out for OP who got fucked over.

Don't bottle this up on reddit! Throw this emotion into that person's face where it belongs.

I think vengeance and conflict are looked down upon too much. Free the beast, kimb00.

Gangs of New York/Inglorious Basterds and Creative License in Historical Fiction by wallychampin TrueFilm

I think the key with GoNY is that it reads like an oral legend, its historical accuracy and details washed out in pursuit of a bigger truth. In that sense, its dedication to its own universe is startling, one I find is underrated even years after.

I think one of the most pleasant experiences I've found with historical inaccuracy was the Rutger Hauer starring Fatherland. It's an adaptation of a book series where D-Day fails, America goes and mops up Japan and returns to isolationism, the Nazis conquer Europe and set their sights on Russia, and Britain girds the English Channel and hunkers down against inevitable invasion.

As a result, the Holocaust never comes to light. A reporter teams up with a concientous SS officer and brings it to light right in time for the first visit to Nazi Europe by US President Kennedy.

It's not a great film, but the departure from history that remains steeped in the the "canny" creates a great feeling.

This is a roundabout way of saying that GoNY never bothered me for one second with the inaccuracies, and I think would have been hindered by rigour.

Neil,

Love your stuff. I've never read The Game, but Everyone Loves You When You're Dead is a bible for an arts journalist starting a career.

I just wonder if besides the general codes of conduct and confidence espoused in your other work (like The Game) if you had tips on interviewing. You somehow coax the most interesting, revealing parts of a person out of them with shocking regularity. What's the secret?

[–]StoicRomance 1 point2 points ago

Have questions, but really respond to what that person is saying. Treat it like a first date and have some lines of honest inquiry. You never know where it'll lead. Get a call recorder and use Skype to do phone interviews so you have your hands free to make notes on new questions that crop up. In person? Have some beers and loosen up. Talk about some nonsense at the start to loosen up.

Being super tense and sticking to a script is the worst thing you can do. Relax and they'll relax. The answers will be better and your story will be better.

This is, of course, the answer if you have no sincere interest in the subject. If you are sincerely interested, it will come naturally.
