TROPHY CASE

Hifi Cables. I'm a bit of a non-believer but this guys arguments make sense i think. He writes for me so i should declare an interest. by Stupinderin audiophile

[–]Starguard 1 point2 points ago

So much pseudoscience, so little ABX testing. These are the most satisfying types of posts to downvote.

Hopefully some of the information above demonstrates very clearly why a well designed cable of good quality is far superior to the cheaply made and poorly designed freebee cables that may have come with your kit.

Yes, it demonstrates very clearly, with such wordiness and esotericism that you are full of shit.

Here's a decent ABX listening session that compared:

  • Reference Taralabs SCR generation 2 (€ 560 for 1 meter).
  • DIY ACR (4.5 € per meter)
  • DIY + RG179 taken gold plated copper / teflon (4.5 € per meter)
  • DIY Ogobert
  • DIY Ogobert (unshielded)
  • Standard cable to 2.3 €, with an optional extension of five meters (between 4.5 and 8 €)
  • Audioquest Diamondback (137 € for 1 meter).

Guess what? No one could tell the damned difference. If you hate audiophile myths as much as I do, Prog Rock Man on head-fi has one of the most epic threads ever. Check it out. And downvote this shit.

VICE: Slab City, USA by LECHEDEMIPALOin Documentaries

[–]Starguard 0 points1 point ago

From Wikipedia:

Documentary films constitute a broad category of nonfictional motion pictures intended to document some aspect of reality, primarily for the purposes of instruction or maintaining a historical record.

I don't think Vice's productions fit this definition, or anything remotely close to it. Their videos are perfectly entertaining, but they're not documentaries. IMO r/documentaries shouldn't give credence to this sort of sensationalism -- there are plenty of other subreddits out there.

Really, how different is its exploitation of situations majorly different than other outlets?

What sort of standards does Vice abide by? I don't want to sound like I have a stick up my ass, but their goal isn't to present this subculture with integrity, dignity or accuracy. Their goal is to entertain; to present a personal narrative of one of their own getting fucked up with weirdos. Again, something I would have no problem watching in r/videos. But it's out of place here.

This is so insanely impressive. I can't stop watching your mix. Is Korg DS-10 designed to work with multiple devices? (And thanks for offering FLAC! Though I do have to ask... how are you exporting your songs? Does the program let you export wav files?)

Good job using this guy's question to tout all the shit you have. An insane wall of text and you don't even get to the answer until the edit.

Let me just go ahead and break this down for you:

  • Total words relevant to thread topic: 325
  • Total words spent talking about random bullshit you own: 538
  • Percentage failed: 86%

You're recommending to someone on r/audiophile to buy a new receiver with a built-in phono pre-amp? My mind is full of fuck

A month too late, the Reddit album. I hope you enjoy. by jordanTRCin Music

This. This is amazing. I just got the chance to listen to the track my story was based on... sounds like the glory days of dubstep, when anything with that dark, mysterious vibe and deep bass was appended the label.

I can't wait to listen to the rest of this.

Does anyone here use Quadraphonic? by RR--in vintageaudio

[–]Starguard 2 points3 points ago

It's a Sansui QR-6500. It's a 55lb beast.

I was really surprised by how well a quadraphonic sound system handles digital input.

The inputs on the QR-6500 are divided between 4ch sources and 2ch sources. The 4ch sources have 2 sets of RCA stereo jacks for "front" and "rear." From my soundcard (this thing) I have two 3.5mm-to-RCA jacks coming out of the front and surround channels. It's very simple and stupid cheap. I bought the soundcard years ago and only used it for its optical out (to connect to my DAC); the quad receiver has a few cosmetic blemishes and I traded a $60 reel to reel deck for it. It's worth $150-200 depending on condition. If you've got four of the same speakers, you're good to go (just scour craigslist for Pioneer 3-ways -- they're $20-40 for a pair and are generally damn good for the price).

I don't really care for the discreet 4ch albums I've listened to. It's a cool effect, but stuff like Wish You Were Here just sounds wrong. Too much separation. But the matricing effect (done on my computer, not by the receiver) is seriously amazing, and I doubt I'll ever go back to a stereo setup. I'm always surprised by the ease a quad setup lets you pick out parts in the music. If you've got the room and the patience to find what you need on craigslist, definitely try it. Happy to answer any questions you might have.

[–]Starguard 2 points3 points ago

I use a quad Sansui receiver and four 3-way Pioneer speakers as my main rig. I don't have a turntable setup for quad, but any modern soundcard that can output 5.1 can output quad. I use a Creative Xi-Fi and play 5.1 recordings with a WMP plugin that mixes the center channel between L/R and the sub into all channels. The receiver's matricing works okay for records. But the plugin does wonders to 2 channel sources. Incredible separation.

r/dubstep, am I wrong in thinking that Caspa and Rusko's FabricLive.37 mix has been the most important album for the genre? If not Caspa and Rusko, then who? by Starguardin dubstep

[–]Starguard[S] 6 points7 points ago*

Of course, I know Skream has become classic dubstep's leviathan, but I think for a lot of us, FabricLive.37, from Rusko's "Cockney Thug" to Coki's "SpongeBob", was what got us into dubstep. The sound of the mix -- with its dark samples, heavy bass and mild treble -- came to shape a big part of London's sound. But these are my anecdotal observations. I guess I just wanted to ask -- what's your perception of the mix? What got you into dubstep? For those that have been with the genre for a bit more time, what album(s) do you think forever changed the genre?

Wiki track listing, discogs

YouTube (I think it's interesting that this video above labels the mix as "the album/mix that brought dubstep to the mainstream" -- I tend to agree, but I don't know exactly how to quantify that statement. What exactly did the album do for dubstep?)

No. God no. These minamlist book covers/movie posters/super hereos/etc. are trodden to the point of triteness, and these aren't particularly clever or well done. Your font selection and kerning on the Soylent Green cover screams, "I just torrented Photoshop! Look what I can do!"
