TROPHY CASE

Teller of Penn & Teller Breaks Silence To Sue Over Magic Trick - Hollywood Reporter by diggroin entertainment

[–]Sparky_Z 4 points5 points ago

You didn't read the article carefully enough. This has nothing to do with "how the trick is done" (except insofar as that's what motivated Teller to sue). The copyright is on the actual "pantomime", not the underlying mechanism by which it is achieved.

Think of it this way. If someone were to make and sell a computer-generated animation of someone performing the trick, they could also be sued for infringement.

I see what you're saying (and I wasn't aware that this particular site was so well stress-tested). However if the site goes down and nobody saved a copy, then who puts up a mirror? I, as the submitter, could be sure to save a copy in case it's needed, but then I have to monitor the submission.

Also, if the site goes down and a mirror isn't available instantly, or is buried in the comments, there are karma whores who will use it as an excuse to rehost and resubmit. (This happened to me last time I submitted a link, and that was to dilbert.com. Who would have predicted that that site couldn't handle the traffic? You just never know.) By including a mirror from the start, these issues never come up.

Also, as noted in the thread I linked to above, some people use the mirrors to avoid content filters at work.

I've only just started submitting links myself, but I've been hanging around here for years. Whenever this issue has been debated, the consensus has always been that the best practice is to link to the artist's page in the headline and include a mirror in the comments. That way, the artist is supported by default, but anybody who needs a mirror can get one without any trouble. If that's now frowned upon, then the rule in the sidebar should definitely be clarified.

Sorry. What's the rule, then? I thought linking directly to the comic's page and including a mirror in the comments (in case the traffic drives the site offline) was considered the right thing to do.

For example, see the top comment here.

Algorithm of the Week: Merge Sort by ragingtunain programming

[–]Sparky_Z 1 point2 points ago*

It's not that you'd want to ever code up your own merge sort for use in a project

Except that, unlike quicksort, merge sort is stable, which is necessary for some applications. If you need a stable sorting algorithm that works efficiently on wide range of data sets, then merge sort may actually be the best choice. What would you use instead?

Edit: By "stable", I mean that elements which "tie" stay in the same order they were input. The linked article uses the word in a more general sense, which is frankly a stupid and needlessly confusing thing to do when discussing sorting algorithms.

He has a younger sister, Myrcella and an even younger brother, Tommen.

They haven't gotten very much prominent screen-time thusfar, but they've been around. Perhaps you remember Tyrion telling them he was going to the Wall to "piss off the edge of world", making them giggle in (I think) the 2nd episode.

What happened to the 3rd perl6 compiler? by zvrbain perl

[–]Sparky_Z 8 points9 points ago*

Perl has always been compiled. Not in the sense that, say, C or C++ is compiled, but rather it is compiled into bytecode that can be read and executed by the interpreter.

However, keep in mind that they're talking about Perl 6, which is a separate (but related) language that is still being developed.
