Anderson Cooper quizzes supporter of pastor who proposes concentration camps for gay people. Her responses are a microcosm of the conservative christian attitude. by madam1in news

[–]SicTim 5 points6 points ago

I agree with what you're saying, but, very unfortunately, too many people -- including far too many "conservative" "Christians" -- incorporate base bigotry into their personal philosophies.

Anderson Cooper made precisely the right point -- the Bible condemns heterosexual adultery far, far more often than it even mentions homosexuality. Hell, it's one of the 10 commandments.

Are There Any Older Bipolars Here? by bipoloiterin bipolar

[–]SicTim 1 point2 points ago

I'm 50.

My story? Um... a lot has happened in 50 years. As I like to say, I've lived at least five lives already.

I've been a professional musician and comedian, and I've worked in a chemical plant slinging sacks of raw asbestos. I've been a homeless heroin addict and I've dined at the Cosmos Club in Washington DC with the first black member they ever admitted. I've been rich, I've been poor, and everything in between.

I'm primarily manic, diagnosed bipolar I, and Seroquel has been a miracle drug for me. I've also found DBT helpful.

To sum it up: Perhaps there is a diety (probably not), but if there is, it is not what all the whacko religions say it is. Perhaps it's a huge intergalactic space-dog who took a dump and poof .... universe.

And there's one of the roots of the problem -- how does one define a God or gods? If one defines it as something possible, then it is. If one defines it as something impossible, then it is.

Either way, we must separate our emotional beliefs from our rational knowledge -- and not pretend one is the other in any meaningful way.

Replace this movie with, y'know, the actual Frankenstein, which is a time-tested favorite.

[–]SicTim -1 points0 points ago

So you absolutely, positively know there is no God or gods? Would you continue to hold that belief regardless of any evidence to the contrary?

Basic epistemology states that for a belief to become knowledge, it must also be true. Neither absolute atheists nor absolute theists hold this knowledge, given the evidence we have at this time.

Both must remain open to interpreting further information as it becomes available.

I just hope that whole thing doesn't incidentally turn people off to Larkin.

The OP fucked up This Be The Verse's line breaks, and Larkin was a formalist whose work doesn't stand up to that kind of futzing too well. Also, The Whitsun Weddings is one of my all-time favorite poems.

For a truly authentic sound, catgut is supposed to be good. But -- and this is important -- don't use actual cat intestines.

You want the fibers from sheep or goat intestines. And if you are in a death metal band, you can hang the goat's head on your amp for Satan and stuff.

I used a Boss DS-1 Distortion exclusively for most of the '80s and '90s.

These days, I use a Digitech RP-90, which I managed to score cheap. I purchased it mainly for its DS-1 emulation, but find myself using it for a lot more these days.

I also use Line 6 products for amp and FX modeling in my home studio setup.

And those are the three brands it's hard to go wrong with, right there -- Boss, Digitech and Line 6.

It's easy to be biased towards products one uses, and dismissive of products one doesn't. Basically, any effect you like the sound of is worth owning.

Does this "theory" make any sense, or is it all gobbledygook? by whatthenigin askscience

[–]SicTim 3 points4 points ago

String Theory is interesting and may one day lead to new physical theories - but it is not currently a theory of physics.

This is something that has been bugging me for a while -- shouldn't we be calling them "string hypotheses"?

People are confused enough about what a "theory" means in the hard sciences.
