TROPHY CASE

The tall hug dilemma by yer0cin tall

[–]Shadowrose 2 points3 points ago

"rest my big arms awkwardly on their back in a way that doesn't suffocate the head that they're smushing into my chest or stomach."

Bearhugs. Most people just start tapping me when and/or flailing when they can't breathe. Glasses, also. I accidentally punish those with less than perfect eyesight. Regardless, I get a few hugs a day. People like being buried in a giant mass of flesh it seems.

It was a joke. Sorry. :-P

If you want real input, make every combat have a good reason to bother fighting those things. Always work from "Why are you fighting them?" instead of "What will be fun to fight?" or something else. Sure, you can use both together, but always always always keep the "Why" in mind. Otherwise, I mean, I can't add much that hasn't already been added.

"fight these 4 monsters and get gold."

I sometimes use 3 monsters. Or 5. Occasionally, I'll really mix it up and they get silver instead!

[–]Shadowrose 0 points1 point ago*

Oh yeah. Al Rosa and the community as a whole was deeply, deeply shaken by what happened there. I think the Villa closed for quite a long time afterwards. And, I mean, I think they cranked up security, but they also didn't in some ways. There's only so much you can do with sterilizing the atmosphere of a venue. Most people tend to acknowledge that what happened was sort of an insane, one-off thing.

Edit: One huge thing we do now, that I'm not sure changed because of that or because of other shootings that have also occurred over the last decade.. we do pretty thorough pat downs and bag searchs. Guns, knives, weapons. All are major no-nos. The last bar we worked at had a male and a female bouncer stationed at the front door explicitly for patdowns.

Legitimizing airships as a form of travel: world building help request. by 935Pennin worldbuilding

Honestly, I would think that if a civilization's mass transit began in the air significantly, they would probably build down instead of up. It makes more sense to keep the skies clear so they can maneuver more easily. And if they're on massive plateaus, there's more than enough space to build what are essentially inverted skyscrapers.

"How much fire damage to you take for jumping into the Sun?" and other weird to-DND translations. by erichermitin DnD

[–]Shadowrose 6 points7 points ago

I want to point out that the Corona of the Sun is at 5,000,000 C. So you'd be taking 100,000d6 per round before you even make it to the surface. Also, I'm not sure damage dealt by heat and radiation can be modeled linearly. I imagine it's more exponential/geometric.

Dude, I remember the night he was shot. First it was news on the Interwebs, on discussion boards and shit, and then all over the news in the AM.

I was a bouncer at a bar in Columbus when it happened.

Pretty fucking surreal.

Yep.

Might want to try reposting this to /r/Ohio and /r/Columbus. Those subreddits are going to be more concerned with this than /r/Video, and some of us don't bother subscribing to /r/OSU since, well, I'm not directly involved in OSU in any way.

I tend to get masochistic when I'm in Shadow. I'll drop Shadow Word: Death on everything. Constantly. Preferably in ways that won't kill anything. That's a decent mana boost. Also, Glyphs! Spirit Tap and SW:Death's glyphs are both super useful for mana gain.

Shining MUD - a huge project in the works for at least 5 years. by SimonLBin gamedev

MUDs have something magical in them

I think it's the intimacy. I spent a few years playing MUDs, and the communities are so tiny compared to anything we have now. I actually learned most of what I know about programming from the owner of the one I spent the most time on. And there's something to be said about being able to talk to a game's primary developers while they're working.

TIL how to get results from any cable company. Details inside by GepettoZHogin howto

[–]Shadowrose -5 points-4 points ago

Yep. Pretty much. I understand it's hard for many people to grasp, but telling the Tech Support agent that you want a discount? Or that you're going to terminate your service? Pretty much entirely useless. If you're calling me because your shit doesn't work, I'll try and fix it. If you tell me you want to cancel your account, I'll cheerfully transfer your ass to retention.

TIL how to get results from any cable company. Details inside by GepettoZHogin howto

[–]Shadowrose -7 points-6 points ago

Immediately after doing this, call back your cable company. When the first person to take your call answers, tell them that you have an open claim with PSC concerning your account and would like to talk to the supervisor to resolve the issue.

I work for FiOS Tech Support. Please note: I would put my phone on mute and laugh at you if you told me this. But that's mostly because we don't give two shits about people complaining about their service. We aren't retention. We aren't billing. So, make sure the first person you talk to is someone that can actually give a fuck.

So, I've been using the G9x for a bit, and so far it feels exactly as I was hoping. The only issue is that the switch to go between modes is on the bottom of the mouse. But I can scroll just the same with or without the clicky. And it scrolls on the click.

Bastion and Frozen Synapse are both considered Indie games. Both are very visually attractive. Bastion doubles down and has one of the best soundtracks I've heard in years.

And mostly they are those providing most fun in terms of gameplay.

Not sure what you're saying here. Either way, there's a difference between polished graphics (which don't require a huge amount of work, they just require attention) and leaving graphics in that you were testing with. Or having your primary programmer throwing textures together at the last minute. A lot of games just don't feel like the developers bothered thinking about the graphics, and even in the face of superb gameplay, that will ruin a game for me.

Also, honestly? I don't have the nostalgia hardon for old games like a lot of redditors do. A lot of older games just look terrible. Even AAA studio games. Yeah, they're still fun, and I'll play some of them, but it does significantly detract from the experience for me.

Edit: Another thing to throw in. Zigfrak. It's made by a handful of guys, and it's a very attractive game. It also has enjoyable gameplay. Also of note, Sins is one of my all time favorite games, so I'm getting the demo of AI War anyway. :-P

How did you find out about Pathfinder? by xpuppykickerxin Pathfinder_RPG

I found out about it when 4th was still fresh, and I was still in 3.5, annoyed with the 4e core box set I purchased. I actually still have my Beta Playtest Core Rulebook sitting on my shelf beside the 4e books. As far as how? Probably /r/rpg.

I'm switching to the G9x. Haven't got it yet, so we'll see how it goes. Hoping it's precise enough for how I use it. For the longest time I used Logitech trackmen, so I'm hoping the scroll wheel feels similar to those when in the 'precise' mode.

If you prefer graphics over gameplay

Oh. I didn't realize I said that. I thought you said

Graphics don't matter that much

Did I read that wrong? I mean, I thought I just clarified that "Graphics don't matter that much to some people". I'm not sure how that implies that graphics are preferred over gameplay. I don't really see why there needs to be a dichotomy between them. I mean, why can't we have both?

Regardless of that miscommunication, there are games where the poor graphics are a significant impediment for me. But, in general, I value both gameplay and graphics. I don't see why I should have to choose. I mean, am I allowed to be concerned with the soundtrack? Or is that choosing sound over gameplay? Is that OK for your elitism?
