Why Windows 8 Does The Right Thing The Wrong Way by blackhole12in programming

[–]Seraph451 0 points1 point ago

I think your comment shows more about the current way an OS is built to handle a program than anything to come. The idea behind the article is that W8 will be the start of another take on the OS, one with a certain amount of flexibility in how it interacts with programs operating on it.

Ideally you'd see the OS programmed with all the permutations of screen and interface, and then have a program that provides something for the OS to interpret based on the device it's running on. I'm using "interpretation" here in a more abstract sense, not in the physical component sense.

For example, think about a processor that was hooked into an advanced neural network that could evaluate the UI as projected onto the screen. That might produce some interesting results, though we would need to advance our understanding of neural networks a bit.

[–]Seraph451 3 points4 points ago

Which is what the article is pointing out. Eventually the device and the physical interface fade into the background of what commands the usage of a piece of software, merely by the stated fact that the options for a wall screen alone would outnumber (and include) any range of devices that are portable.

It's about designing the OS to be flexible in dealing with programs that are equally flexible in how they instruct the OS to display the UI and allow for interaction. It's a difficult idea, and W8 will mostly likely be a train wreck, but it will be a highly educational one for whatever comes afterwards.

Depends on what you're using it for. Some cases you want to round, some cases you'll want to truncate (in general, not talking about Pi specifically).

I read the Barsoom series when I was in high school and loved it. I understand the movie can't be true to the book(s) because it's a different medium with different restrictions, I'm just hoping they make a good story out of it.

So you're saying I paid $80 for 2 discs that are completely and utterly useless without the internet? by quietstormx1in gaming

[–]Seraph451 1 point2 points ago

The gaming community made their position extremely clear - they are fine with their "review" sites being used as advertising venues with the interests of the publishers placed above those of the gamer.

This is one of the truest statements I've ever seen on this subreddit, and yet I can't understand how it happens. People complain about publishers/developers and then refuse to act on that outrage.

I think we need a new nonprofit called "Invisible Gamers" to go out and expose the publishers in a half hour video with a cool soundtrack (SONY 2012)

Don’t Resent the Rich; Fix the Tax Code by besttrousersin Economics

Don’t Resent the Rich; Fix the Tax Code by besttrousersin Economics

[–]Seraph451 0 points1 point ago

The president has no real power by himself to change the tax code. At best he has the power to sign into law or veto any tax code that congress puts before him.

That's one of the problems with democracy, is that someone's electability is more dependent on them being charismatic than anything to do with their ideas.

Don’t Resent the Rich; Fix the Tax Code by besttrousersin Economics

[–]Seraph451 1 point2 points ago

Doesn't the idea of a progressive tax system take into account the idea that as an individual generates more income they are taking advantage of a greater portion of the infrastructure that was funded by the government?

For example, if you own a company that creates a product - as business picks up you are bringing in more raw material, hiring more workers, and pumping out more of that product, all of which puts more stress on transportation infrastructure. Taxes support the creation and maintenance of the infrastructure, so if you're using more of the infrastructure than your neighbor then you owe more taxes to support it.

Income isn't a perfect way to establish that relationship, but it's a bit nebulous how much each person uses the infrastructure to begin with. This also applies to communications, energy, waste processing, etc. infrastructure.

Oh, and your username made me smile. =D

I have to interject here. Your chart on "Children's Chances of Getting Ahead or Falling Behind, by Parents' Family Income" shows pretty strong evidence against your whole argument. Look at what it actually says: Those in the top 20% of income levels have a 39% chance to stay there, and a 52% chance to stay within the top 80% of income levels. On the other side, those in the bottom 20% have a 42% of staying in the bottom 20%, and a 65% chance of staying in the bottom 40% of income levels.

If you look at each quintile, you'll see that generally the quintile that the person is born into is the most likely for them to land in, especially if they are at the top or bottom. By this chart you could argue that there's plenty of social mobility between the bottom 3 quintiles (the 0%-60% range of incomes), and impacted mobility moving from below 60% to above 60%, and an even bigger gap moving up above the 80% mark from below.

Further, if you look across the table, the chances are about even that no matter where you're born you'll end up in the 20%-80% income range (all of them are near enough to 20% chance, except at the top quintile). The only real outlier is the top and bottom 20% income levels. If you're 4th or top quintile the chance of ending up below 20% drops dramatically, and the chance of being in the bottom or 2nd quintile and ending up in the top quintile.

Your second image shows federal spending vs. overall achievement. First, the No Child Left Behind was fairly useless, as we can see by the resulting achievement of spending per pupil. However, if your family is rich and you go to a private school federal money is in no way relevant to your education. That chart is completely useless for your point.

Who is Toph's baby's daddy? by pompous-pigin TheLastAirbender

I wasn't commenting on that so much as I was trying to extrapolate that Lin's father had no (or lower) status.

I'm predicting that there will be an episode in LOK about Lin's father and the circumstances of her birth.

I'm also predicting that Toph never got married, and that the reveal on Lin's father will be a big deal by that point.

I find it more interesting that she has the Bei Fong name when it was her mother who was part of the family. Her father may have not been of any kind of real lineage.

Alternatively, it's possible that Toph never got married and had a kid anyway. Seems like something she would do, actually. Might be an interesting episode where we find out some background on Lin...

One year of family photos are suddenly encrypted after getting a new computer by letusmarchforwardin techsupport

[–]Seraph451 0 points1 point ago

I know this is solved, but I'm going to post this here anyway.

When you save documents under your Username file (such as c:\Users\Seraph451\My Pictures) those files are encrypted when any other user tries to see them without necessary permissions. An administrator can fix this problem with permissions, as was the case here.

How do you prevent this from happening in the first place? I create a new file structure in my main drive that is not user specific for files. I'll have a c:\downloads, and then subfolders for browser downloads, torrents, my dropbox, etc. Then I'll have a c:\documents with subfolders for school papers, research, creative documents, and so on.

Files that are saved in the c drive are accessible by any user, regardless of permission level, which means if you reinstall or upgrade your OS you won't have to worry about encryption. In the case of settings, those I keep user specific (even though there's only me using my battlestation) mostly because they are a pain to reconfigure to save elsewhere.
