The most remarkable fursuit head I have ever seen by evilsibein furry

[–]SchodingersCat 5 points6 points ago

"follow me eyes". it's an artist technique first seen in paintings I believe. you intentionally put the eyes in a recess but draw them in such a way (usually larger than normal) to make up for the difference. the way the optics and geometry work out, the recess and sizing makes it seem like the eye is always facing the viewer, regardless of their position.

Suiting at Work Part 2: The New Suit! by SamuraiSmurfettein furry

ahh gotchya. I was having trouble placing the green backgrounds. I've hardly ever been to staples XD

Regardless of the reason, it was awesome. And because of your reason, I think that makes it more awesome!!

This is awesome! Love seeing suiters out doing this sort of stuff!

What store is that? Office Max?

That's really cool that it went so well that you got fan art :D

Found a site with good deals on assorted resistor, capacitor, diode, transistor, voltage reg, IC, and socket packs. Most are under $5. by Soonermandanin electronics

[–]SchodingersCat 1 point2 points ago

One suggestion I haven't seen is Jameco Electronics. They've also got some assortment packs. Just got a 50 pack of switches for $10. Rocker switches, momentaries, even DIP switches. I wont need to buy switches for a long time now.

sounds about right. And let's hope he does grow up with a free and open internet. Otherwise, all of us are going to have a very rough and dangerous time as he gets those ten years. :\

and you're welcome!

For this particular video yes. There are others, with other themes too.

Theme aside, it's still fun to watch.

yep, that'll definitely do it. Gotta love audacity!

look forward to seeing them when it's all done.

Suggestions for prying apart pallet planks? by SchodingersCatin DIY

[–]SchodingersCat[S] 0 points1 point ago

heh. The only problem I have with that method is that the chocks on my pallets are actually "caged". That top part with like 8 boards on it, is on both sides. :\ but the later techniques are certainly useful for solving my nail problem. It's been so long since I hammered a nail in reverse I forgot about it being an option, durrh.

in regards to the second link...now I know!

thank you!

[–]SchodingersCat[S] 0 points1 point ago

ahh, good point. and those tend to actually be cheaper anyways XD

yeah, i already found one in the chocks that when I tried to pull it out the head of it popped off. Looks like I'll need to eat my spinach and go at with with the pliers to get it out.

thank you!

Rayven+Recon Red Tac Light+Dark+Cats=Excellent fun times! Plus Questions.... by Carpenterdonin Nerf

[–]SchodingersCat 0 points1 point ago*

I highly recommend using guides for this. I have not personally done anything with the electrical nerf mods, but I have worked with the batteries that are often used. Because of the power that RC batteries put out (current and voltage) and how much more energy they can store up than normal batteries makes them rather dangerous.

be careful not to let leads touch, even on a discharged battery. some of the batteries can be considered explosive, this is mostly targeted at the Lithium-Polymer type (Li-Po), but I'm not entirely sure if people are using that kind of RC battery. Regardless, Lithium batteries should be monitored when charged. if they start to swell for any reason, remove the power source and contain it some how, a coffee can, pan anything. It's not a common occurrence, but should you be unfortunate enough, they go off like incendiary grenades.

Also, when "over volting" the motors you have a chance of ruining them. The motors in the Rayven already have the stock battery current reduced by resistors. Adding more voltage will make them spin faster as desired, but if they go to fast they will burn themselves out. Some mods also ask you to take out the resistors completely and never replace them with anything. That's also risky for similar reasons. The resistors, while limiting energy a bit, are there to protect the motors. if they're gone and something shorts, a switch goes bad, etc. your protection system is gone, and sad motor is sad :\

that's not supposed to scare you, but inform you. I'd love to do an electrical nerf mod, I just don't have the money for the blaster or the parts.

Basically what it amounts to, is do your homework and be safe. The best performance stuff I've heard of is to get better motors that are meant to take the higher volts and current. you can also get and use the more powerful RC batteries, just know that "new rules" apply for safety with some of them. Also check your math. one of the hardest parts about work like this is just that there are a lot of numbers. Make sure you know these terms: resistance, voltage, amperes, Amp-hours, and Ohms Law. Knowing that will allow you to understand the math behind everything and make sure what you buy and use wont blow anything up, or be too weak.

In regards to the batteries. The flash batteries might help, it depends on the over all voltage you can get out of them, and if that total is higher than the stock battery total voltage. They should be marked in volts, just see how many it takes to get the voltage you want. They may not last as long as you'd like them to though. That would depend on their Amp-hours, which should also be marked.

As alluded to above, the higher voltage is what you want. You'll have to be careful of the current that creates however, too high of a current will destroy your motors, or wires, or something else. Capacity for batteries is measured in Amp-hours. The way you read that is to take your load's current (read as "how many amps do my motors pull") and divide the amp-hour value by that number. That will give you how many hours (more likely to be minutes) your battery will last. Also note that most batteries mark this figure in milliAmp-hours (mAh), so remember to convert the units.

I apologize for the small book I just presented to you, I apologize even more if you knew that stuff already. But I hope that at least some of it helps you out.

one last thing. towerhobbies.com is a great place to go for RC related stuff, they have more batteries than most of us can imagine. That link should take you right to a search for all their batteries. you can slim it down to what you're looking for.

happy modding!. and don't piss off the cats /too/ much. They are vengeful critters when we least expect it! XD

To Mr MacGregor, my 7th grade teacher who said I'd never amount to anything. Well... by Farisr9kin self

[–]SchodingersCat 2 points3 points ago

yeah. I was the gifted student that got straight A's without trying all the way through most of high school too.

Then I got to college. Because of not having to try previously, I had no studying skills or time management abilities. I've slowly fixed a lot of that over the past three years since. The catch is that the classes have been getting harder faster than I am getting better. As a result my GPA is slowly slipping away 0.1 points at a time.

That D.V.M. degree is starting to get really far away...

[–]SchodingersCat 0 points1 point ago

haha, yeah, I've had similar experiences even with just normal photography. "HOW DID THE STRAP GET THERE?!?!"

if you have editing software that can edit the wave form of the video's audio, maybe try seeing if you can highlight the peaks that are the "strap bumps" and normalize them, or even better, reduce their gain to like -90. It'll temporarily muffle the audio, but that's better than hearing the strap rape the microphone XD

There are filters you might also run the peaks through, but those get fickle real fast, so I prefer to just do it manually like the above. also, make sure you don't "delete" the peaks, because that will shorten the audio length, and your audio will fall out of sync with the video.

[–]SchodingersCat[S] 1 point2 points ago

yes I did. Which is again why I think they were probably using them at least partially for anonymity reasons.

Most of their videos do not use the costumes, but the most recent ones at the moment do, and some of it is rather genuinely funny and amusing to watch.

Just another "something different" to see people doing things with fursuits (or animal costumes or mascots or whatever you wanna call them).

Hey! I'm a teacher and I want to do a unit in my classroom on circuits and electronics, any tips? by mollylolly88in electronics

[–]SchodingersCat 4 points5 points ago

I would say start with basic definitions of things like resistance, voltage, and current. From there you can teach them Ohm's Law ( I = V/R) which is very basic math as long as the variables stay simple. If they aren't ready for the math, just skip ohms law. Either way, the idea of having them measure currents and voltages and taking notes on their findings is a great idea that I saw other people suggest.

You can then also talk about the "water analogies" for electrical flow, which helps a lot of new students to the concept grasp the idea.

After all of that, you can move on to a basic "battery, wires, light, resistor" lab. I recommend using tiny incandescent bulbs like what you'd find in an old flashlight. the reason being is that the students can then use different batteries (or simply more or less of them), use different resistors, more lights etc. all of which will change how bright the light(s) is (this is much harder to do and explain with LEDs).

After they get a firm grasp on all of that you can start discussing topics like parallel circuits and series circuits if you have time. Also you can then start looking into the broader uses like solar power, as you said you wanted to do in reply to someone else.

hope that helps.

well I already liked these guys, having just bought some stuff from them a month ago. They had already earned me as a repeat customer (as soon as the paycheck allows it), but this is sealing the deal.

yeah I saw that too. I couldn't help but laugh. The scary part that bothers me is that Hot Topic (at least around me) seems to have most of its patronage in the < 14 years old category now.

I keep seeing stuff like that all over the place. i've had two thoughts about it: A-oh god why.... B-then again we all did similar stuff as a kid too...now it's just easier to find.

I know some of the guys that did this as Case Western. They did it again when I visited and they put a whole squad of cameras out in the filed during a recruiting mission. It gets lots of amazing footage. Also, if down right, tends to look like a FPS game.

My only real complaint is we needed wind screens over the mics, running around makes a lot of windy noise O.o

But to answer your question more directly, yes, do share, that stuff is awesome!

I found these guys in the "suggested videos" today. Some decent public pranking and running around in costumes that are basically fursuits. Probably using them for anonymity more than for running around as animals, but still.

Figured I'd share. and apparently if you live in columbus ohio you might get to see it live.

DAE prefer these over their electric counterpart? by weskokigenin biology

[–]SchodingersCat 2 points3 points ago

I was unaware electric versions existed. This is all I've ever used, and yes, I suppose I do prefer them. They're incredibly easy to control and fine tune on the fly.

Though I do admit I prefer the versions that have a "release valve". The valve makes it very easy to get any excess fluid out to correct those times when you just goofed up and you somehow have more fluid than there is space on the piston to push it all back out.
