Surreal Gaming: Which games exist that explore the surreal and how do they compare? by eltommonatorin truegaming

[–]Sati1984 38 points39 points ago

Silent Hill 2 is a good example.

The whole town is a surreal entity in a way. I can't say anymore without spoilers. If you are interested in such games, it's best for you to play it through.

It has surreal puzzles, surreal enemies and surreal game mechanic elements. It even has some surreal meta-jokes. It's just a masterpiece.

The experience of playing it... is surreal. At some places, you feel genuine fear, at other times, you are puzzled, at other times, you are mindfucked. It's not easy to describe, so you really must play it.

An action-adventure game set in the Firefly universe. Or a Mass Effect-style RPG.

What are those games that never got that sequel that they deserved, or maybe those games that got that sequel but just did terribly with them? by Beastly97in truegaming

It had some interesting weapon designs at least. The design of the first aid boxes for example was really cool, much better as in UT2004. But yeah, U2 has pretty much failed to live up to expectations. Especially the ending. That was a real letdown.

What are some games that most people call 'classic', that you simply consider so outdated it's unplayable? by WtfWhereAreMyClothesin truegaming

I found it awful already in 2002.

It had two unforgivable sins.

  1. Using the Q3 engine. All precision in physics is lost in that point. The game was jerky, I could never tell if a shot will hit or miss, it was all around terrible (I felt the same in Q3 too. The physics of that engine is just awful with all the jerkiness and hit precision is all-around terrible in it...).

  2. Lightsabers. Oh, my, the lightsabers. Only thing worse than the Q3 engine in FPS is the Q3 engine in TPS. Somehow, it managed to be jerky even from that perspective. Oh, and the movement of the main character, the jumps, the turns - all were awkward. I felt uneasy. In UT, I could tell where my character's pinky finger was - from first person perspective! In Q3, I felt I'm on a ship that's sailing on rough sea. Where was I? Oh, lightsabers.

On top of the Q3 engine, there was the option to finally do something with your saber - and by god, the mechanics were atrocious. I could never tell if I hit a stormtrooper or not, I could never tell how much damage I do. The characters were sliding all over the place, whenever I moved in saber range, I was immediately open to cheap hits, etc. It was just so horribly done, I can't find words.

It's unplayable in 2012, but it was already unplayable 10 years ago...

Unreal Tournament GOTY.

It had sequels, yes. UT2003 and 2004 were however unforgivable for me in the regard that they copied elements from other popular FPSs of the era and never expanded on what UT99 had already got right... got best.

UT2004 was a good game, yes, but it lost the unique feel of the first one. The precision of the physics was lost. The models were awful. The music... oh, my... UT99 had the best soundtrack of any game ever, but 2004 had a washed down, generic soundtrack. You could not tell the levels apart. The weapons, the colorful weapons we all loved in the original, were changed to boring, factory grey rifles - shadows of their former selves. And the whole game felt wrong - it played nothing like an UT game. At all. It was a good multi-FPS, but it was not UT.

Worst offender is UT3, which looks like just another generic, boring A Space Marine Is You console FPS. It has good ideas, yes (all were already in the original, except for a few new gamemodes and the inclusion of vehicles). It can even be a good game. But UT99 has never got the sequel it deserved.

Never.
