My own unreasonably strong demand from physicalism. by philsaxin philosophy

[–]Roanourke 1 point2 points ago*

Yeah, I at least intuitively embrace qualia and I can't really help it.

"There seems to be no grounding for thinking that "what you would call blue" exists in any real sense. Your eyes (and mine) absorb some photons, some rods/cones fire off some signals down dome nerves, and a cascade of synaptic events passes through areas of the brain. There is no "blue" or "red" anything at any point."

What about the so-called "arbitrariness worry"? Why is my experience of color what it is instead of some alternative that allows for equal discrimination (spectral-inversion is the easy example). What accounts for the fact that I experience blue the way I do as opposed to some other way that isn't even a color I see at all? All that matters for survival is discrimination. I certainly doubt you'd posit that those colors really exist in the external world.

And preemptively, before you get too defensive, keep in mind I'm basically asking you to convince me otherwise, I'm not trying to prove you wrong.

Excellent, excellent defense of your comment. You've really convinced me. I think I'll have a t-shirt company print about a hundred or so plain t-shirts with "white", "black", or "asian", etc. printed on them. Then when I go walking tomorrow I'll hand them out (y'know, blacks get "black", "whites" get white. Just so it's out there and everyone's really thinking about it. We really don't want to keep our trivial external differences such as skin-color from being in the forefront.)

I definitely agree that avoiding mentioning race isn't helpful or necessary, but to do so needlessly is also completely of no use.

And the fact that you made the observation and felt the need to mention it means that you are racist (not necessarily that you dislike certain races). It shows that race is very much on your mind and you immediately and needlessly take note of peoples races in random contexts.

Yeah let's bring race into this.

The whole big brother/dad doing the obligatory threat to the daughter's date is soooo incredibly cliche.

Unusual instruments in Metal -- a problem? by MonsieurBullshltin Metal

[–]Roanourke 1 point2 points ago

To each his own.

But in my opinion that usage of banjo is a novelty at best. Take that same part and have a guitar play it and it would sound better.

Banjo is one of the least versatile of all instruments. If you put it in anything it becomes bluegrass- or folk-fusion.

Not a problem. Lower-range saxophones belong in metal more than any other "non-metal" instruments, but it doesn't really get done.

Though I'd add that banjo doesn't belong in metal.

I'm a metal fan looking to get into some jazz, anyone have some stuff I might like? I searched the FAQ's but I couldn't really find what I'm looking for... by ImNotElricin Jazz

I've heard some of it, but I'll look into it more. What would you say is the most intense track on that album?

True, it's less straightforward a connection than with the others. Although the intro to Foster Brothers has a very metal breakdown-like quality.

Alloy has some really heavy/bouncy orchestrated parts with the bass and tuba.

I'd recommend No Neighborhood Rough Enough too if it was on youtube. The tenor solo on that track is very extreme/intense that excites me in the same way that metal does.

I'm also a metal fan. Here are some of the most metal pieces of jazz I know of:

71 by Inzinzac (kinda Dillingery)

Never, Ever, Ever by Cuong Vu (basically Meshuggah jazz) Also Accelerated Thoughts off the same album (which you can download for free)

The Bronx by David Binney (bizzare, but very heavy)

Pure Hatred by Speak (more Meshuggah)

Foster Brothers by Steve Lehman (has some Meshuggah-like chugs)

You may also like:

Alloy by Steve Lehman Octet

Also my band has considerable metal influence, notably in tracks Weffalumps and Hoozles, Dan's Tune, and Fudj.

Ha yeah, it definitely has that same rhythmic motif, though I've never heard this before.

None in particular. I guess it's more influenced by the more ambient ones without a beat. If you listen to the keyboard part in particular you'll hear some of that old tv logo type sound. Thanks for listening.

I wondered the same thing. I feel like people tend to way over do nose-redness in cartoons. I don't like it. I think it's kinda gross.

Otherwise it's a nice piece.
