I was walking up the stairwell and caught a random guy behind me taking an "up-skirt" photo of me. What is the creepiest thing you've witnessed, and did you call the person out on their behavior? by ThirssstyMoosein AskReddit

[–]Repard 0 points1 point ago

Was on vacation with my family when I was a teenager. We had stopped in Santa Fe for the day and were walking around looking at the Native American vendors' stuff. As we waited to cross the street, a seedy-looking, possibly homeless man walked up to us and then circled my parents, my sister, and me, doing a poor job of looking nonchalant.

Naturally we all notice and my dad and I immediately become fully alert. He followed us for a few blocks while my dad and I kept looking back at him and then lost interest. Never really understood what he was trying to do.

For real. I carry a concealed knife on my ankle; if someone had done this to my wife I would have slit his throat from behind and asked questions later.

Haha, my name is Dan Draper; I graduated INDD in the summer of 2010. And that should have said "previously Liu," as he took another job. Saw this when it was first posted months ago and made a similar comment, then saw that somebody posted this, recognized the wall behind it (oh, that terrible, terrible wall that I stared at far too long), and decided to say it again.

Exactly, it doesn't look professionally-done at all. But he's trying to pass it off as professionally-done. I'm saying that it would have sold the joke that this was actually from Valve a little better had he used one of the other programs.

That's cool if you use it everyday; a lot of people don't use them or don't understand the difference so the explanation was for anyone's benefit.

Except Photoshop is a bitmap editor, which means it treats objects as collections of dots or pixels on a grid. This creates problems when you try to zoom past the resolution of your file or align something more precisely than the pixel grid. Also, Photoshop's layout tools (what few there are) are geared for aligning pixels on a screen, not objects in a print-ready document. Whereas InDesign and Illustrator are vector-based, which means the computer understands the lines which make up each shape or text character as a mathematical equation. This means that you can enlarge your text or shapes practically infinitely and still maintain a crisp line with no loss of data. Additionally, these programs (InDesign especially), have incredibly precise alignment features to ensure everything lines up down to hundredths of a millimeter on a printed page.

Photoshop is the wrong tool for this sort of job and if you're using it for page layout in any sort of professional manner you're producing work that makes you look very unprofessional. Besides the spelling error, had he used InDesign or Illustrator it may have given it that extra edge of realism that would really sell the joke.

While this is probably an example of something that's gotten out of hand, Coca Cola does have these properties. Put a penny in a bowl of Coke (overnight, I think) and the Coke will dissolve it.

That's why I said sexes, not genders. There's a difference.

Photoshop is a bitmap image editor. For something like this, use InDesign, or Illustrator in a pinch. Doing page layout in Photoshop is like driving your riding lawn mower to the mall... You can do it, but it makes you look really freaking stupid.

What were the days after 9/11 like? by argonautsin AskReddit

[–]Repard 0 points1 point ago

This is going to be very hard to explain to someone who wasn't alive/doesn't remember before 9/11. There was an airy, carefree nature to being an American at the time; we were strong economically after the 90s, there were no wars going on, it was fun and proud. Unfortunately, some of this was due to complacency and naivety as to factions elsewhere in the world which hated our way of life. Now we're all suspicious of each other, we fear what we don't understand about each other. Before that day, we (mostly) celebrated our differences as that was the beauty of living in America.

I was thirteen when 9/11 happened. I haven't thought about this in a long time. Answering your question has made me sad. I wish we could go back to how it was before.

I'll probably be downvoted for this, but doesn't this guy have a point, even if he pushes it a little too far? 200 years ago, marrying another race or a person of the same gender would have been considered just as completely ludicrous. However, the progress of society always tends toward liberalism (thankfully so), and here we are. It's no longer taboo for a man to say, "I want to marry a man," because all society's previously-held reasons for why that would be ridiculous have been slowly eroded away, and now it largely makes sense. If a person today were to argue for marrying their dog, we'd scoff and give logical reasons why that couldn't happen, but what's really stopping us from slowly changing our minds on those reasons, just as we did for inter-racial and gay marriage?

I guess what I meant was that they seem to be giving all updates right now for free to everyone, but I'd call 2.0 and 3.0, etc. releases new versions, not updates, and was wondering if they'd honor that promise to alpha users in those cases.

[–]Repard 0 points1 point ago

Hmph, if I remember correctly it was "free upgrades for life," but at the rate they push out updates and releases without any indication of ever charging anyone for them, I doubt that'll amount to much of a perk in the end. Maybe it means we get Minecraft 2.0, 3.0, etc. free?

How I feel every second on reddit as a conservative by indoorinternetvoicein funny

The point is that taxes are too low, and the millionaires know this. Look at the greatest period of economic expansion in U.S. history: between WWII and Reagan's "trickle down" economics. During that time, the wealthy paid 65%, 75%, maybe even 90% of their income to taxes, and the economy BOOMED and made this country the most prosperous in the world. It's the right thing to do. Oh, you made a million dollars this year and don't want to pay eight hundred thousand of that in taxes?!? YOU STILL HAVE TWO HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS. There are millions starving in this once-proud country every day because they can't find work that pays enough to simply survive. If you think that the millionaire should keep the majority of his yearly fortune while millions starve, then you're sorely misguided.

"Failing government policies"?!? Not sure what you're referring to but it's probably some aspect of the government that Republicans think is "too big..." Republicans want small government except when it comes to defense spending, freedom of expression, freedom to love who you want, freedom to worship what you want, etc. In those instances they want government to be as large as possible and force the people to follow the same views they do. Why don't we cut defense spending in half?!? We'd still have the most powerful military on the planet by far and could invest in education and infrastructure that's been sorely neglected. This would also create many thousands of jobs. But NOBODY on the Right would ever suggest something like that.

How insulting that you think I don't have my shit together. I work very hard for my money and it's still not enough, and I do pay taxes. As a freelancer I actually basically pay taxes twice. If people who weren't struggling would pay their fair share as they did in the past, then the economy would be better and many fewer people would be struggling, which in turn would make the economy even stronger.
