Went out with my father in a small sailboat on long island sound. It was early spring and still quite cold and windy, but we went out anyway, and once the wind caught us we could barely keep the boat upright, let alone steer or make adjustments. Just immediate crisis mode after launching.

After a minute of this and far from the shore, the wind finally swung the tiny boat around and seemed to lift the entire thing out of the water and dump it over upsidedown, (which we later discovered snapped the mast in half.) My father and I clung to handholds provided by the mounts on the stern and tried not to freeze to death while the coast guard swung over and picked us up.

When we got back to shore we laughed for a long time about the whole thing, and my father bought the guys who rescued us a crate of scotch.

Aftermath - Fixed the boat, it now sits quietly at Sunapee NH, although it took a few years before we were willing to actually sail it again.
