I like Cramer purely for the entertainment part of it. I find myself getting angry at things Kudlow says politically, so now I just avoid it.

I gotta say of all the CNBCers, Kudlow is by far my least favourite.

The VIX itself is an index. There are leveraged (and double leveraged if you are a risk taker) ETFs you can use.

If I have a number of long positions, I am betting that they are going to go up. I'm very selective about my long positions, and don't generally take one unless I'm very confident in it. But, I can have five of the best companies out there, and a sudden overall market turn downwards can waylay even the most solid companies (9/11, war, Greek default, sudden large bank closure).

To hedge against a sudden market turn down, you can buy a VIX related ETF, which will go up in general relation to how much the market goes down.

In general, the VIX goes down as the market goes up. VIX goes up as the market goes down. Violent swings, especially downwards, causes the VIX to spike. So, if a major world event causes the market to fall, my VIX investment will make up portion of my losses.

I tend to use VIX hedges in two cases:

  1. Things look calm now, but have some potential to go south quickly, such as the Greek/Italy/Spain situation in Europe.

  2. I've almost fully invested (meaning most of my money is in play) in long positions, and the VIX is unusually low.

Hope this helps!

EDIT: Make sure you do your own research to understand how VIX ETFs work - they are a bit different than your 'normal' ETF, and do have higher fees associated with them.

Thoughts on Gold/silver? by lippindotsin investing

I can't say I agree with your statement that its over inflated, and hit its peak. I see this as a healthy pullback, and a buying opportunity, which I intend to take advantage of.

If you look specifically at gold miners (not the actual metals, but the companies that do the mining), the often swoon in spring, and pick up in mid-July. I'm currently waiting to take a position in Yamana in the first week of July to take advantage of this.

The feeling of knowing that a) you aren't alone and b) its perfectly normal and natural was a great feeling when I first discovered I was an introvert. Welcome to the club.

Just don't be too loud ;)

Eating alone in crowded places feels uncomfortable; I feel as if I am being judged as having no friends and I do not want the pity. by DandyTheLionin introvert

Very much the opposite. I absolutely LOVE eating alone, bringing a book, my tablet or Blackberry with me, and just reading. I've also found that many servers, when they see you alone, are more open to chatting a bit if you feel like it, otherwise they leave you alone.

One of the favourite things I used to do, and recently started doing again, is going to the movies alone. I don't have to worry about meeting people on time, small talk before the movie, and the awkward "movies over, what do we do now" post chat that happens sometimes.

Once I discovered that, unless I go out of my way to make myself visible, no one really pays any attention to me.

Some of the best descriptive storytelling I've read. I highly recommend it.
