Moderators: moderator log update by bsimpsonin modnews

Yep, this sort of thing.

month/quarter/year/all would probably be better in the long-term.

A person posted about his/her concern about ViolentAcrez as a new MOD for r/writing, gets banned. VA nowhere to be seen and people on /r/writing are pissed. by rakistain SubredditDrama

[–]Raerth 29 points30 points ago

I was a lurker back when the subreddit system was created. There was basically a huge rush when the feature came out, and a few redditors who were awake/first to see the announcement rushed to create as many subreddits with generic names as possible.

IlluminatedWax was one of the people who bagged a large number of generic-name subreddits. There's a few others, not going to name names but it's not hard to find out.

Is there any plan to have a summary page for the modlog, as there's a couple of scripts around to do this and would be nice to have it built-in.

Yeah, so here's my How To Reddit post from nearly 2 years ago which should give a lot of pro-tips.

Hopefully people who scroll this far down the page will find it useful :)

I didn't care for Gosling in the movie. He was too bland and emotionless

That was a trait of the character, and part of the whole meaning of the film.

Okay, so what SHOULD Dany have done in A Dance with Dragons? (spoilers, DwD) by Khivain asoiaf

[–]Raerth 1 point2 points ago

I think people are misunderstanding GRRM's reason for having her in Meereen. She was never intended (by Martin) to arrive there and immediately be a wise and powerful ruler. She's a naive teenager for fuck's sake.

People develop by learning from their mistakes, and Dany made a lot of mistakes there. She now has a lot of experience in what not to do.

The way it's been written is a lot more believable than Deny arriving in King's Landing a "virgin" Queen who never puts a foot wrong. Instead she'll be battle-scarred and ruthless having seen first-hand the results of youthful idealism.

To anyone who's wondering, a Knighthood doesn't actually result in these things.

we're implementing a new commenting system that supposedly draws a lot on Reddit.

How do you feel about this, seeing as you said it's "purposely unintuitive to scare away non-geeks".

A new analogy for subreddits and their ownership by joanofarfin TheoryOfReddit

[–]Raerth 1 point2 points ago

And the same thing goes for r/funny, r/music, r/philosophy et al.: the absence of active moderation is as much an editorial decision as its presence.

As one of many active mods in /r/Music, wut?

I'm not sure how you associate "white, geek, male" with "sexism, racism".

The main change in reddit has come from the massive influx of users from meme-related websites. In the last 2/3 years the average age and maturity of users has dropped considerably, and so has their expectation of what this website is.

Reddit has used to be the little-known lovechild of slashdot and hacker news, it's now the incestuous offspring of 4chan and memebase.

Sure, the structure of reddit allows subreddits to spring up covering any subject, and freedom of speech also allows freedom of uncomfortable speech, but for every /r/Circlejerk or /r/BlackFathers there is a /r/Anthropology or /r/BritishTV.

It's a shame to only concentrate on the salacious side.

Addictive does not necessarily mean you become chemically dependant. Anything an individual finds enjoyable (drink/drugs/chocolate/sex/shopping) can become addictive.

Why is moderator ownership of subreddits a good thing? by ixidin TheoryOfReddit

[–]Raerth 9 points10 points ago

You keep using systems of government as an analogy for moderation processes. I don't think this is suitable.

Unlike Nations, no one is born into a subreddit. No one is forced to be a part of a subreddit. No one is unwillingly beholden to a subreddit's rules.

Reddit is a private website, with sections that anyone can create. Other people are then free to choose whether they want to read or participate in these user-created subreddits.

You think reddit would be better served by having users able to vote people in or out. I strongly disagree for the following reason; /r/Atheism has 450,000 members vs /r/Christianity 's 22,000. It would be possible under your system for trolls to invade the smaller subreddit and vote-out the moderator, installing a puppet regime of their own. Subreddits like /r/circlejerk and /r/shitredditsays would have a field day with this ability.

It's much better, in my view, to have the current system. Anyone can create a community, and anyone is free to leave or join whatever community they want.
