What is the most computer illiterate thing you've witnessed? by Peppe22in AskReddit

[–]ProjectAzar 0 points1 point ago

I had a tiny older woman come up to my desk once, and she wheeled in her desktop and set it before me.

She then says, "Son, I've done something terrible. You see I was on the computer and all of these naughty pictures starting popping up. Well I didn't want my grandkids to think grandma was into something naughty, so I started clicking and well..." She stopped talking for a moment and looked nervous.

"You see, I deleted the Internet." She looked incredibly guilty like she believed she had deleted the entire Internet.

I looked at her and said, "Don't worry ma'am, we can save the Internet."

The Tesla argument continues; Oatmeal responds to Forbes. by freshasapoppyin geek

[–]ProjectAzar 4 points5 points ago

I think the fact is that the original comic was taken out of context by the Forbes writer and then nitpicked to no end. The Forbes writer argues on numerous occasions about arguing in context, and yet ignores the basic point that the Oatmeal comic was not presented as fact but as an entertaining overview of a topic.

While yes, The Oatmeal may have gotten it wrong on a few points, which mind you he points out in the rebuttal, I don't think that you should ever take a comic as fact, which is what this Forbes article attempted.

He was defending himself in this case, from being attacked by someone who has an equal number of fallacies in his argument that the Oatmeal does in his counterargument.

To disregard the problems of the Forbes article in your attack of Oatmeal response is to disregard the context of the response and to miss the fact that the Forbes article is just as blatantly cowardly as your complaint about the rebuttal.

Yea but that's Florida. You can shoot a man dead for looking at you funny with a concealed gun, unless you are a woman in that state.

No one even heard of the first twelve and sales were bad of the whole series. No one wanted to invest in XIV.

Valve: No New Product Announcements at E3...means no Half-life 3 by jerryconnellyin Games

That would single-handedly be the worst idea Valve ever had. Which is saying something, as its typically not that bad of an idea.

I bet that party was awesome, until the last five minutes when the host light the place on fire and ran around naked with a feral cat attached to his hip.

International Criminal Court says it cannot investigate alleged Israeli crimes in Gaza because Palestine is not a state. by ozyman_451in worldnews

[–]ProjectAzar 8 points9 points ago

Just to be clear...the ICC was already a mockery of itself. It has not functional power, that isn't conceded to it by the actors involved. It has no enforcement mechanism and truly it has little real jurisdiction.

Its a nice Idea that has no real strength, used to put away criminals that are pretty much already determined guilty by the time they are there because they were captured by either another state or given up by a state's own people.

People in college/graduates, If you could go back in time would you still go to university? by HalfBlackKidin AskReddit

I would, but I would I would choose something completely other than programming. I literally hate every minute of this major, but because I'm only a semester away from completing it there is no reason not to finish.

Eh most of these guys recently are old game developers who haven't gotten the chance to do anything creative in a long time. Shaffer's studio is hard to fund, Al Lowe's probably been in retirement for 15 years. The Wasteland guys haven't been up to much. And these are all classic game makers. Really I see no problem with them wanting to do these projects again. They were the pioneers of the art and they are damn good at it too.

Crowdsourcing will likely be the main way to get games that kick ass made any more. I for one am a huge fan of it.

Why you shouldn't boycott Game. (And celebrate its near death experience.) by SamGreenEggsHamin gaming

[–]ProjectAzar 0 points1 point ago

While I get your reasoning, your argument is valid against any and all corporations. Your argument is against capitalism and not just GAME. You are suggesting we give money to a bad corporation simply because it is made of people. I know you have good intentions with what you are suggesting, but it is bad for the consumers, and it is bad for those employees you want to support and here's why. The more we support companies like GAME that exploit consumers and exploit their workers, the more we say as a society that those actions are okay. While there is a temporary human cost in the form of those employees jobs, if we don't take a stand, then future employees will have even shakier jobs and worse protections of their jobs.

It is a fundamental problem of our system and one that continued patronage of bad companies is not going to assist.

Your daily reminder of why you should stop giving Bioware money by TwistedComplexin gaming

[–]ProjectAzar 52 points53 points ago

If the DLC is fully available on disc, then, in my opinion, you should have access to it. If its not fully available, then opening access to it does nothing, as its incomplete.

And this isn't cheating, at least not in the traditional multiplayer sense. You aren't doing anything to give yourself an unfair advantage in a competitive field and so it shouldn't be a punished as if it is (with bans and such).

If this is an anti-piracy thing (and really, how much of this crap isn't anymore), then banning if origin detects a mod doesn't make sense. Wouldn't Origin only be present if the person bought the game legitimately? Would a pirate not immediately strip the origin crap from the game?

Banning for modded single player makes literally zero sense to me.

In the past two decades, the money that states spend on prisons has risen at six times the rate of spending on higher education. California spends $8,667 per student per year. It spends about $50,000 per inmate. by ngamauin news

[–]ProjectAzar 0 points1 point ago

This was the point I was going to make. While it may be pretty egregious that California and many other states spend like that, they in essence, have to, to even meet the bare minimum of living standards for the prison population. There are simply too many prisoners, which likely comes from a number of problems, one being the lack of rehabilitation programs, another being over enforcement of minor crimes, another being unnecessarily long sentences, another being mandatory sentences, another being unresponsive laws...the list goes on.

This isn't an easy situation to fix, and such hyperbolic numbers as this headline gives aren't really going to help solve the problem. EDIT: Sorry the jab at the headline is at the author of the piece and not you ngamau.

What is the most offensive thing a customer has ever said to you? by NatelieOnein AskReddit

[–]ProjectAzar 2 points3 points ago

I work in IT. Let me share with you the stories of my people.

So I was on the second day of employment at a particularly large, blue, big box technology store, and I'm working for their repair side. I get a call from a pissed off customer who wants to know where his f-ing son's f-ing iPod is, and if we f-ers have finished f-ing with it. Well we handle warranty replacements, but these things usually take some time to go full circle (store->warranty shop -> store) and it hadn't been that long.

So I go to the back, and try to find some information. Turns out his iPod was apparently in some kind of shipping limbo. Utterly out of my control. I advise this guy of such and he begins on a tirade about me, my employer, my family, blah blah blah. And then he wraps the whole thing up with, "I'm coming up there, and if I don't f-ing get an iPod before I leave, I'm going to f-ing strangle you on the spot." Well, I'm shaken, as this is only day 2, and I tell my manager, and she gets to work on the issue and says I should have just hung up the phone at that point.

Well I don't think too much about it, as the adrenaline of the shitty call wears off. And then in walks this man, who I swear must have eaten like half of a horse a day for twenty years. His arms were literally twice the size of my head and he was probably 6-5, in a sleeveless shirt and overalls. I see him before he sees me and I duck into the back. And then I hear him just lighting up the front desk about where the f his son's iPod is.

I turn to my manager, and tell her, "If its alright with you, I'm going to be hiding back here for a while, praying for my life."
