"Fifty Shades of Grey" readers face long wait at Colorado libraries by kidbomin Denver

[–]PostalPenguin 0 points1 point ago

I sat next to a 50ish year old woman in a pink sweat suit on a flight recently who was reading 50 Shades of Gray. Its kind of awkward knowing someone next to you is reading literary porn.

If libraries were given infinite copies of eBooks, no one would ever buy books again. Limiting the number of eBooks keeps libraries operating as they did with traditional books.

Might want to check to see if you can find a LHBS who sells grain in bulk, shipping costs of bulk grain completely eliminates the price advantage over my LHBS.

So they managed to store 6 bikes in the space that could fit maybe 20 or 30 with a normal rack. Aren't they quite crowded over there?

Lawyers, what cases are you sorry you won? by navysilkin AskReddit

60% of new HIV cases come from male to male sexual contact(read anal sex). IV drug users account for only 9% of new infections.

Actually no. 60% of the new infections come from gay male sexual activity. Only 9% are IV drug users compared to 27% from heterosexual sexual activity.

You catch HIV, not AIDS. AIDS is what happens after years to many years if you don't treat your HIV infection.

How can I as a layperson get better at judging whether a scientist is trustworthy? by pelshatin askscience

How can I as a layperson get better at judging whether a scientist is trustworthy? by pelshatin askscience

[–]PostalPenguin 2 points3 points ago

This makes it simpler: don't trust a single scientist, trust a field of scientists. If numerous scientists come to the same conclusion via different methods you can trust their claims. If one solitary scientist makes extraordinary claims, demand extraordinary data.

If we should use antibiotics sparingly, why is daily antiseptic mouthwash OK? by sarcasm_or_empathyin askscience

[–]PostalPenguin 57 points58 points ago

It is typically much harder to develop resistance to disinfectants applied externally. This is because disinfectants and topically applied antibiotics can be much more toxic to both the human and the bacterial target without negatively impacting the human. Things like bleach and alcohol are very toxic to microorganisms due to broad damaging effects, damaging effects that would occur in humans if we tried to use them internally. Consequently, bacteria cannot evolve total resistance since the disinfectant hits so many targets.

For internal antibiotics, we must damage only bacterial proteins or processes without damaging host proteins or processes. Thus the antibiotics used internally tend to have much more specific targets like cell wall synthesis or ribosomal function. As a result, bacteria are able to more readily evolve resistance since only one or two proteins are inhibited.

However, that is not to say externally applied antimicrobials are fine to use prolifically as we are beginning to discover bacteria resistant to triclosan, found in numerous products like soap and toothpaste.

So the tl;dr version is that topically applied disinfectants like alcohol are able to damage numerous targets within the bacteria making resistance almost impossible. Think of it like a weed growing in a lawn. A weed can evolve to resist a pesticide that only targets the weed but allows the grass to grow but likely won't evolve resistance to napalm which would kill everything including the grass.

flesh eating disease outbreak? by Anillusion42in biology

[–]PostalPenguin 2 points3 points ago

An outbreak is determined by an increase of the disease over what statistically you would expect for a given population. So if for a given population you would predict 5 people to get flash eating disease, then getting 5 is not an outbreak. However, if you suddenly got 100 you'd have an outbreak.

The statistically predicted occurrences for a disease in a certain population are based on a lot of different things that an epidemiologist could better explain.

Help with sequence analysis by NavyRabbitin biology

[–]PostalPenguin 1 point2 points ago

Sequence of the reverse strand is complimentary to the forward strand.

I am not sure what you mean by how the results come of the sequencer. A Sanger sequencer sequences everything 5' to 3' due to the activity of the polymerase that incorporates the dye terminators and the capillary action that allows for separation of the different length DNA segments(shorter segments travel faster and are read first, thus the 5' end gets read first).

Any decent alignment software will align it regardless though there are options to tell it to only align to the + or - strand.

All the info I've read seems to say the driver started turning, saw the cyclist, stopped and the cyclist collided with the car. If the cyclist was passing a car on the right a car turning left would never see him. There is definitely not enough evidence for strangers on the Internet to declare the driver guilty.

You have a very distorted perception of how the justice system works. It doesn't work nearly as fast as you think plus the DA may not bother to file charges if they don't think enough evidence is there to demonstrate guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

I encounter this once a week. Get an airzound which will usually scare the dogs. Also, remind the couple that you will call animal control if you see their dog off leash again. Leash laws are not recommendations, theyre actual laws.

I'm a dog owner myself and nothing pisses me off more than people who can't control their dogs.
