I'm pretty sure they said you'd always be connected to blizzard's server. It's more about being able to play your 'single-player' character on blizzard servers, which couldn't be done previously because you'd just hack your character to have maximum stats and shit. If it was solely about drm they wouldn't have gone though the trouble of hosting the single player campaign as well, and would've used regular always-on drm.
Now, it would've been great if there was offline single player that excluded your character from playing online like in the previous game, but I'm not sure I would've used it.
It's kinda similar to their reasons for Starcraft's lack of lan, which wasn't really caused by regular piracy as much as KeSPA not paying Blizzard.
