TROPHY CASE

I'm an adult who hates my parents for mature reasons. What sentiments from your teenage years did you expect to outgrow, but didn't? by HonestyTimeThrowawayin AskReddit

But like I said, I've never even seen/heard of them outside of people bitching about them.

You know what? I don't pay attention to them and the only time I'm even aware of their existence is when people go on and on and on about how terrible and deluded they are.

I don't care. I don't give a shit about them at all.

Basically what you said above is "either you're with Occupy, or you're with the greedy corporate assholes"

There's a difference between being "with Occupy" and having a problem with their viewpoints.

I by no means consider myself "with Occupy", but I certainly acknowledge the validity of their primary complaints; Namely, that our current corporate-government system leads to all sorts of unethical behaviour that goes completely unchecked because it's perpetrated by members of powerful institutions.

What objectionable viewpoints characterise the Occupy movement, then?

I strongly oppose the viewpoints that the Occupy movement holds

How bizarre. Does that mean you support cheating, corruption, nepotism, insider-trading and a whole other range of unethical business practices used to cheat the system to enrich a very small group or amoral sociopaths?

Because that's what a lot of the Occupy viewpoints are. Now, I can understand you opposing the way in which their viewpoints have been expressed, but I can't for the life of me understand why you'd oppose their viewpoints themselves (unless you're a billionaire with no empathy at all).

I find with so many things like this it's easy just to glance at it, not comprehend the appeal, and then move on to something else.

I've found it to be really beneficial to say "OK, this is popular. Why? What keeps people watching this?

It has led to me enjoying a far greater range of sports, NASCAR included. There's a lot to appreciate if you actually try to appreciate it.

People who are already fans of the book will see this movie unless the trailer showed something completely terrible and off-base,

Which is why I will never, ever watch this movie.

this movie was made to make money, not artistically represent the book for art's sake. And they are going to market this movie doing whatever is necessary to make money.

Exactly. That's my complaint. Movies made to maximise profits at the expense of any artistic quality. Why not just throw the Wayans brothers in there for some cheap gags and get Black Eyed Peas to do the soundtrack?

It might make economic sense but that doesn't obviate the fact it's a fucking disgusting, money-grubbing treatment of a beautiful work of literature.

If you're going to do that sort of low-brow, populist shit, then why name your work after a legitimate piece of literature and drag it down too?

It's an interesting trailer to those who haven't heard of or read the book and like today's music.

Then why base it on the book? Especially a book as beautiful and understated as The Great Gatsby?

You're taking a classic piece of literature and smearing it in ephemeral 21st century bullshit and bright colours.

Completely misses the point and does no service to fans of the book whatsoever.

Why not just name it something else and make it vaguely based on The Great Gatsby story? Why even make the association if you're not going to respect the original text at all?

I'm not just ranting, I'd actually like answers to these questions.
