Can't afford a shisha, so i had to improvise by asaoifsain hookah

I've seen that in a book I have, always wanted to try and make one. Did you cut the shell in half for cleaning and then glue it back together?

Looking to add MIDI to an organ console by brentmjin midi

[–]Paisleyfrog 0 points1 point ago

I was just researching this tonight myself...I recently tore apart an old Allen organ, and was planning on turning one of the manuals into a MIDI controller. Anyway, I found this board:

http://store.highlyliquid.com/collections/midi-controllers/products/midi-cpu

Which allows you connect up to 128 switches, plus a few potentiometers. The price is decent, too.

Hiding the True Jesus: In reshaping American politics and society, the Christian Right has applied a distorted version of Jesus’s teachings, downplaying his pacifism and his contempt for wealth while emphasizing later revisions that didn’t threaten the powerful. by allliein politics

Actually, it had to do with the kind of slap, and the kind of social status it implied. The slap described in the verse is a backhanded slap across the face, the kind given by a master to a slave. Given that the left hand was not used, it was impossible to backhand the other cheek, and open-handed slaps were reserved for ones of equal social standing. So, "turn the other cheek" is a way of saying, "go ahead and do that again...but if you do, you'll do it as my equal."

This was huge, given the social structure of the day. Many elements of the Sermon on the Mount were ways for an oppressed people to regain dignity and a sense of control in situations where they had none.

May seem trivial but, How do you break coals? by STiKRzYin hookah

Band saw.

I've been using Sultan finger coals (hey, they're cheap), and I use a 9" saw to rip it down into little cylinders.

Beautiful work. I'm going to share them with my daughter tonight, who is trying to follow a similar path.

Your comment about 2012 and being addicted to Reddit is why I've redirected Facebook and Reddit to 0.0.0.0 in my hosts file at home. I've gotten a lot done since then :)

A piece of notched wood found in a Scotland cave turns out to be Europe's "earliest string instrument" - It's thought to be the bridge of a 2,300-year-old lyre.. “It pushes the history of complex music back more than a thousand years, into our darkest pre-history.” by anutensilin history

[–]Paisleyfrog 1 point2 points ago

2,300 years is ancient for a complex musical instrument in Europe. Older instruments have been found elsewhere, but in arid climates that are far more favorable for wood.

Part of the challenge in recreating ancient instruments is that there are few actual samples, and art is usually inaccurate (especially for instrument building).

Wisconsin Republican Senator Proposes Bill That Labels Single-Parenthood As Child Abuse by MSkogin wisconsin

[–]Paisleyfrog -1 points0 points ago

Exactly right. Those statistics are backed up by the Department of Health & Human Services. They state that children in single parent homes (whom are overwhelmingly single mothers) are 74% to 165% more likely to suffer some form of abuse, as compared to children from two-parent households. the headline is painfully inflammatory.

What's the deal with NerfHaven? by hjf11393in Nerf

[–]Paisleyfrog 3 points4 points ago

The restriction from the trading forum is because there has been a lot of problems in the past with trades going sour with really new people. They want people to be more established members before trading. It's also something that stems from the board owners...they don't like the trading forum.

As far as signing up for wars, you can still do that...just use the PM system and let the war organizer know you're coming that way. Even then, the FNG status shouldn't last longer than a month, and then you have unrestricted access.

What's the deal with NerfHaven? by hjf11393in Nerf

[–]Paisleyfrog 4 points5 points ago

Some history is in order.

Nerfhaven was set up by the original members specifically to be a haven from what they saw as annoying stuff present on other boards. As such, they moderated their forum with an iron fist, and basically no fucks were given. You think the moderation is tough now? Perma-bans used to be given out so frequently that for a while, Nerfhaven sold a shirt with the forum ban message on it. And that affected how I behaved there. Before I posted my first homemade, I read the entire homemades forum to see if I was going to post a old design, lest I get banned.

Langley is due a shit-ton of credit for the new FNG system. Before, the new member list was weeded out by hand. That's why NH has always had a low level of spam. However, as the site grew, it became unworkable, and the waiting time became unreasonable. My wait time five years ago was about a month. It was way over a year for a while.

The rules at NH are pretty heavy-handed, but then, it lets people know what they're in for before they even sign up. Don't want heavy moderation?. Go away. However, it also makes NH one of the best signal to noise ratio forums that I've ever been on. They realize that a forum is about trading information, and that crappy posts and poor typing make that more difficult.

VACC has stated over and over that he doesn't care about growing the community, just about maintaining the quality of his site. No, it's not to everyone's taste. But, like you said, there are other forums.

Does it matter what tobacco I put in my hookah? by LSD_freakoutin hookah

[–]Paisleyfrog 1 point2 points ago

What I did was just mix a small amount of pipe tobacco with plant glycerine from a health food store until it was moist, and then added a dash of unsulphored molasses on top. It tasted like an English blend, so I'll count it as a success.

You can look up homemade shisha recipes for more ideas. I'm going to wash the tobacco for another batch, which is really just boiling it for a few minutes to remove some nicotine.

Does it matter what tobacco I put in my hookah? by LSD_freakoutin hookah

[–]Paisleyfrog 5 points6 points ago

First, please tell me you mean menthol. Methanol tobacco sounds scary.

I just tried this last night. I've been more interested in unflavored shishas lately, so I added some molasses and glycerin to an English blend that I smoke in my briars. It smoked very well, and I'll probably try making more of my own shisha in the future....but I'll wash the tobacco first. Unwashed pipe tobacco has an impressive kick to it.

You can, but most people end up not liking lighting coals on their stove (marks on the burner, ash, etc). Plus, your stove isn't portable.

Some questions about Zaghloul... by Paisleyfrogin hookah

[–]Paisleyfrog[S] 0 points1 point ago

The traditional way of smoking Zaghloul is to put the coal directly on top of the more densely packed upper layer. The upper layer burns, but that's all. You would think that it would be crazy harsh, but it wasn't.

As fas as the consistency, Zaghloul is an unflavored shisha made by Nakhla, and is supposed to be pretty dry. I just think that this goes a bit beyond what's expected. I've read that it usually comes as a "brick".

As far as my hoses, that's the thing...all my hoses are unwashable. If it ghosts really badly, I have enough hoses that I could dedicate one to Zag.

Hookah vs. Cigarettes? by oneineightbillionin hookah

[–]Paisleyfrog 6 points7 points ago

This conversation comes up pretty often. Here's a link to the last one.

TL;DR: The general consensus is that hookah isn't as bad as cigarettes for a variety of reasons, but still isn't good for you. Moderation is the key.

The top ten things heard at a loose leaf tea shop. by michirooin tea

If you want to pick further nits, it's not a tisane unless it's made of barley.

Not really. That's the etymological source of the word, but it's an obsolete meaning (similar to how "herbal tea" is generally accepted, even if it isn't technically correct).
