Larry Lessig: TED How creativity is being strangled by the Law--interesting concept of Governmental prohibition and competitive 'law'. by BrockAtkinsin Anarcho_Capitalism

How many times can an "intellectual" fool claim that the US is a democracy? ಠ_ಠ

Frequent Fox News and Sean Hannity guest, Rev Jesse Lee Peterson, says women shouldn't be allowed to vote: "I think that one of the greatest mistakes America made was to allow women the opportunity to vote" by mepperin politics

I'm a Christian who is very socialistic...voluntarily. For example, I adopted a local 13 year old boy from the foster care system in February & currently have two foster daughters. If someone tried to force me to do these things, I'd be more apt to forcibly defend my freedom than to comply.

What most social(ist)-liberals don't get is that charity by force is no charity at all...

And FTR: I want the state out of marriage...whether hetero, homo, or poly. I also loathe the war on drugs, though I've never partaken. I do not support any of the wars which have been waged in my lifetime (Carter & beyond). If more people believed like me, I'd sooner grab my rifle to oust those who run other's lives through force, than vote in our failed republic (now mostly democracy)...but I do vote & have become a delegate to the state GOP convention because the masses are cowed (as I used to be).

I'm with you on the first one...but what exactly is un-Christian about wanting people to be free from influence-by-force in economic matters?

Not in its original form. That was later added to give more power to the federal government...which, ironically, is now being used to abridge the rights of the minority.

[–]PacoBedejo 0 points1 point ago

How about, instead of letting bigoted majorities force out minorities under threat of police violence, we protect the basic civil liberties of all Americans?

So, the mechanism to do so is to allow bigoted majorities to jackboot minorities across the board...leaving only other nations as refuge? ಠ_ಠ

Good Guy Ron Paul by TacticalMonikerin Libertarian

[–]PacoBedejo -3 points-2 points ago

Placing the federal government in charge of the state governments perverted the entire design of our government, for the worse. The federal government was only empowered to do those few specific things which are enumerated to it in the federal constitution. All others are reserved to either the people or the states, per the words of the federal constitution. That system would have worked pretty well, as far as neighbors-controlling-neighbors systems go. We've twisted it into an extremely powerful central government & the nations is going to shit. /shrug

Good Guy Ron Paul by TacticalMonikerin Libertarian

[–]PacoBedejo 4 points5 points ago

And the same applies to an over-powered federal government. The great thing about keeping the power at the state level is that people can move to states with laws which are to their liking. I'd really prefer anarcho-capitalism, but if we must have central masters, I'd rather have mine in Indianapolis than Washington D.C.

the federal one would and should take precedent.

I suppose one could have that opinion...unless they understand the English language & the original, restrained purpose of the federal government.

If only there were some method by which state laws & constitutions could be nullified or amended...

Does your state not have its own constitution which guarantees & protects your rights? My state's constitution actually affirms my rights more strongly than the federal one.

More than 200,000 long-term jobless Americans will lose their unemployment checks this week, when eight states roll off the federal extended benefits program. by vegetable_offenderin news

[–]PacoBedejo 1 point2 points ago*

I can offer no numbers. It's only anecdotal based upon my experiences in my locale. Methinks those you've described are the minority & were unfortunate to either work in dysfunctional departments of successful companies or successful departments of dysfunctional companies.

$40k/yr is about normal for low-level management in Indiana. For reference, my 1600 ft² house cost $85k in the suburbs of a city with 300,000 residents. I make $42k/yr as a Project Manager.

Indiana maxes at $330/wk pre-tax. If you just lost a $15/hr, 40hr/wk job, many are left with the following scenario:

  • You just lost $600/wk gross (~$450/wk net)
  • Your monthly net income was $1950
  • You now receive $330/wk if you choose to defer taxes
  • You now have to adjust your monthly budget to $1430 ($520 less)

There are four ways that Hoosiers tend to deal with the $520/mo dilemma:

  • Reduce monthly spending by removing non-essentials & eating Ramen
  • Increase monthly budget by doing work under the table to regain the lost $520/mo while receiving unemployment payments
  • Find a new job between $13/hr & $15/hr to make the transportation & labor "worth it" financially
  • Find a new job for $7.25 to $11/hr & reduce monthly spending by an even larger margin than if you're sitting on ass

If they're stupid/proud enough to take a, for common example, $9/hr, 32hr/wk job, their monthly budget plummets to ~$1250. That's $180/mo less than unemployment. On top of that difference, they then have to shoulder the cost of transportation & meals for work...which can easily combine to $100/mo, even if you're being quite frugal. This puts you almost $300/mo behind where sitting on ass puts you.

Basically, in our zeal to protect people, we've set up a system which is bound to fail by actively encouraging people to not seek re-employment, unless they find their dream jobs. Let's face it...despite the shitty economy, a large portion of those who've become unemployed did so as a result of their previous employers identifying them as more chaff-like than wheat-like. In most cases, these people will not do well to hold out for a $19/hr ($40k/yr) management position.

Personally, I think it's pretty damned distracting to have the pages keep trying to close on you due to the binding. It's more comfortable & relaxing to read books on my Droid X than in dead-tree format.

Republicans Are Finally Getting Nervous About Ron Paul's Secret Delegate Strategy by davidreiss666in Libertarian

I adopted a 13 year old boy from the foster care system. I'm open with him about sexuality, but at the same time have Windows Live Family Security installed on all of our PCs. Since I didn't have a chance to guide him & his reason for being in "the system" was sex-related, I've determined that software accountability & parental openness will be the best combination to help him grow into a well adjusted adult who neither makes skin-dresses nor is afraid of cooties.

Half-assedly was an adjective describing the multiplayer portion. I completely agree that the RPG half is definitely a lot better than KOTOR.

Seriously though...it's like the devs had never played an MMO before. The game still feels like half-assedly multiplayer KOTOR, not a rich MMO.

Five major UK internet service providers ordered to prevent users from accessing The Pirate Bay by harpmanin worldnews

[–]PacoBedejo 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I know they're far from the same, legally-speaking...but they're quite similar morally (assuming you don't think a song is truly worth $150,000). It's a matter of holding the information provider responsible for the actions of the information acquirer. Holding TPB to blame for piracy isn't dissimilar to holding a public library to blame for a well-educated arsonist...excepting the fact that an arsonist actually destroys real property...
