10 Lapus Lazuli for more value than one diamond? I can live with that.

TIL that there is a photograph of Planet Earth taken from a record distance of about 3.7 billion miles away by Heesterin todayilearned

[–]PSBlake 3 points4 points ago

It would have taken more than five hours for the signal to travel from Voyager 1 to the Deep Space Network.

C = 186,282 mi/s

3.7*109 miles / 186,282 miles/second = roughly 19862.36 seconds, or 331 minutes, or 5.51 hours.

I may never complain about network latency again.

Different perspectives on what constitutes proper Trek, I suppose. I've always seen Star Trek as highlighting the ongoing progression of Earth from a planet full of backwater primitives to a Foundation & Empire-style intergalactic superpower.

Dat Odyssey 2.

Having owned an Odyssey 1, I can only imagine the ad copy:

Tired of having to stick acetate sheets of printed images onto your TV screen? Sounds like it's time for a new Odyssey.

Magnavox Odyssey 2. Now with actual graphics.

It's a lazy plot device when used poorly, as with Voyager. Voyager's time travel consistently fell into two categories:

  1. Reset button - We can kill anyone, destroy the ship, wreck any relationship or derail any established premise or characterization, then just jump back in time and undo it.

  2. Chasing our own tail (AKA the Boostrap Paradox, Ontological Paradox, or Reductive Causal Loop) - We investigate an anomaly which sends us back in time, where we cause the very anomaly that sent us back in time. If we hadn't investigated it, it wouldn't have existed.

Since the JJ Abrams alternate universe story is pretty much required to fall into the first category, and may also involve the second category, I can understand why people might find it tired - but it can be done well: Deep Space Nine has some particularly enjoyable time travel stories, one of which is widely considered the best Trek episode of all time, from any series.

That's what I'm proposing: A show which revisits events from a different perspective, changing the context of seemingly incidental things, and using the whole of Trek canon as its playground.

I feel like they keep overlooking the obvious. Imagine Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Start it out as an anthology show highlighting various established Trek characters and their experiences in Starfleet, but then toss in some unexpected cameos from non-contemporary characters. Picard shows up while a young Kirk is late for class. Archer is mistaken for an intruder, but disappears before the matter can be fully investigated.

What then follows would be an out-of-sequence time travel story mixing all eras of Star Trek lore. Each episode would still have an anthology story component, but would integrate into the overall theme of the ongoing time travel story.

Seven seasons, guaranteed.

This hat may look familiar to some of you, and it should: It's taken from one of our oldest and most beloved franchises, and serves as the first stepping stone on a long path of further game releases for the franchise over the coming weeks.

Yes, you asked, we listened, after years of silence we can finally announce that as of the end of this sentence you will not only be able to purchase, but also download and play the newest installment in our favorite franchise: Ladies and gentlemen, I give you... Ricochet II!

Bad news: It's an out-of-print CCG with over 1600 unique cards.

Good news: Two of the three cards which comprise this specific situation are Commons, and the third is a Fixed starter from the Episode 8 Agency deck.

That's all well and good for Dwarf Fortress and CaptainDuck, but what I'm looking for is a group, site, or video series specifically dedicated to deciphering games with poor conveyance, oblique interfaces, or games which just require a particular mindset to "get."

/r/Gaming: Does this exist? "How to Get Into [GameName]" by PSBlakein gaming

[–]PSBlake[S] 0 points1 point ago

Okay, perhaps I need to explain exactly why this isn't what I'm asking for.

Imagine someone asked for advice on finding a good electronics store which also carried a reasonable selection of video games. A helpful answer would be something along the lines of "Fry's tends to carry a bit of everything, and their staff is pretty helpful - Same for Micro Center - but if you're okay with an online store, Newegg is probably the way to go."

Your answers have essentially been "WalMart."

Yes, maybe I can find the specific information and context I'm looking for by digging through hours of Let's Plays and hobbyist reviews, but I'm asking if there is a series or website specifically dedicated to "How to get into ____" for a range of obscure or obliquely counter-intuitive games. That information may be contained in a miniscule subset of Youtube and Wikipedia, but simply saying "Go here" is tantamount to someone asking "Which restaurant makes the best pizza?" and you replying "Italy."

Remarkably unhelpful. You're setting a new standard in useless advice with that one. You may as well just say "The Internet" and be done with it.

From this other, similar geeklist, the first entry, which is about the Deadlands/Doomtown CCG:

Most horses in the game are either flesh and blood or gadgets created by the Collegium, the resident mad scientists of the game. However, there's one exception - the Penny Farthing. Then there's the Tastes Like Chicken card that makes one of your Harrowed dudes eat a non-gadget horse. Lastly, there's The Ghost - the undead spirit of a familiar US President.

Combine the three, and you too can watch Abraham Lincoln eat a bicycle!

Lego Batman 2, is open world, has questing, and features a ton of heroes and villains including: Superman, The Flash, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Joker, Killer Croc, Poison Ivy, and more. by cheesy_ninja45in gaming

Because "Lego Justice League" isn't an existing Lego brand.

And before you ask, although Lego Super Heroes is and existing brand, it's not specifically DC-based.

Since the game takes place is Gotham with primarily Batman-centric villains, calling it "Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes" makes sense.
