Even if you're in a not-great place mentally, both drugs can be beneficial. If you're in a safe environment, but not in a very content place in your life, a trip could be very helpful. I like the saying, "there are no bad trips, there are only difficult trips." Sometimes a trip will bring to the forefront some problem that you've been repressing or denying, and you'll be forced to face that problem on your trip. Sometimes this is terrifying, depressing, and/or overwhelming. But often, in retrospect, you will come out the other end with some positive effect. You may make a decision while tripping that you wouldn't have made otherwise and, in retrospect, you'll realize it's what you should have been doing all along. I've had a few good trips and a few that weren't so good, but each time I've had a tough time, it's made me a better person in the long run.

That said, many people can get a similar, more manageable effect from marijuana.
