Noteworthy Memorial Day Games/Apps for Sale by No-Shit-Sherlockin ipad

Addicting? Yes, but like I said it can get repetitive... Challenging but repetitive.

Replay value... Hard to say as I'm still not done with the main campaign and to top it off, they just added a big chunk of new, free content for it in yesterday's update.

IMO it's well worth the $3.

Or tell them to download AppZapp or AppShopper but that misses the point; I wanted to start discussions on the games/apps to help sort the wheat from the chaff.

It's also compatible with the 'Joypad' app which allows you to control the game via your iPhone... But I agree that it's an awesome game and even the vanilla iPad controls are very good.

Dunno, I just bought it and haven't had time to play it yet... I imagine it's no different than the board game though as it's not some bastardization like the God-awful Monopoly Hotels game.

Edit: Just loaded it up, other than the cheesy background music and a new 'slight of hand' mechanic (which you can thankfully turn off) it's pretty much as expected; a Monopoly game. It has tabletop style multiplayer with optional AI opponents and Bluetooth or Wifi multiplayer but sadly there doesn't seem to be an online, random human opponent mode. :/

Thx, added. Missed it since it went on sale yesterday apparently.

I already own and have spent countless hours playing Tiger Woods and FIFA so far. While they do have in-app purchases, they offer nothing you can't earn in game by simply playing. So I don't really see what you would have a problem with in terms of restrictions. I can't vouch for the quality of the other EA games though as I have yet to play them.

Does anyone use their iPad to read? by kpower05in ipad

[–]No-Shit-Sherlock 6 points7 points ago

I own an iPad and a Kindle... but unlike the others who have commented so far, I still much prefer reading on my Kindle. The glare on the iPad can be quite significant. I'm sitting outside in the shade right now but am still struggling to see the text on the screen of my iPad. It's practically unusable in the direct sun. Even Inside, bright lights reflect off the iPad screen which can be annoying. You don't get those problems with the matte surface of the Kindle; it's glare free even in direct sun.

The other issue is battery life. The new iPad has great battery life (7-8hrs of use) but takes 5+ hours to fully recharge. So if you forget to charge it overnight you may be in trouble during classes. But that isn't a problem with the Kindle, which I only have to charge once every week or so with heavy use and it fully recharges in about an hour.

So if you're looking for a device just for reading novels/textbooks, I would suggest the Kindle over an iPad. However the major advantage of the iPad is that it's obviously way more versatile; Games, Productivity, Note taking, Web Browsing, Reddit, etc... and nothing beats reading comics on the iPad! :P

A couple of iPad questions - Carrier lock and data. by artissin ipad

The 'location services' based maps still work on the wifi only iPad as its done via geoIP. All that not having the built in iPad GPS means is that you cannot use a real-time GPS app (e.g. The $50 TomTom app) since you cannot get constantly updating real-time GPS coords. You can, however buy and external GPS unit specifically for the wifi only iPad if you really want that feature... And I wouldn't be surprised if there is a jailbreak app that allows you to simply use the GPS in your tethered iPhone either, though I haven't looked into that yet.

Just so you're aware, even though I disagree with you, I actually appreciate you challenging me on this issue and providing links. I will give them a read as the topic of internationally sanctioned wars is something I am definitely not as well versed on as I would like.

p.s. Do you not consider the US involvement in the Gulf war to be, at the very least, a questionable conflict of interest given that the Iraqi dictator they were fighting was one they had, up until very recently, supported and armed?

Because they are knowingly exploiting the idealism and naiveté of youth by making war seem without consequence and, in a way, glamorous.

It's a similar ethical line of reasoning for why cigarettes should not (and IMO rightly cannot) be marketed to high school students either.

Right. Because as we all know, International law and custom is always ethical and above reproach.

Here's the problem I have with that... Saddam was initially a US supported dictator. Why did the US support, arm and train his armies? Because he was an enemy of Iran and wanted to go to war with them. Why did the US want to support Saddam's attack against Iran? Because Iran dared defy American interests by ousting the dictator put in place by a US orchestrated coup.

So you see... while that was a gross oversimplification, it's really hard to call the first Gulf war 'just' if you have any understanding of the US 'involvement' in the shaping of the modern Middle East.

Why again can soldiers be at fault for a war they have no control over?

Was there a military draft in the US I was unaware of? Are second and third tours of duty compulsory?

And oh yes, 9/11... I totally forgot it was 'the middle east' that was behind that. I guess that totally justifies America's actions. Sorry.

Yeah, I'm a cynical old fuck I suppose. There is nothing wrong with youthful idealism per se, but in America there definitely seems to be an accepted culture of idealism exploitation that really needs to be challenged and destroyed.

For example, the fact that US military recruiters are even allowed to enter high schools is absolutely despicable IMO.

You can usually see them trying to reconcile the military hero worship and the anti-military response they got from a veteran. The topic changes pretty quickly after that.

The topic definitely seems to be the largest Elephant in the Room in America and I really hope it gets addressed on a National level some day... because I lived in the US for a number of years and generally like Americans, but I fucking despise your government and have very little respect for those who willingly become cogs in its war machine.

I do respect that you are no longer blinded by the idealism that drove you to become a soldier and don't seem to be afraid to challenge others on that same issue, though. We can't change our past, after all.

I'm gonna join you on the US military hate train.

Does it weird anyone else out how most Americans, even supposed Liberals, practically worship (or at the very least, constantly make excuses for) their soldiers?

"They're fighting for our freedom." No, they're not.
"Just because the soldiers have been forced to fight an unjust war by our government, you can't blame them." Yes, you can.
"We should send our armed services members care packages, despite generally agreeing that this war is unjust and bankrupting us." No, you shouldn't. etc...

However, while I wouldn't say the American military has never been a force for good, as they did fight in WWII like you said, I do agree that their motivations have been far from noble ever since then.

And let's not even talk about all the South American, SE Asian and Middle Eastern coups and proxy wars that the US government was directly involved in. Actions they justified on the flimsy grounds of 'protecting National interests and security' or 'promoting Regional stability' (the most Orwellian use of those words ever). That's a whole 'nother can of worms.

Are there any post apocalyptic novels where it has a western feel to it? by running_guy40in books

[–]No-Shit-Sherlock 0 points1 point ago

Warning, 'Six-String Samurai' is one of those B-movies that manages to transcend its terribleness to become something truly amazing... So unless you're a fan of those type of low budget, unashamedly campy movies you will probably hate it.

And if it isn't your cup of tea, for a more mainstream post-apoc with a western feel movie check out 'The Book of Eli'. 'Priest' also has that same sort of feel despite being a vampire movie based on a comic book.

I just finished the entirety of The Black Company by Glen Cook, and now I want to talk about it. by TheMadMatiin books

[–]No-Shit-Sherlock 2 points3 points ago

Seconding Erikson. Malazan is like a vine ripened, oak-cask matured version of Black Company; Similar gritty, complex characters, similar ballsy 'unafraid to kill off main characters' and enthralling, epic storyline... but it takes place in a universe on par with Middle-Earth in terms of depth and scope. I absolutely love both series, but Erikson really took it to a whole new level.

The only problem I found with introducing people to Erikson is that his first Malazan novel 'Gardens of the Moon' is written in such a way that you either sink or swim. He drops you smack dab in the middle of this fully fleshed out multi-planar universe with a rich history and mythology, populated with unique mortal races, ascendants and gods, interwoven with a magic system unlike any other in the genre... But he makes no apologies for not explaining any of that to you at the start, instead just trusting you to figure it out on your own. You really have to work to understand what is going on, which is made especially difficult by the sheer volume of separate story-lines and main characters. However, if you soldier through the first hundred or so pages of the book you won't be able to stop reading until you reach the very last word of the final novel.

The Malazan series is damn near perfection in the otherwise tired, cliche-filled Fantasy genre.

A couple of iPad questions - Carrier lock and data. by artissin ipad

[–]No-Shit-Sherlock 1 point2 points ago

1) I'm not sure if they're locked (i.e. you can't switch carriers after you buy it) but I very much doubt it given the iPad isn't subsidised like with phones. But only Rogers, Bell and Telus have iPad data plans available up here in Canada so you don't really have much selection anyways.

2). Nothing if you own an iPhone with a data plan. You can simply tether your iPad to your iPhone via Bluetooth in lieu of buying a 3G/4G iPad. That's what I do when I'm away from home and it works just fine. The only major disadvantage is that you burn through the battery of both devices rather than just the iPad's by doing this.

My advice; if you already own an iPhone with a data plan, save yourself some money and just get the basic iPad with wifi only.

Any websites where I can stream free movies? by Godfarberin ipad

[–]No-Shit-Sherlock 0 points1 point ago

Or just get the PLEX client for your iPad and the PLEX server for your desktop (PC/Mac)... It works without needing to jailbreak and IMO is better than XBMC anyways.

For me, since I generally treat my iPad like a laptop screen sitting horizontal next to my wireless keyboard, having everything available in landscape mode would be ideal. But honestly it's not that big of a deal. I just thought I would mention the vertical orientation since it's an annoyance in an otherwise flawless, free app.

p.s. any plans to add more features, like being able to upload images to existing albums on our imgur pro account?
