ELI5: Why can't I taste "notes of vanilla and tones of earth and honey" when I drink red wine? by MrTurklein explainlikeimfive

I did a blind taste of this, and the unanimous result was that the aerated wine was preferred.

When you pay for something at a bar/restaurant, you're also paying for the heating/air-conditioning, power bill, delivery fees, cleaning crew, staffing, ambiance, etc., etc., etc. Please understand this. If this is insane to you, BUY YOUR SHIT AT A STORE AND COOK OR DRINK IT AT HOME.

So why a 50% markup on the steak, give or take, which requires more cooking facilities and cleaning, and is more perishable versus a 100% to 200% markup on wine, which requires very little ?

Restaurant wine is a ripoff. They charge that much because they can. Yes, I do drink at home.

It's great to find these standbys for when you've served so much that you don't want to pull out another big gun.

But are we in the West radically misinterpreting Muslim sexual mores, particularly the meaning to many Muslim women of being veiled or wearing the chador?

In the case of Taliban Afghanistan, the answer is no.

Taliban Afganistan is not the entire Muslim world

Did I say it was?

Of course it's not the entire Muslim world. It's the most repressive part of the Muslim world, the part where you can get acid chucked in your face for not weiring a veil or you can see your daughters poisoned for attending school.

That's exactly why it's silly of her to give it as an example of Western "misperceptions." The Western perception is that Taliban Afghanistan is repressive, particularly against women. That perception happens to be correct.

Any proofreaders here? by riorevealedin grammar

[–]Nessie 0 points1 point ago

Just curious. If so, do you (still) enjoy your job? What's good and what's not so good about it? Can one pay the bills being a proofreader?

You can make a living if you move into more specialized areas, like technical editing and writing in finance, medicine, patents or computing. But like most editorial/publishing work, you're never going to make bucketloads of cash.

I make a decent living doing this, but I live overseas where native-English editing is more in demand.

What piffle.

When Americans were being prepared for the invasion of Afghanistan, the Taliban were demonised for denying cosmetics and hair colour to women; when the Taliban were overthrown, Western writers often noted that women had taken off their scarves.

But are we in the West radically misinterpreting Muslim sexual mores, particularly the meaning to many Muslim women of being veiled or wearing the chador? And are we blind to our own markers of the oppression and control of women?

....At home, in the context of marital intimacy, Victoria's Secret, elegant fashion and skin care lotions abounded. The bridal videos that I was shown, with the sensuous dancing that the bride learns as part of what makes her a wonderful wife, and which she proudly displays for her bridegroom, suggested that sensuality was not alien to Muslim women

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that women in Taliban Afghanistan were not wearing Victoria's secret lingerie, and making and showing sensual wedding videos.

I think the membership is refundalbe if you cancel before the end of the first year. Unless you don't want that hassle. Japanese Costco is great for cheese, deli meats, and veg. It's the only place I've seen Romaine lettude. Also bulk dry goods like canned olives and snacks. Oh, and the wine section kicks ass.

Living overseas: Question about foreign income exclusion and foreign tax credit by Nessiein tax

Thanks, I think it's something like 90,000 dollars, so I'm within that limit for excluding foreign earned income even when I combine my salary income and freelance income.
