Guy Debord predicted our distracted society | The Society of the Spectacle offered in 1967 an eerily accurate portrait of our image-saturated, mediated times by Qwill2in HistoryofIdeas

Once I started reading Society of the Spectacle, the first thing it reminded me of was Baudrillard, who was talking about similar issues at the same time [except in the opposite direction]. Sure enough, here's an interview where he discusses Debord the Situationists:

ELIC: How does the Sun know when it's time to wake up? by kukkuzejtin ExplainLikeImCalvin

[–]NedlytheEighth 4 points5 points ago

It's a little-known fact that time zones were actually established by ancient roosters. Pope Julius XVI tended a chicken coop in the Vatican, and by cross-referencing his sundial with the roosters, was able to establish time zones. Because he was the Pope, he was able to tell the Sun when to be and where, including on what day -- hence the Julian calendar.

I think one can have been nouned. But once you've been nouned, it's pretty difficult to verb ever again.

Part of the problem is they don't always say grace at dinner. She certainly doesn't, and really only her dad cares.

Why do North Americans refrigerate eggs? by caitlingtonin AskReddit

Actually, there's a pretty interesting economic divide [here in the States] between white and wheat bread, due to a number of historic factors.

Currently whole-wheat or brown bread tends to be consumed more by people of middle-or upper-class background; by contrast, bread prepared with processed wheat (white bread), which is less expensive, is more often the choice of working-class consumers. The reason for this difference is a historical reversal of fortune. The white flour was once that of the elites, who would even color it with alum. The highly refined flour was reserved for those with great status, whereas the whole-grain flours were those of the poor. Source

As these things often do, the white bread trickled down from the higher classes to the lower classes. Then we found out white bread is unhealthy, leading to a proliferation of older-style breads among the upper classes, while white bread maintains its popularity and "American-ness."

Also, the 1950s ruined all food, especially bread.

Apparently Elephant Gargoyles are a thing?

An elegant elephant

Thank you, internet, for satiating the sudden craving I had from looking at the internet.

I was eating at an Olive Garden with my gf's family. She started digging in, so I followed suit. Then I noticed nobody else was and realized her dad was very patiently waiting to say grace. We were "ungrateful eaters," that night.

ELIC: How do snakes move if they don't have feet or legs? by hovercraft_mechanicin ExplainLikeImCalvin

[–]NedlytheEighth 1 point2 points ago

Some snakes can actually move uphill. These snakes are able to control the Earth's gravity to allow them to "fall" from one place to the other -- across the ground, through a field, even up a tree. The wriggling helps them control their direction so they don't fall somewhere they don't want to be.
