The Purpose of Spectacular Wealth, According to a Spectacularly Wealthy Guy by marquis_of_chaosin Foodforthought

When I said "market" I was intending to include the material benefits therefrom, which is what the aluminum can example is. I gauged that Conard views the market as the end because he values work so much:

“God didn’t create the universe so that talented people would be happy,” he said. “It’s not beautiful. It’s hard work. It’s responsibility and deadlines, working till 11 o’clock at night when you want to watch your baby and be with your wife. It’s not serenity and beauty.”

These concerns don't apply to r/Dashboard, except for the ad block concern. Maybe you could set it up to auto-hide the sidebar for r/Dashboard only?

The market is a means to an end; it is not the end itself.

IamA Nobel Prize-winning economist and New York Times columnist. by nytimeskrugmanin IAmA

The best argument I’ve heard against deficit spending in the current situation is that we have in fact been stimulating the economy for the past 11 years – every year the government has borrowed money increasing debt, it has acted as a stimulus, regardless of the fact that it wasn’t intended to. Understanding things this way, it’s argued that our economy is overstimulated. While the debt money wasn’t spent efficiently (e.g. military spending isn’t as effective at creating jobs as other types of government spending), it still looks like a stretch to argue that it was not significantly stimulative. What would your rebuttal be?

Hilary Rosen was right if you understand proper semantics of it.

http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/article/2012/apr/13/context-hilary-rosens-comment-ann-romney-never-wor/

The sole words being taken out of context are: "His wife has actually never worked a day in her life." Out of context, this seems like a critique of the lack of effort Ann Romney has had to make to make do in life. In context, Rosen's use of the word "work" clearly refers to career, which Ann Romney decidedly has not pursued - I don't think there is any debate about whether taking care of children qualifies as a career, it just doesn't.

Therefore, the statement being true and unoffensive, and that sole line in Rosen's series of words being the only one of concern, there really is no issue here, and this article lacks sufficient foundation.

So can somebody please explain to me why 'socialist' has such a negative connotation in America? by ItsAPokemonBattlein politics

[–]Nealix 1 point2 points ago

It's seen as something that detracts from liberty. "Socialist health care" shouldn't even be a thing, really. Socialism has plenty of definitions, some better than others, but a convenient definition is that it's the government committing to public services that are ordinarily provided by the private market. All of this sounds ordinary and obvious until you consider the fact that the United States is the only developed country without some sort of universal health care. So, governments ordinarily do health care work, except in the United States ... unless you're over 65 and sign up for Medicare x_x

Will higher tax rates do anything to help balance the budget? You might be surprised by the answer. by DrAbroin politics

[–]Nealix 1 point2 points ago

He doesn't talk about enough tax rates to make a comprehensive argument, and this guys charts don't seem to pay attention to how debt, deficits and economic environments (e.g. the tech boom of the 90s) played on GDP. It is well known that the Laffer Curve peaks at around 70%. Given his weak charts and disregard of many things, he's making an argument by selective observation.

Need some advice by picnic2812in OneY

[–]Nealix 11 points12 points ago

Firstly, your story is so ambiguous that even the smartest and most insightful redditor wouldn't be able to tell you anything useful, not to mention it's littered with typical-reddit-response bait (e.g. fiance gets mad for not responding to texts within 5 minutes, redditors predictably respond "dump that bitch").

Secondly, this is something for r/relationships or r/relationship_advice, not r/OneY.

I did not like all of the introversion/superiority stuff. I would have emphasized the weaknesses of introversion more to seem less pompous.
