The role of sparring in reality-based training by Narurain martialarts

Lighthearted, but accurate.

Sambo vs BJJ by Narurain martialarts

[–]Narura[S] 1 point2 points ago

For the record, I'm not suggesting either style is better or worse than the other. Aside from the fact this is just one match-up, I don't know enough about either to really comment. Hope this provokes some discussion.

I know that there are foreign female hosts, are there many foreign male hosts that you know of?

Kung fu master is passionate about shinpads by primejamestoneyin martialarts

He spreads a lot of misinformation, in particular see his take on groundfighting. But in this instance, I agree with him 100%.

Are the martial arts for me? by baaaarkin martialarts

Techincally, "senshido" has a "do" in it.

But I kid, I'm a big fan of Richard Dimitri's work :)

Saw it the other day. The Raid is my favourite action/martial arts movie, in terms of pure action and brutality.

A good illustration of why you need to stay on your feet. If that had been three guys, he could've easily ended up dead.

Have you ever used the discipline gained through martial arts to defuse a situation? by [deleted]in martialarts

[–]Narura 1 point2 points ago

You dealt with that well, but you have to think about the future. It's not normal behaviour for a father to physically attack his son EVER, and especially not in the way you've described.

For your own safety and whoever else you live with, I think that you need to talk to somebody about this, and possibly get the authorities involved.

A wing chun demo where people actually get hit. by Narurain martialarts

[–]Narura[S] 1 point2 points ago

For the record, I don't know anything about wing chun. Just thought this looked interesting, as there's a fair amount of actual contact, though there may be some criticism as to its true "aliveness".

"The White Belt Bible: Judo, Aikido and BJJ", free on iTunes (x-post from r/bjj) by locnloadin martialarts

Thanks for that. Downloaded it yesterday -- was a good introduction to the grappling arts for a newbie.

Am I enrolled in a McDojo :S? by bauerFTWin martialarts

[–]Narura 7 points8 points ago

You'd also think that McDojos have an interest in promoting the superiority of their school/system above all others, guaranteeing your continued and exclusive patronage. Organising free seminars exposing you to other martial arts, which may in turn uncover certain weaknesses in your current system, wouldn't be good for business assuming it is a McDojo.

Hey reddit, what about crying in material-arts? by butt_basherin martialarts

[–]Narura 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, there's a clip of Lyoto Machida after winning (or defending?) his title. It goes something like, "I train every day, I train SO hard, starts crying like an eight year old."

Tearing up is a common response to an adrenaline dump. It's no big deal.

Again, there's a big difference between a few tears leaking out and wailing like a baby. I think you'll find the latter is a lot less likely than you think :)

Red Zone Knife Defence - a realistic knife defence that I'm fond of. by phaunain martialarts

[–]Narura 0 points1 point ago

That statistic seems about right. But I suck, so I think I die about 50% of the time :P

User-posted videos in this subreddit would be sweet. I'll see if I can post something up next week too.

Also, cheers for the Dog Brothers recommendation, I got the DVDs -- very cool! I personally think the knife defence is a little fiddly compared to what I'm used to, but lots of awesome content. I'm also really fascinated with the Kali false lead. I know nothing about FMA, so that was quite novel for me.

Honestly, I've done a lot of full contact knife drills, and dodging a knife is not enough. There's definitely not enough time to run away when the person is up close and rushing you. He will always be able to move forward and stab faster than you can dodge, turn and run. Do a couple of drills with your friends and see if you can dodge, turn, and run when they bumrush you with a prison-style shank attack. If you can manage it, then you're a faster man than me and pretty much everyone I've ever trained with.

Your odds facing a knife will always be bad, but your death is not a foregone conclusion. I recently picked up the Die Less Often DVDs that phauna recommended, and I highly recommend that you check them out. You'll see some full-contact knife drills and yeah, lots of people get stabbed but a lot of people also manage to get out alive, using some pretty straight-forward principles and biomechanics.

I totally respect your point of view, but where's the harm in watching the techniques that are posted here and trying them out 50+ times before judging whether they work or not? Ultimately, I'm just out to find the most efficient way of maxing my percentages, or "dying less often" as the Dog Brothers would say.
