Trying to find a shanty-sounding song w/ an Eddie Vedder-ish voice that I heard on the radio yesterday. by c3bhmin seashanties

[–]NZShantyman 1 point2 points ago

Been thinking about your query and really don't like to hear a shanty query hanging...

I'm struggling to think of a shanty that would be played after Adele. Long shot, could be Irish Rover Ronnie Drew from the Dubliners and Shane MacGowan from the Pogues sing this and it could be either of them?

In terms of a shanty sounding song currently on the radio (assuming that you've had a look at the Mumford & Sons singles) you were probably listening to Fairytale of New York (skip to 1:25 to hear the rowdy bit.

Apart from that, you could conceivably been talking about Tommy Makem and the Clancy Brothers Haul Away Joe or...any shanty really. If I'm getting warm let me know

Sting did a few shanties, could be 'Blood Red Roses'?

You remember any words at all? I reckon I could track it down that way pretty easy

Job offer in Auckland - what's so awesome about your city? by MrChipin auckland

[–]NZShantyman 1 point2 points ago

As people have already said, 100k is heaps. You'll do really well here, depending on where you are living.

Weather is pretty good here, I don't imagine it would get colder than Canada. Can be crazy changeable though.

For me the best parts of Auckland are the West Coast beaches, really feels like the edge of the world out there.

Jafa is a term that probably means more to rural people than to anyone else, no one in Auckland gives a shit.

A couple of things you should know though:

1) The traffic is appalling, to best enjoy living here you are going to want to get a place close to work or at least close to good public transport. I can't stress this enough, it's balls out here.

2) Auckland city centre is...weird. There is no one central space where everything is, there are some cool centres (waterfront and k road) but you'd probably want to catch a bus to get between them. Shitty city planning, which doesn't ruin the experience if you expect it.

3) If you are into anything that's alternative (shows, bands etc) then you are going to find it hard to wander around into some bars and get surprised by a good show. You'll need to get plugged in to the local scene, once you do I'd say you'll enjoy it because the alternative music scene especially is really good. Posting here would probably be the best bet.

4) If you only stay in Auckland, you are kind of missing the point of New Zealand. You HAVE to go up North, and down to Queenstown. Auckland/Wellington are the best urban centres but the charm of the country is displayed by the scenery and the people in the smaller towns.

Tuvan is, sure. But Tuvalu is still a pacific island nation.

Allow me to illuminate the differences between the two climates:

You know what I like in my Tuvan throat singing performances? A guy in a turtle neck and pony tail doing a bass solo.

LPT: 4 tips on how not to come across as a dick. by NZShantymanin LifeProTips

Maybe I didn't explain that one so well, what I mean is that if you are respectful and friendly to someone intimidating then it shows them that they don't hold any social power over you and in my experience is the best way to piss them off. I totally agree if they continue to disrespect you and it's getting under your skin then you absolutely need to confront them. But pick a battle to confront them about where you are 100% in the right

Thanks so much for posting, although I do hate you with a jealous passion.

Just a couple of questions: 1939 seems insanely late in the piece for a tall ship to be built. Do you know if it was built solely as a training ship or was it ever used for merchant service

Thanks so much for the response, I did suspect as much. I have a few people over there already I could contact, might try that and see what comes up over the next few years

Really sorry if I came across this too late, I'm from NZ but am considering living in mainland Europe for a couple of years. I have a marketing degree and have good office experience as a low/mid level manager.

What would be the best place to start?

TIL that in 1996, Pinkerton (Weezer's second album) was voted as the year's third worst album by Rolling Stone readers. Six years later, the readers voted it as the 16th best album of all time by someguyfrommarsin todayilearned

Never heard of it, just read the wiki on it, seems daaaaaaaaaark

"The third act portrays Gallimard committing seppuku (also known as harakiri, ritual Japanese suicide through self-disembowelment) while Song watches and smokes a cigarette"

Gutted to read this, it took me a few years (because I was expecting another blue album) but Pinkerton is one of my favourite records especially once I read the story of Madame Butterfly.

And Weezer haven't done anything musically interesting since, I totally switched off after hearing Beverly hills...

Depends what you are looking for, if you like other retired people I'd go Tauranga. If you like sun I'd probably go to Nelson.

For a hippy/faux hippy lifestyle close to a big city, go for Waiheke Island.

For a 'fuck the world' I'm living in a tiny but idyllic country town with amazing people (and a small but persistent P problem) I'd go to the far north or the Hokianga.

PM me if you're serious, I'd be happy to help

I've been fuming ever since she said that to my wife and was seriously wondering about taking some official action against her.

Homeopaths vs. Chiropractors by perfectly_perfidiousin skeptic

[–]NZShantyman 5 points6 points ago

I replied above, but feel quite strongly about this as this is exactly what my chiropractor told me:

1) she got into chiropractic because her grandad's chiropractor stopped 100% of his clients from getting the Spanish flu.

2) Vitamin C therapy cures cancer

3) Chiropractic cured one of her patients of cancer

4) She never gets sick because of chiropractic

5) We should not immunise our newborn baby because it could turn him into a vegetable. The implication being that proper chiropractic therapy will stop the diseases being immunised against.
