TIL Steve Jobs shut down all philanthropic efforts at Apple when he returned to the company in 1997. by 996hurtin todayilearned

[–]NPPraxis 0 points1 point ago

No, it's really not. "I'm not educated enough to give examples" is your way of saying you have none to give. Apple rarely makes acquisitions.

Today my girlfriend told me that she would never have kids with a guy with tattoos because she doesn't want her kids born with the tattoos of the father, as if they were passed genetically. But the endogenous portion is effected by the type of food you eat too. Eating eggs daily (up from once a week) while completely eliminating sugar drastically dropped my cholesterol. Numbers have never been better.

Kill sugar with fire, don't even worry about cholesterol intake, IMO.

Agreed. My only statement was that doctors telling patients to avoid eggs for cholesterol is just as much false as doctors telling patients to turn off fans.

I started eating eggs and/or red meat daily and eliminated all sugar from my diet and my cholesterol numbers have become amazing. My doctor actually opened his mouth to object, looked at my numbers, and said, "well, okay, it's working."

Considering debt and a net worth perspective, I think you could say a lot of people have more money than the US government.

What are you talking about? Your only example is Siri, which Apple bought, paid for, and marketed using its original name.

Who did Apple rip the iPhone off of? The iMac? The iPad? How are "most of" the things Apple is famous for bought or stolen? You're just being silly.

Not to mention axing a ton of overpaid executives.

Jobs eliminated everything that wasn't bringing in revenue or was doing it inefficiently; they were going bankrupt otherwise.

You really have to consider the context on this. When Steve Jobs returned to the company in 97 it was literally months from bankruptcy. Jobs made a huge fat-trimming and started firing overpaid executives and shutting down worthless divisions left and right. Shutting down philanthropy makes perfect sense in this context- it was wasted money if they were going to go bankrupt.

Why he never reinstated them a decade down the line would be a decent question. But there's no doubt that at the time this was a logical decision, not a heartless one. They weren't rich, they were practically bankrupt.

To be fair, margarine is generally terrible for you and butter is much healthier.

I've actually heard the "one molecule from plastic" thing and actually made the same response about peroxide and water! However, she just looked at me funny and said, "but still, it can't be good for them to be so close, right?"

Worse yet, milk is loaded with sugar (lactose) and sugar makes you fat (beyond just calories; it causes an insulin reaction to make your body store to lower blood sugar, in turn prompting you to eat more).

She was probably gaining weight because of the drink. Drink water, kids.

Doctors perpetuate myths that they are told in medical school in every country; patients just have no ability to tell.

In America, doctors will tell you that eating eggs every day will raise your cholesterol. It won't. Dietary cholesterol has no correlation with blood cholesterol, the body produces most of it. Doctors and nutritionists will still tell you to avoid eggs if your cholesterol is high.

I get that too, and then I start thinking I see a ceiling fan off to the side in my peripheral vision. I appreciate the warning, I can usually get home to a dark room in time.

Wind was the first store I found. IIRC, it was $9 a month for unlimited data with contract and $20 without contract.

Can't really speak to 3G call quality yet (only call I made was to someone in the SF Bay area who ALWAYS has poor quality calls) but texting works fantastically and the maps have been invaluable.

I've met fat vegetarians.

A lot of vegetarians are skinny because they're eating lots of vegetables, reducing caloric intake, and eating low glycemic index carbs.

I've seen fat vegetarians that eat lots of white bread and crap.

Thanks! I'm semi-retired at this point, but I was considered the top Brawl Peach player in the U.S. at a time. She's an extremely fun character to play, but so limited in Brawl compared to Melee...just doesn't have the power to solidly punish mistakes.

I'd encourage you to look up your local tournament scene if you have time :)

Despite being semi-retired, I'm planning to attend an event in France this weekend. I love this game's community.

Check out your region's subsection on Smasboards.com. People organize meet ups for practice and there are listings for tournaments for the region...most regions do something big monthly.

Usually tournaments involve an entry fee with the winner walking away with ~60-70% of the pot (2nd and 3rd place also getting cash).

Once or twice a year there'll be a big tournament that Japan and Europe players fly down to. Last year it was Genesis 2 and Apex 2011.

I'm a Brawl player, so I'm not gonna be taking down Isai anytime soon :) And keep in mind that Brawl is considered generally the least "watchable" of the three Smash games- it's the least technical and most defensive (when's the last time non-chess-players enjoyed watching a chess match?). But here's a few (all in tournament or for money except the last):

Me vs Nick Riddle (best Zero Suit Samus)

Me vs Trela (Lucario)

Me vs Hylian (Game & Watch)

Me vs Wolt (Ike, local newer player, I'm kind of a jerk)
