Newt Gingrich $4 Million in Debt; Staffers and Creditors Fume by IsleCookin politics

[–]NMSpaz 0 points1 point ago

Seems like a dangerous thing to allow campaigns to take on debt in the first place. A business can't donate large sums of money to a candidate because of campaign finance laws, but it can agree to do a million dollars of work on behalf of a candidate on credit that never gets paid back? Seems like a giant loophole.

New monorail expansion proposal to connect Ballard with West Seattle by tandm13in Seattle

[–]NMSpaz 1 point2 points ago

The sydney monorail is stupid not because it's a monorail, but because it doesn't go anywhere. http://www.humantransit.org/2012/01/sydney-transit-toy-soon-to-be-scrap-metal.html

Now, that said, I'm not advocating a monorail for Seattle. Even if it were technically superior to other options (which, frankly, I have no idea), it's simply not politically feasible in the wake of the failed SMP. But don't knock a whole transmit mode for being useless just because one example of it is.

Hah, true enough. (Or, heaven forbid, you could just abstain in such situations!)

But you're talking specifically about the "consequences of being lied to", so the "trap" is assumed. I'm not saying the choice is pleasant, but it sure beats not having one.

At any rate, I'm all for both partners having the ability to protect themselves, then whether or not their partner is lying is moot. Right now men don't really have this option.

[–]NMSpaz 5 points6 points ago

What? if the woman is lied to, she can choose to get an abortion. That sucks, but at least she has the choice. If the man is lied to, he's at her mercy as to whether or not he's stuck paying child support for a child he may not want (and since the given here is that she lied, Good Luck to him). He has no choice.

There was also a pictures-with-santa (for adults, as far as I saw) next to gate.

First off, I don't know the answer for sure, and I'm only a student myself, so take anything what I say with a grain of salt and ask at your DZ, that said—

I think it depends on the DZ. The USPA requires students to have jumped within 30 days to be considered current. Even once you do get licensed, you need to jump occasionally to maintain currency (60 days for an A-license, 90 for B, 120 for C and 6 months for D— see http://www.skydivecolumbus.com/uspa_sims_section_425.htm ). That said, if you aren't current, it just means to you need to jump with someone appropriately certified and demonstrate your skills to them. It doesn't mean you have to start from zero.

During the AFF course, you're already jumping with at least one such person on every jump anyway, so as far as I can tell you're already covered from the USPA's perspective (I think that's why the link above is silent on AFF students who haven't graduated AFF yet). That said, just because the USPA may allow it (as I read it) doesn't mean that your DZO is going to just let someone in their plane who has 3 jumps from 5 years ago and nothing since.

In practice what I expect you'll find is that as long as your last jump was within 30 days, you'll be fine. If you take over 30 days but less than, I dunno, 4-6 months or something then you might or might not have to repeat an AFF level. If it's been a year or more, it wouldn't surprise me if they make you start over, or at least take the First Jump Course classroom parts over again. I had some friends that waited 2-3 months between jumps and they were allowed to go without any special consideration, and I presume that's typical, but I don't know for sure. Ask your DZO!

Also, regardless of how long it's been, those old jumps will still count toward your 25 you need to get licensed, even if your DZ wants you to start over in the classroom, so keep those old logbooks.

Finally, everything I've said is assuming you're in the US and jumping at a USPA-affiliated DZ. If you're outside the US then I have no idea what the rules are, but they are likely to be similar.

I said "you're out an extra $50-75". What I meant was that the cost over and above the cost of a tandem jump.

At my DZ, a tandem jump is $215, and AFF1 is $275. So if you did one jump and decided not to do any more, you'd be out $60 compared to just doing the tandem. Later AFF jumps are generally cheaper. At my DZ AFF2-3 are $175 each and 4-7 are $150 each, then further solo student jumps are $65 each until you get your A-license at 25 jumps. If you did the tandem and decided to continue, it'd cost you an extra $215 for the tandem, possibly minus $65 for needing one less student jump if the tandem counts as one of your 25 (which I have my doubts about— ask at your DZ).
