Magnolia doesn't look that bicycle friendly . . . is it? by skippyGin Seattle

[–]MuNansen 2 points3 points ago

lol. Thought this said "Mongolia doesn't..." Then saw the map and was like "I don't remember Mongolia having this grid street pattern, or being so green."

TIL "badass" originally meant "bad donkey", and was used by whites to refer to a black person who refused to "know their place". by wsituin todayilearned

"Black person that refuses to know their place" sounds an awful lot like a compliment to me. Now I like the term even more.

A million is only "very small" if you're Blizzard or Valve, especially on PC.

What is the best Spielberg movie? by karsonkillerin movies

[–]MuNansen 3 points4 points ago

Impossible to pick. He's my hero. Some oddities, though:

  • For me, Private Ryan > Schindler. I'm not Jewish, but I am from a long line of men that have served voluntarily in the American armed forces before coming home to make "real" lives. So Ryan was much more personal for me. Schindler is undeniably a greater artistic work, though.

  • Temple of Doom is criminally under-rated for me. Yeah it's different, and a bit silly, but that's fine for me. I think it's actually closer to what they wanted for Raiders but it ended up being much more serious, probably thanks to the Nazis. It's still my least favorite of the good 3 Indys, but I still love it. I think most people dislike it for what it is, not for how well it achieved it.

  • I actually enjoy Encounters more than E.T. Like Ryan, it just hits closer to home for me. Though the last five minutes of E.T. still cuts some intense onions. Possibly more than any other Spielberg movie.

  • I enjoyed Lost World. Like with Temple, I don't mind when Spielberg gets a little silly.

  • Munich really didn't do much for me.

  • Hook might hit the kid in me harder than any of his other films. Yeah it's one of his "lightest" movies, but damn did he ever nail it.

Where did I say "monetarily successful"? Or is that more words you're putting in my mouth?

Don't have time to write ten pages. Am at work. Making games. Do searches for opinions/essays written by people that have shipped successful games, and you'll get all you need.

Yeah, bad ideas do tend to be contentious. And I didn't see anything in the article that I'd call "meaningful" when it comes to game development. Just stuff that's popular with the indie crowd that have no intention of actually shipping games.

Those kind of assumptions, and the conclusions you've put into my mouth, are exactly the kind of thing an aspiring game developer should avoid, so I posted to try to warn against giving them any weight. That players' inputs/decisions should matter is not up for debate. What remains is discussion of how that can be achieved.

Everything's gotta be "new," "interesting," and "innovative." "Outside the box." "Make decisions matter."

All stuff people that have never made a successful game before like to say. Telling people what games they should be making is for the professional opinion-havers. Professional game makers make whatever games they wanna make. The superlatives are added later by the marketing department.

Author's more concerned with indie scene buzzwords than how to actually make a good game. Would not recommend.

The part I thought was really brilliant:

"Dad. What's that stuff you're covered in?" As Tom looks into the mirror. I forget the exact line, but the realization that it's ashes left from people was very well done.

How broke, financially, have you ever been? Do you have any life lessons from that period in your life? by ether-i-amin AskReddit

[–]MuNansen 2 points3 points ago

$10k+ in debt and not enough money to eat AND pay the bills. Several days no eating (not in a row). Now I make good money and have worked on several of the biggest games of the last 5 years.

  • You don't need to eat as much as you think. It's become habit for so many of us to eat so much.

  • "At least I have my health" really is the most important thing.

  • The universe does not owe you the life that MTV and your public school teachers say everyone deserves.

  • "Risk vs. Reward" is a very important concept to learn in the school of life. The graduate school version is "Risk = Reward."

  • I don't waste money, calories, or time on garbage food, other than a few guilty pleasures. I'll just go hungry rather than eat something that no one put any love and effort into. I don't own very many gadgets or showy items, but my monthly dining/drinking bills are a little high, and I don't regret it in the least.

  • The fervor of confidence in their own expertise of critics is almost always inversely proportional to the amount of effort and risk put forth by the critic in their own lives to put their own works forth. I find that the more someone understands what it takes to truly succeed in a creative medium, the more easily they find value in the work, heart, and truth put forth by others.

That's all that comes to mind for now.

Keeping with "everyone's a critic" tradition, it'd probably be the ending, which everyone thinks was Spielberg's idea but in truth was the part Spielberg didn't really think was necessary but he kept it anyway because it was in Kubrick's original vision. I even remember seeing the storyboards of it before Spielberg took it on.

Same with War of the Worlds. The ending of War of the Worlds is really stupid in today's world and understanding of technology. Spielberg stayed true to the original, though, rather than make up something new and better.

Although I will admit the second half of WotW wasn't very effective. The first half was pretty amazing, though, I thought.

TIL Belgian man in coma for 23 years was actually awake. by Miargusin todayilearned

[–]MuNansen 0 points1 point ago

Well, Amazing Stories was in the 80s, so maybe the one I'm thinking of is a remake of that older one. This one happened in the jungle, and the person that realize he was alive was a doctor that he had just had de-licensed, so it ends on a "oh crap!" note.
