Was classical BASIC ever used for commercial software development? by Rachel53461in programming

[–]MrSurly 2 points3 points ago

Yes, absolutely. First thing that comes to mind is Sword of Fargoal for the Commodore 64. It was almost all BASIC except for a few ML routines.

Space Elevator Planned By 2050 In Japan by nibble4bitsin scifi

When I was a kid ('70s), we were supposed to have by 2010:

  • Flying cars
  • Orbital habitats
  • Space elevator

All we got was the crappy communicators from Star Trek.

Because explosive mixture components are the only thing that could be in a bottle. Nothing else dangerous could possibly be in there. Ever.

It could easily be some sort of nasty biological agent. Point is, they just throw it in the trash. If they really considered that stuff to be dangerous, then then bomb disposal and/or hazmat crew should be very busy nearly all the time.

Isn't that kind of like saying "My hand has 3 fingers"? Wouldn't it equally apply to color as well as existence?

Having a Facebook account would've been convenient in the situation you describe. Not having one kept them from contacting you.

This implies that one should be contactable.

JavaScript: The good parts by sheldonpooperin programming

Results in the string "12", as it should. I know I'll get hate for this, but Perl does type coercion correctly. Instead of strongly typed variables, it has strongly typed operators. A '+' always does numeric addition, and a '.' always does string concatenation*. Most of the time, the resulting type isn't important. That can be argued as both a strength or a weakness.

* Unless you overload them, but that's an entirely different bucket of worms.

Me: It doesn't spawn enough processes

Co-worker: Why don't you higher the limit?

Me: Huh?

Co-worker: Higher the limit.

Me: I heard you, what does that mean?

Co-worker: Make it higher. You know: more.

Me: Do you mean "raise" the limit?

Co-worker: I guess.

Me: The fuck?

Co-worker: You know: "lower the limit," and "higher the limit", right?

Me: No. Who says that?

Co-worker: Makes sense

Me: I guess, but nobody says that.

That would be Novell, who seem unlikely to take any action:

On January 13, 2004, Novell announced that it was indemnifying Linux users—agreeing to protect them from lawsuits by third parties, like SCO, on the basis of violating the copyrights claimed by Novell. The same day, Novell released the letters that SCO and Novell had exchanged in the previous months. SCO immediately responded with a press release reiterating its earlier claim, and announcing that it was preparing to file a lawsuit against Novell.

...

The jury trial on the remanded copyright issues began on March 8, 2010 before Judge Ted Stewart. It was expected to last three weeks.[19] On March 30, the jury returned a unanimous verdict in favor of Novell.[20][21] On June 10, Judge Stewart ruled in favor of Novell on all issues, closing the case.
