Competitive jackasses who think that if they downvote you then they stand a better chance of getting the work even though it'll come down to cost/skills and not magic internet points.

Still, I brought you back up.

38 Studios lays off entire staff. Big Huge Games staff gone as well. by Tumblerin Games

I remember before Star Wars the Old Republic released hearing things about it's budget. I've heard estimates of anywhere from 80 to 200 million dollars.

And the first thing that popped into my head was, "Jesus, how many copies would they need to sell just to even break even!?"

Monthly fees notwithstanding, I think the problem with the budget/sales issue is knowing when to cut and run and when to just finish. When a project gets bloated it's difficult to say, "Well we can't possibly sell enough games so let's just say 'fuck it' and shut it all down". If you do that, then you've wasted all your money. There was probably a point in ToR where someone realized that they'd need 3 million (or whatever) subscribers to make a profit...but if they cut the project then they'd make nothing; not even a chance of making something.

I think the methodology that leads many games to ruin is:

  • The game is looking great!

  • Well, the game is still looking great but we need an extension!

  • OK, the game isn't looking so great but we can fix it with more time

  • All right, we just need a little bit more time and money to put out some fires

  • We're so close but the project has cost so much now that we could never make our money back

So the question is, at what point would you can the project? At what point would you give the project more money? And at what point would you just release it unfinished?

Almost every company has a different opinion and what to do and when. Sadly it seems the best choices are often made by companies like valve who have so much money coming in from other sources that they don't have to worry about budgets. 99% of studios don't have alternative income sources though.

A friend of mine once said about military service in general:

There's an old saying that 'We do more before 6am than most people do in a day'. Which is true. Except that then you usually have most of an entire day with fuck all to do. So yeah, you get into some shit.

This was shortly after a story about them catching an octopus and putting it in a shower.

Oh yes that's a drastic difference, not too far off of Seattle even. In the first photo the air and clouds could be attributed to the weather and thr jets but the water just looked horribly brown and yellow in that shot. Having never been to NY and having only heard that the water was bad its hard to know for sure. Thanks!

At my old apartment complex they wanted to fit in another spot for "reserved" (paid) parking.

So they painted over all the lines and repainted them about 1-2 feet closer together, then added the extra spot at the end.

It was comically bad, especially because it was imperceptible to the human eye. And they weren't marked compact. For reference I have an '02 Honda Accord, which is a mid-sized sedan. Not small but definitely not huge. If I got all my tires inside the lines my mirrors would still be poking out over the line by an inch or two.

And yes, there's an old simpson's bit that uses exactly this setup. I'd post it but its impossible to find clips of the show on youtube.

Yeah Redmond is funny like that.

There's an abundance of parking generally, it being a relatively modern and affluent city. But there is not an abundance of large spots, especially for the average size of the vehicles.

I get by just fine with my honda, it's jags like this that make it sucky.

Still better than having to pay for parking or look for a spot in my opinion though.

As a Seattlite I just have to ask:

The air and the water...are they always that filthy? Or is it just a trick of the light/weather/camera?

Now, obviously the jets have a lot of smoke and exhaust that wouldn't normally be there which is why I'm asking. But for reference here's what the blue angles shows in the Seattle area during the summer look like

People generally just use the term "indie" now to mean "small game".

It's not exactly accurate of course but...eh, that's just what people are calling it these days.

Well like I said, there are good episodes in 9-10+. And by good I mean "on par" with the previous seasons (so "excellent" is actually a better term, or "classic").

But the seasons are no longer 100% there. That's where I mark the decline because from a writing standpoint it seemed like they were just using old scripts/ideas they had around but the new stuff they were writing was no longer up to snuff.

On a purely opinion note, I would contest many of the episodes you listed as being awesome. But I don't want to pit opinion vs. opinion.

I loved the jab in Arrested Development about that:

It's probably some geek simpson's-writer's kid.

I'm sure there are writers for the simpsons that are not geeks!

Honestly I'm inclined to agree with you. Also they had writers like Conan O'Brien and plenty of other people who were just as awesome in those days (idk the % of Harvard grads).

Also I spent 40 years as a night watchman at a cranberry silo.

How about letting people know that they can sort the comments (questions) by either "top" or "new"?

'New' being optimal if they're trying to answer questions in the order they were received, 'top' being optimal if they're trying to answer the most popular questions.

It would also be a good idea to use that as a point to explain how comment upvotes work. I.e. if the comment has 68 points next to it then at least 68 people liked the question and would probably appreciate a response.

Having show reddit to non-redditors I think how the page of comments is sorted is usually the biggest hurdle. Might not be a bad idea to have a blurb explaining how the comment trees work. Also you might mention that [-] can collapse the comment trees, which is a good way to help navigate a thread.

Yeah I usually call the series "over" at season 9.

That's not saying there aren't good episodes in 9 & 10, but that's the point where you can no longer pick a random episode and have it be awesome 100% of the time. Over 9, 10, and 11 it goes down pretty linearly.

Probably because they went with broad social statements rather than incredibly specific topical humor.

I didn't watch it but something tells me the new episode with Lady Gaga just won't have the staying power.

I liked that too.

I say liked as in past tense because I don't feel like the show works that way anymore :(

I remember having a similar problem with sayonara zetsubou sensei (though not exactly the same). 90% of the funny stuff in the show was tiny scribbles on the walls and stuff...you basically needed to watch it with your hand on the pause button so you could catch it all. It was neat but frustrating overall.

I also watch anime while sitting on my couch (HDMI to the TV). So that sort of "I need to pause it to catch up" sort of interaction doesn't work for me anymore. Which is a shame because the show seemed neat.

I loved the way the show looked.

My issue? I couldn't read that fast :(

The faster paced dialog combined with me trying to look at everything just made for a frustrating experience overall and I had to stop watching. It really upset me that my brain wasn't fast enough for me to enjoy the show...but it just isn't I guess.
