Buddhist Views on Homosexuality? by ZombyDynoin Buddhism

[–]MrBoji 0 points1 point ago

I don't think people willingly choose to suffer--as the 2nd Noble Truth suggests, this choice is due to a lack of understanding. If it'd be a genuine choice, then people would have an understanding of the path of suffering, and the path of happiness, but would willingly choose the path of suffering.

In the strictest sense, this is true, since desire is a mental formation, but not all mental formations will create suffering. A mental formation, if it relates to manas (ego), will create suffering, but if it relates to store consciousness, will touch the reality of things-in-themselves. In other words, if you have a desire to eat chips and soft drinks, this will cause you suffering, but this type of desire is very different from the desire to end suffering in the world. Both are desires, but one is unwholesome whereas the second is wholesome.

Yoga and Sex connection? Don't be surprised... by spinelssinvrtebratein yoga

Well, having practiced yoga for more than 10 years now, I can say that it's provided more than a mental and physical exercise, but as with everything, your results may vary.

Yoga and Sex connection? Don't be surprised... by spinelssinvrtebratein yoga

The yoga ethics that I referenced were not written by Judith Lasater, but rather a committee of various yoga teachers interested in upholding certain ethical standards which are laid out in this document. Judith Lasater's name comes up as I believe she headed the movement for this, and is fairly well known in the yoga community. Yoga teachers are not legally bound by this document, but are asked to observe it for their sake and their students.

Perhaps my message wasn't as clear as it ought have been, so I'd like to clarify something: yoga teachers are not trained as psychologists, and are not meant to assist in working out the emotions that may arise in a yoga sessions. There are trained, specialized people for this. If one understands the body/mind connection well, some people experience emotional releases when doing certain postures, and it may just be really confusing for people at first. A yoga teacher can explain this body/mind connection to students, which is something that rarely happens with a personal trainer.

If yoga teachers were akin to a personal trainer or spin class instructor, then no, I wouldn't be upset, provided that the relationship would involve mutually consenting adults. Yoga teachers, however, are more than fitness instructors, and that's where the line starts to get blurry.

It's not "lawful" in a legal way, but it is in an ethical way. Teachers, whether they're high school teachers or yoga teachers, are bound by a professional ethic by which they are encouraged to abide. In yoga teacher training courses, students are given this code of ethics, headed by Judith Lasater, which clearly outlines student/teacher relationships: http://www.rickross.com/reference/3ho/3ho52.html

I hold yoga teachers in the same light as any school teacher, but you may choose to see it differently, and that's fine. The reason why I hold them in the same light is because yoga is more than just physical exercise--many times it opens up a can of worms emotionally and yoga teachers are asked to assist the person in processing those emotions whenever they arise. A personal trainer doesn't usually have this responsibility.

Please reread my post; even though yoga students aren't children, there's a professional ethic that is imposed within the relationship. Don't believe me? Judith Lasater pioneered a code of ethics because, like the article mentioned, there was too much abuse of power in yoga classes:

It's unacceptable for a psychologist to have relations with a patient because it breaks the doctor/patient bond. In the same way, it's equally unacceptable for a yoga teacher to have relations with a student because it breaks the teacher/student relationship. Both psychologist and teacher are in a position of power, and some may use this power to negative ends.

A Buddhist story regarding alcohol - a story I've found most helpful in understanding the prohibition of intoxicants by unheedingin Buddhism

[–]MrBoji 2 points3 points ago

This story points to the fact that consuming alcohol removes us from our capacity to stay in the present moment, and is a good reminder for us all.

Furthermore, it's also globally unsustainable; the large amount of grain used to produce alcohol could instead be used to feed the 6 billion people on this earth.
