Ghosthunters has been on the air since 2004. How long would you keep watching a show called "Moosehunters", if they never saw or heard a single fucking Moose? by massivecoilerin AskReddit

[–]MercurialMithras 0 points1 point ago

They're seeing the commercials and assuming the whole show is like that. This is exactly the type of material they put in commercials for this: "OMG, what was that?" "We're getting record high readings in here!" quick jerky camera movement, smash cut to title

Sure, the actual show might just say "We record this sound that's interesting", but the implication when that's put on the air is "This is an unexplained phenomena, and therefore is possibly a ghost". The rational explanation is not put forward so blatantly as it should be most of the time. the "Fact or Faked" show is much better in that regard, but it has other problems.

Until the day one of these shows conclusively proves the existence of ghosts, it's a waste of time. They don't exist, and most of the reddit population is not of the mind to believe in the supernatural, so of course it's unpopular here. Then you've got people like myself who hate it because it's eating up blocks of time and money on the Syfy channel that could be used to produce, you know, actual science fiction programming. If they want to be the ghost hunter network, they need to be the ghost hunter network and stop with all the pretenses. I'm pretty sure that trekkies and ghost believers have almost no overlap, so they need to pick a side.

Just finished watching ENT "Twilight" from Season 3. IMHO a great piece of sci-fi writing. by MaGoGoin startrek

They were destroying a parasite that lived outside of time, and by destroying it at any one point eliminated it at all points in time. It's basically the same mechanism used in Voyager's Year of Hell. That's not to say that this is a bad episode (or that one, for that matter), but it's not exactly a novel approach.

Alright Reddit! What are some of the biggest movie plot holes that you know of? by DrToonzin AskReddit

[–]MercurialMithras 0 points1 point ago

Oh, I see what you're talking about. That is something that's not really addressed in the film, but it might be mentioned in the "countdown" comic books, which were considered a canon prequel to the film (though they aren't now). I haven't read them, but I hear they patch up some of these issues which couldn't fit into the film.

Personally, I think there was something else going on. If the star were going supernova naturally, the signs would likely be visible in Kirk's era, and everyone would be able to tell and have ~150 years to do something about it. Hell, Nero could go to the Romulan Empire and tell them about it in advance and give them that time to prepare, which is a problem all its own. But when you take that fact into account, it seems like the only explanation for the star's supernova to catch everyone by surprise would be if someone had done it on purpose. Why they would want to do that, I have no idea, but I bet it would be an interesting story...

Star Trek: Cardinal Being Pitched To CBS Tomorrow! by Bovice1in television

[–]MercurialMithras 5 points6 points ago

Pitch reminds me vaguely of Battlestar Galactica (Old ship in mothballs brought out, a captain whose heyday was much earlier) so I'm not sure how I feel about that. Making the ship too "special" seems like it could be a misstep as well. We'll have to wait and see, I guess.

Alright Reddit! What are some of the biggest movie plot holes that you know of? by DrToonzin AskReddit

[–]MercurialMithras 0 points1 point ago

The answer to that is that the red matter was the only substance capable of putting a stop to the supernova, and the only group with access to red matter was the Vulcan science council. So yeah, they were kind of reliant on Spock to do something about it. They were supposedly unable to evacuate most of the population because of how unexpectedly fast the shockwave was traveling. Again, the shockwave traveling faster than the speed of light doesn't really make sense unless there's some kind of foul play involved, but since we left that universe behind, there's no real way left to explore that.

There are plenty of holes in the movie, I just don't think this is one of them.

Alright Reddit! What are some of the biggest movie plot holes that you know of? by DrToonzin AskReddit

[–]MercurialMithras 3 points4 points ago

That's why the Romulans were so pissed. The Vulcans had the means to help stop the supernova, but politics prevented anyone from doing anything about it. Spock took it into his own hands, but he was too late to save Romulus. Nero thinks Spock showed up late on purpose, so that the Romulans would be annihilated and one of the Federation's biggest enemies/rivals would be out of the picture. During Nero's attack on Spock's ship, they accidentally create a black hole which sends both of them back in time, albeit to different points.

There are other problems with this (The supernova's explosive debris is apparently traveling faster than light, which shouldn't be possible, obviously black holes aren't going to make you travel backwards in time, etc.) but that's how it occurs in the film's backstory.

Idiots are where the money is. If you don't appeal to them, you're going to have a much smaller audience and, in all likelihood, be far less profitable. The obnoxious 15 year old with his mommy's credit card is way more likely to buy premium cash items than a broke 20-something who wants an intelligent and courteous experience.

Sure, it's great... Until you get to Kanji. Then all logic is thrown out the window. Multiple characters with essentially the same meaning and the same reading, characters with the same reading and different (sometimes even opposite) meanings, characters that are only used in one or two words. It can be a nightmare to learn.

A "MacGuffin" is just a story telling term for the object that motivates the plot. The Holy Grail in Indiana Jones, for example. It's not specifically something unknown, it could be anything, so long as it motivates the characters into action to obtain it.

(Sorry, had to nitpick that.)

Where can River Song go from here? by urutapuin gallifrey

[–]MercurialMithras 3 points4 points ago

I don't think it has to be that lame. After all, they can send River off in her final episode with the Doctor giving her 10's Sonic Screwdriver, and then we all know what's going to happen next. Depending on how such a scene is handled, it could be pretty powerful. You're right in general, though; her character arc is essentially completed, and any appearances from here on out will likely be neutral at best and detrimental at worst.

They have several interesting projects in development still. Defender (by DS9 vet and Andromeda's first head writer Robert Hewitt Wolfe) and High Moon (by Bryan Fuller, creator of Pushing Daisies and who also wrote some DS9 and Voyager) both sound great. I hope they get developed. Defender sounds like it could be a spiritual successor to Andromeda's first seasons, before Wolfe had to leave. It would be interesting to see his ideas come to fruition this time.

The Memo That Never Was To Be Seen (ST:TNG casting) by sadz79in scifi

[–]MercurialMithras 5 points6 points ago

Retcon is when they retroactively change previous events to be more in line with the new narrative. In this example, originally the character in Generations was not Tuvok, as that character did not yet exist, but once Tim Russ was cast for that part, it made sense to consolidate these two characters with similar pasts into just one.

I don't know if that's true or not. I suspect it isn't, because Tim Russ is not wearing vulcan ears in that movie. I'd like to personally believe it, and I think there's a fan film which he stars in that takes that approach, but I doubt it's canon.

I don't even know my emotions on this. Offended, possibly? by PurpleHadoukensin geek

[–]MercurialMithras 0 points1 point ago

I've been really mad at them since the cancellation of SGU, but they do have several new shows coming up that sound good. I'm personally looking forward to Defender, as Robert Hewitt Wolfe has worked on some great stuff in the past. High Moon also seems good, and Bryan Fuller is magnificent. Defiance could also be interesting, but I'm more skeptical of that.

Adult Swim just announced that Toonami is returning May 26, 2012. What shows do you think they should air? by billybobskcorin AskReddit

[–]MercurialMithras 1 point2 points ago

I'm glad I'm not the only one. Some old stuff would be fine, at least to get the block started again, but they need new series in order to succeed. They'll practically have a monopoly on anime anyway, may as well get top picks before someone else tries to copy it.
