Can someone help me identify this rotating pan? by SupremeGunmanin Archaeology

[–]MarsupialBob 0 points1 point ago

It's some variation of a spider.

It is either badly repaired, or it is modern. From the picture, the pan is MIG welded to the handle, it categorically is not riveted or hand-welded. The handle itself appears to be wrought, but not by a particularly skilled maker; the creasing where the metal is 'pinched' just in front of the legs should not occur under a skilled smith. The three large decorative bulges would be extremely atypical for an 18th/19th century original, though they do appear to have been made properly by a smith and not added with a modern welder.

A couple guesses:

1) It's a modern example by a moderately skilled blacksmith, but not one particularly concerned with historical accuracy.

2) It's an antique original with an extremely unusual design, but the pan has been replaced by an amateur hack with a MIG welder.

3) The handle is a cannibalized piece (the front upright) of a wrought andiron, cut off with the ends reworked. If this is the case, the hack who did it should be beaten with the other andiron for fucking it up.

I would lean towards option one. Modern welding on the pan end, and handle looks to be made of a standard 1/2 or 5/8 (hard to judge scale) square stock. The only thing that keeps me from being absolutely sure is the odd 'inlay' on the top of the handle. I'm not entirely sure what that is, but - unfortunately - it makes me think option 3 may be in with a chance.

Option two is extremely unlikely. I would work on the assumption that it's modern. Latter half of the 20th century to present day. Hope you haven't paid much.

Edit: close-up photos of each of the 3 decorative 'bulges', the top and bottom where the legs join, and the weld where the handle joins the pan might help. Width/depth dimensions of the handle stock (1/2" square? 3/4" square?) would actually be very helpful as well.

Edit2: And the others are correct; this is more antiques and less archaeology. Spiders don't tend to show up in excavations, excluding the arachnid variety.

I'm reading ancient Greek myths to my kid, but I can't pronounce the names! Help! by therationalparentin history

[–]MarsupialBob 0 points1 point ago

Or just pronounce every vowel as 'ee' and you'll be pretty accurate for Modern Greek. Some point in the last couple thousand years eta, upsilon, iota, and some of the diphthongs all ended up with the same pronunciation.

Which usually makes it great fun watching someone fluent in Ancient Greek try to speak to someone fluent in Greek today.

Depending on what the staining is from and what the mug is made out of, repeated hydrogen peroxide poultices might cure that.

I know people who have been pepper sprayed, and one person who has been tazed (frankly, he deserved it; he was drunk as fuck and threw a punch at a cop). I don't know anyone first-hand who has been shot by an officer.

[–]MarsupialBob 2 points3 points ago

They are all carrying pepperspray, tazer, and a handgun. How far you can go before any given one is used on you depends on how much of a dick the cop is, how public the venue is, and what color your skin is.

Usually any sort of physical resistance (even passive resistance like refusing to move) will get you peppersprayed or tazed. Assaulting an officer will definitely get you tazed, possibly shot. Assaulting an officer with a weapon (crowbar, baseball bat, etc) will get you shot.

Obviously not always true, but good general guidelines.

I dunno, seems like that would get you pretty quick. Or at least it would drive you into unconsciousness pretty quick.

Plus, instead of being cremated, you could just be hit with a sledgehammer and have your fragments scattered.

Salty sgraffito (and other saltglazed pieces) by MarsupialBobin Pottery

[–]MarsupialBob[S] 0 points1 point ago

http://imgur.com/a/jVGeO#7mDeO is my take from the kiln. Mostly 18th century English Brown tankards, a few small Bellarmine jugs, some 16th century Rhenish bottles in the back left.

http://imgur.com/a/jVGeO#1kW5E is for me since my previous teapot died a horrible, screaming death recently. It's a bit of a chimera. The handle and body are based on a late 18th century English teapot, the neck is off of a 18th century Devonshire harvest jug, the spout w/ connecter and punctated appliqué came from a Medieval jug from somewhere in Lincolnshire, and I'm not 100% sure where the stamped appliqué roundels are from. I think that head is off of a Roman coin, but I don't quite remember. The lid is a heavily modified version of one from a 18th century Moravian jar.

http://imgur.com/a/jVGeO#WP3MI the forms are based on 16th century Rhenish bottles, but tweaked to make them look better as long-neck pitchers. Sgraffito designs are all from medieval English tiles.

http://imgur.com/a/jVGeO#Qb1R3 the form is a copy of a late 18th century French pitcher by Alexander Douché, but decorated in cobalt blue slip with a design based on a 17th century Dutch mug.

http://imgur.com/a/jVGeO#0PMOe isn't really based on anything except the vaguest notion of a 17th century Borderware pitcher. Mostly I was just bored at the time.

Kiln reduced a little more than I would like, and my cobalt slip needs a tiny bit more feldspar so it'll take salt better. Finally have the color and the shrinkage right on it though.

I didn't put enough transparent glaze over my piece. If I put more on and then put it back in the kiln, will the design melt/warp? by cheddarzin Pottery

[–]MarsupialBob 1 point2 points ago

I'm guessing it's cone 04 from googling it; something like 150-200 degree difference between a 4 and an 04. Seems to be 04 underglaze, then a 06 clear recommended on their website.

I know slips much better than underglazes, but I think you're probably okay adding a tiny bit more glaze. Can't guarantee it, but that would be my bet.

Also, fair warning, it's an absolute bitch to get additional glaze to stick on an already vitrified glaze.

To all redditors in the medical field: What is one thing you wish more patients knew? by Sharkbait_ooh_ah_ahin AskReddit

[–]MarsupialBob 18 points19 points ago*

The ambulance service in my area is a privately-owned monopoly covering a 15 county area. There's $900 base charge plus a mileage rate charged to and from the hospital. The nearest hospital is approximately 40 miles away.

The highest bill I am personally aware of is approximately $2200, so yes, $3000 may well be an exaggeration. That may include some treatment administered - I'm honestly not sure - but I would consider that part-and-parcel with the ride itself. I would, as a result, argue the point of the $3000 figure being a gross exaggeration.

And frankly, would it be any less appalling if I said $2000? Or $1000? Hell, if you have a heart attack a block away from a hospital in the heart of a city it's still going to cost you $500 or so.

Edit: And 5 minutes of google later, I'm far and away not under the worst provider. Here are rates for San Luis Obispo County: Minimum base rate at $1,947, critical care minimum base rate at $2,466.33.

Same place two years earlier; the base rate was $70 lower and they're still citing a $2,855 bill for someone. Medi-Cal/MediCare combo only pays about $700 out of that, so even if you're only counting the out-of-pocket bill it can easily go over $2000.

So yeah, not a gross exaggeration.
