Open Letter To Jay Leno: "Thanks for thieving my shit." by justinisntfunnyin funny

[–]Manitcor 1 point2 points ago

It may help to clarify that I don't agree with the current state of the laws anyway. The current system exists simply because the major companies involved want to stem off market pressures to change business models.

I would much rather see these companies compete in an open and fair market than the system we have today.

Should there be systems that do these kinds of things? Sure. Not in the way they do now and not under the current legal structure.

EDIT: I'm not sure I have a problem with the OP doing this or the posting on the page. NBC got the benefit of using the video, why not parlay that into some publicity. Sure maybe there are other ways? Will some companies execs find it unfair and a pain in the ass? Likely not, and not nearly as much as these things tend to hurt individuals.

Sure I can. It's simply stupid to make a content rights system that does not even attempt to check something like the date. This is particularly true in the face of increased re-use of social media content in public broadcasts.

Content owners should not have to be expected to have to re-assert their rights to big media companies every time some entity makes a request with pretty much 0 evidence. The law is too loose and it is simply that way because the big content owners wanted to have latitude to shoot first and ask questions later. It makes due diligence on their side so much cheaper (like not paying to have a content system do something as simple as a date check).

I would have more pity, but IMO we give the content industries and owners far too many monopolies for far too long already.

NYC cyclist protests unfair fines by doing EXACTLY what the officer tells him to do. Hilarity ensues. by employedhipsterin videos

[–]Manitcor 2 points3 points ago

Just a heads up. In some cities/states bicycles are allowed to run through red lights. I thought the cyclists in Boston were assholes then I found out it is allowed there.

My biggest complaint is with bicycles that like to change lanes in the city unexpectedly or even cut over with very little space. It's the same issue I have with motorcycles too. I do my very best to keep my 4,000lb truck from crushing you, please at least do me the favor of giving me some space and time to stop. Your bike can stop on a dime. I can't

[–]Manitcor 17 points18 points ago

If that's the case then the developers and those running the system are negligent. Though I can't say I'm surprised since the takedown provision of the DMCA basically allows big content owners to "shoot em all and let the law sort em out if they can afford it"

Sounds like ContentID is a shit system then or someone is giving it false data. A simple date check on the original video against the first air date of the Leno episode should have been enough to make ContentID skip this video for takedown.

I accept the social media sphere for what it is. A bunch of typical people having a conversation. Not unlike what you would see in meatspace. Just like IRL I take what is said with a grain of salt and if I care, I look it up myself. I don't bitch at the person talking to me that they are wrong and complain that they could have just searched the internet with the smartphone in their pocket.

It is rare to find a community that consistently provides sources and does research. As much as I think we both might like it, it simply does not exist except in more focused communities or subs.

Most people apply a lot of the same social conventions in social media that they do in real life conversations. Understanding that makes the use of inaccurate information reasonable.

I, like you, would love to see everyone post the right facts and information every time. I however, unlike you, accept that this is simply not realistic in social media with few exceptions.

We are at an impasse.

You believe people should do this every time they post.

I know and accept that people won't do this and acting high and mighty about it is pointless.

I doubt we will come to an agreement here. You keep hoping/bitching for a fantasy. I will keep dealing with reality.

Congratulations, you are in the minority, welcome to the internet.

IMO one only looks like a fool by presenting something as a fact without a condition in front of it that indicates it needs further clarification. Which is not what the poster you responded to did.

I mean I don't see you being a non-lazy reader and posting helpful links as you have done here.

Also I don't see many sources in your assertions and since I am your prototypical lazy redditor I don't need/want to take the time to verify the veracity of a claim made by a random person on the internet unless I find it important at which point I would do the work myself rather than bitch you out about not posting a source or a fact correctly.

You did. THIS time.

Based on your post history you are just as lazy as the rest of us most of the time, for some reason you just happened to have a bug up your ass this time. Your catch phrase for ending a conversation seems to be "Shut the fuck up" rather than linking facts that does not speak well to your authority in this topic or your ability to have normal discourse, though considering your username I am not entirely surprised.

Well get off your lazy butt and look up the fact yourself, you are showing as much laziness as you claim others have. Welcome to the club. Here is your membership card.

The writer even was at least kind enough to let you know they were going from memory rather than a hard source. This should encourage you if you are not lazy and actually care to look it up for a source.

Sometimes people just want to have a conversation, is it really neccassary to spend 5-10 mins sourcing everything you say in a post?

It's bullshit like that that has made many people tired of reddit or at least /r/politics.

At the end of the day the same attitude you have could be turned on the readers.

"We're all sitting in front of a computer. We all have access to Google. If you can't be bothered to figure out whether what you are reading is bullshit or not, then you have no right to complain when you take what an anonymous person on the internet says is true when it is not."

St. Louis Cops Worry That In-Car Cameras 'Are Being Used Against Them': What's the world coming to when cops can no longer punch handcuffed prisoners or violate firearm rules with impunity? by davidreiss666in politics

[–]Manitcor 3 points4 points ago

What is it about this mentality that if you say something that you just deserve to be assaulted by the police.

Your words are not reason to get punched by police. I know a lot of people seem to like to think that is the way the world works. Police are expected to respond with a proportional response to do their job. Punching someone because you don't like what they said or motioned is not holding up the law. It's acting as judge, jury and jailer in the field and is not warranted for the simple use of words.

It does not matter if he went on a 5 min tirade about the cops parental lineage. The officer still cannot just punch him despite how much he might want to.

At least that is the way the system is supposed to work. Yet for some reason so many people have this mentality of trying to forgive or dismiss an officer's overuse of force because we don't know but maybe the other person "said something" to deserve it. It's insane. Simply insane.

IBM Faces The Perils Of "Bring Your Own Device": "After letting its employees use their own phones and tablets for work, the company confronted a flood of insecure apps from the open Web" by trot-trotin business

It's not about payment but availability. If the device is your personal phone as well you are more likely to be reachable at anytime.

Unless I am being paid for that kind of access to my time I would want the company phone I can turn off at 5pm.

From a practical perspective it is easier and better for customers to build a consistent machine capable of picking up everything and then use software to change the randomness rather than rely on a purposely flawed mechanical design to work with consistent randomness with all objects.

IMO the next killer will likely involve moving away from a network that aggregates all user data and becomes more of a directory of people with a presence registered with the directory.

We need an ecosystem of tools and software so that people can control their online presence rather than signing it (and all related data) over to a network.

[–]Manitcor 4 points5 points ago

Ballmer was key in pushing for changes/updates to the entire stagnating back-office line, pushing for enhancements to SQL server and for improvements to the .NET framework and toolkit to the point of flying past Java and quickly expanding its footprint in backoffice collaborative tools and office components.

Zune was a flop, Vista was a flop. Microsoft does so much more than most people realize. Consumer market exposure is only a percentage of their bottom line and not the most significant either.

The company has been a bureaucratic mess since the 90's, similar to IBM, that hasn't changed.

Shit article and fails to even categorize Microsoft correctly. The author seems to think Microsoft is a PC company. When did Microsoft become an OEM and how do changes in the consumer market products mean the company is in trouble when its back-office and development suites are doing so well? Oh yes and lets completely ignore the XBox.

He most likely developed this with company equipment on company time. Data entry employees are very rarely afforded a laptop or given access to the facilities to remotely manage data or bring it home with them.

He would also need the data entry system in question in order to test scripts. Coding blind at home and bringing it in is possible but highly improbable.
