Well, there hasn't been a Canadian team in the playoffs since the first round. So it gives Canadians a team to follow.

I just changed my major. Should I keep on my resumé the 2 years I spent in the other major? by madreusin AskAcademia

[–]MajorTunage -1 points0 points ago

I'm going to disagree with Kylearn a little bit. When you graduate all that will be on your resume is the year you graduated, so there won't appear to be a gap in your resume. Additionally, what's the point of putting a half completed degree on your resume, you didn't get a degree you just took some classes. Its similar to removing jobs that are not applicable to your career. I would personally not have it on there.

What's the best way to keep up with your favorite labels' releases? by king-ratin DJs

[–]MajorTunage 0 points1 point ago

So you're saying that people download music they've never heard? I wasn't aware that went on at all so I bow to your knowledge there.

Yep, many labels release promo-packs of artists on their labels, as an example. It usually isn't high quality and is often watermarked to mitigate piracy but I've found countless artists this way (and yes I do buy their stuff).

Take Beatport for example... You can only listen to a small portion of the song, how am I supposed to know what the rest of the song sounds like? Is the preview an accurate depiction of the song? I'll download stuff so I can listen to the whole song, and purchase the good tracks that I'll be playing in my sets. Somebody might say, "Hey you downloaded my track but you didn't purchase it" and I'll say: "Yeah I downloaded it, listened to it, and I just didn't like it (or it didn't fit in my set)." It might seen like an odd way of finding music but I want to preview the entire track, something which is generally not available.

A downloaded file =/= a lost sale (which is what many people seem to think).

Remember, we're not talking about regular music buyers here. DJ's are supposed to be music lovers, supposed to care about music and the artists who make the music they play? No?

I agree with you there, if you are a DJ who is getting paid to play music you better be fucking buying that shit. But that is just the way it is, labels need to branch out to survive.

Perhaps I'm just a sentimental old fool.

Perhaps, but it is sad to see independent labels go because of unfortunate circumstances.

[–]MajorTunage 1 point2 points ago

No, I'm saying somebody would download the tune, and like it enough to purchase it, if they didn't download it for free they might have never heard it in the first place. I'm saying a tiny proportion would pay for it because they were exposed to a the pirated track. Only a tiny proportion of people who download pirated tracks would pay for it, yes that's exactly what I said in my post.

I never said I had a solution, but people need to focus on what can bring in money... touring/merch etc. Piracy is a fact of life and it ain't going anywhere soon, so labels need to find other avenues of making money if piracy is such a concern.

any advice on making the move from house parties to......the next step? i dunno, bars/clubs/whatever, that's what im asking advice on. by CptSpauldingin DJs

[–]MajorTunage 1 point2 points ago

Get to know the promoters/bar owners. Go talk to them, see if they would be willing to have you for a demo night where you come and play for free but hopefully attract (or bring) a good group of people, if the night goes well they will likely invite you back. Also, put together some promo mixes to give out.

What's the best way to keep up with your favorite labels' releases? by king-ratin DJs

[–]MajorTunage -1 points0 points ago

No, I'm just saying you can't solely blame piracy. I mean, if 5000 people downloaded a song, how many of them would have been willing to purchase it in the first place? a small fraction I imagine. They are downloading something because it is readily available that they might have never purchased in the first place... On the other side downloading a track for free might give well needed exposure and result in somebody actually purchasing the track.

I just find that piracy is too easily the scapegoat when some sort of new business plan is actually required.

And I'm not arguing against your point that piracy will result in some lost sales.

What's the best way to keep up with your favorite labels' releases? by king-ratin DJs

[–]MajorTunage -2 points-1 points ago

Well, they're (the label owner) blaming piracy which does not mean it was solely piracy... Its easy to blame something on piracy and not your own shortcomings. Without doing more research I couldn't say much else but blaming piracy as the only reason the label failed just doesn't cut it.

My brother wants to DJ and produce EDM. How can I help him? by username303in edmproduction

[–]MajorTunage 1 point2 points ago

Going either way has it's merits. I personally started DJing because I found it fun and a lot easier than producing... Once you have heard tons of tracks and mixed them together you get a better idea of how to create a song and such. That's just my 2 cents.

Oh yeah? What labels have ceased to exist solely due to pirating? Do tell.

Cliche, I know, but why aren't I losing any weight? by rabbitinhatin P90X

[–]MajorTunage 1 point2 points ago

I did P90x without changing my diet and didn't lose weight... I did it with the 17-day diet and lost over 15lbs...

Weight loss is 10% exercise, 90% diet (non-scientific gneralization of course).

My brother wants to DJ and produce EDM. How can I help him? by username303in edmproduction

[–]MajorTunage 3 points4 points ago

Get him a cheap beginner (DJ) control surface for virtual DJ... You can find one (especially used) with that $200...

Otherwise get him Ableton Live (cracked obv. with your budget) and tell him to save up for the legit version (If he sticks with it)... You could probably get him a control surface for that too like a Novation launchpad. But somebody who is a beginner with production doesen't need a control surface at all, all you need is a mouse and a keyboard. Control surfaces will streamline production once he's learned the basics.

Best option: get him some tutorials for Ableton Live along with the actual program, Tom Cosm is what I would reccommend ($50 for all his tuts) and if you have enough leftover get him a cheap hercules or behringer controller for DJing.

I would recommend he focuses on DJing or production.

Make Thrift Stores Part of Your Routine by tr1st4nin frugalmalefashion

[–]MajorTunage 6 points7 points ago

Especially if you have lost weight (and are still losing) thrift stores are great for that transition time. I'm a little thrift-whore, I love going and getting outfits for a fraction of the price.

I've probably spent $250 thrifting in 2012 alone...I've found Levi 501's and 516's that look unworn and lots of good shirts etc... Only thing I never find is shoes b/c I'm a size 12 :(
