How high is the probability that Blizzard stores battle.net passwords in the clear? by mithalduin programming

[–]MagicWishMonkey 0 points1 point ago

First - I'm not claiming to be immune from brute forcing.

Second - the salt is unique per user, each salt is generated from a constant + permutation of user credentials.

Is that not secure? I know that a lot of people say you should store the salt in the db, but that seems fairly risky if someone manages to access your database. Maybe I'm missing something.

I'm sure the passwords are nicely salted.

The platform I'm working on right now generates a 64+ char string for the password, and then it gets salted and hashed. You're not going to brute force that, even if you have access to the physical database.

If all these new DBMS technologies are so scalable, why are Oracle and DB2 still on top of TPC-C? A roadmap to end their dominance. by greenrdin programming

My company is considering making the switch to Postgres here in a few months. Although MySQL seems to be good enough for the time being.

We're definitely not going to even consider Oracle/SQL Server, way too expensive for what you get. Although I do miss the tools quite a bit, both PL/SQL Developer and SQL Server Management Studio blow everything in MySQL/Postgre world away.

They have a hybrid nosql solution. MySQL is good for super fast reads and it's battle tested. That's why facebook isn't using Cassandra or something else. The worst decision facebook could make at this point would be to switch to Oracle or Microsoft

They need a custom solution. They would be much worse off with Oracle or SQL Server. They need a bigtable the solution.

I guess someone should let Facebook and Twitter know that MySQL isn't scalable.

American Pad & Paper, owned by Bain Capital, told all 258 workers they were fired. Security guards hustled them out of the building. They would be able to reapply for their jobs, at lesser wages and benefits, but not all would be rehired. by droivodin politics

[–]MagicWishMonkey 3 points4 points ago

Except Bain capital didn't only buy failing businesses.

They sometimes stacked debt on top of the companies – as Bain Capital did with AmPad – and then wrote themselves dividend checks from the borrowings.

This was standard practice for Bain. Saving the business was never part of the plan when these acquisitions were made.

Step 1 - Acquire a profitable small/medium sized business

Step 2 - Borrow against the business until it sinks

Step 3 - Walk away with millions of dollars

This was not a one time thing.

Are you tracking weight? If so, you'll want to store weight in a different table (something like userid/weight/date) so you won't lose information on updates.

Letting someone die of dehydration seems a lot more cruel than giving them an overdose of painkillers or something.

Saw something similar in Turks & Caicos, except it's mostly underwater and you can snorkel around it. Spent $100 to have someone take us to a private beach with a sunken ship to explore, best vacation ever.

And what happens if the market crashes and you lose everything after you retire? Society will get stuck with the bill regardless. What you suggest would not work, for obvious reasons.

Snake in my back door! by mondo8205in pics

[–]MagicWishMonkey 0 points1 point ago

I've been bitten by rat snakes lots of times, they are pretty harmless.

However, they emit an incredibly foul stink when they get scared, words can't really describe how bad it smells. The smell is way worse than the bite.

Cuts are fine, just don't couple cuts with tax breaks and make ridiculous claims about "balancing the budget".

You can't cut spending AND revenue to balance the budget, you'll end up back where you started.

... his plan doesn't involve balancing the budget (at least not for the next few decades).

He's cutting social programs to pay for extended tax breaks for the wealthy. That is not balanced.
