Cool, thanks. Basically, a bigger version of making a good post and then getting down-voted for it.

What is the worst advice you've ever received? by sophalopein AskReddit

I took a bag of dry laundry into work, having washed it at home and dried it at the launderette on my way to work.

A colleague asked why I didn't just save money by putting my wet laundry on the radiators in the call centre to dry instead.

It was one of the most preposterous things I have ever heard in my entire life, and she meant it - insisted with a straight face that I was missing a trick.

Yes, no parachute.

Just an area of extra fabric that he deployed to significantly slow his rate of vertical descent.

"Friend-zoned". I do not think it means what you think it means.

If you were truly 'friend-zoned', then she wouldn't have set you up with ANYONE, that's what sucks about the Friend Zone, and it's what makes it different from actually being friends with a chick.

That chick hasn't friend-zoned you - she is actually your friend. There's a difference.

What is the most computer illiterate thing you've witnessed? by Peppe22in AskReddit

Back in the track-ball mouse days, a librarian stopped me when I was cleaning the mouse. I had unscrewed the compartment and cleaning the scuzz off the inner spindles, and she, horrified, thought I was vandalising it.

What are some small, insignificant things that you judge people for? by WtfWhereAreMyClothesin AskReddit

[–]MagicSPA 1 point2 points ago

I've never understood people who get all shitty about how people want their steaks cooked. I 'prefer' my steak very well-done (although it's still fine other ways) simply because I like that caramelised, roasted-meat flavour. It makes no more sense to me that someone would get worked up about that than it would my preference for having really dark-brown toast.

Someone else's choice of steak style SHOULD be among the least significant things in any fellow diner's life. It should be no more their business than my preference for well-roasted coffee, or exceptionally dry wine.

OP, here is a serious offer - I'll give $100 to you or ANY person who can offer a convincing reason why how I prefer to have my steak cooked should matter a damn to anyone other than me.

F*ck it, the money's in my account right now, step right up.

Well, in that case, maybe I should have been fined and arrested separately for public urination and disorderly conduct, if we have to stick to the letter of the law, and if police officers can't just use their initiative to achieve a fair end.

BTW, I hope no-one's confusing 'operating outside the law' with 'protecting the public from the scum of the Earth, with no gain to themselves whatsoever'.

You are a worthy adversary. But I stick to the idea that cops can successfully use 'discretion' when using their judgement about how to handle a situation, even if it involves not doing what they're paid to.

It's the start of a slippery slope, but sometimes the 'right' thing isn't the same as the 'legal' thing.

I see where you're coming from, but I have been on the receiving end of 'fair' treatment from a cop who didn't do what they should have.

One cop asked why I was emerging from a park square zipping up my fly; I said I'd just taken a whizz as I had nowhere else to go. I had no choice, and the cop let me off. Surely the world would be mayhem if he we let EVERYONE piss anywhere they wanted. Fact is, I don't piss anywhere I like, the cop registered that and used his initiative - rightly.

Another cop saw me and my friend acting boisterously one day, climbing bus shelters and so on. She summoned me over to her car and asked us to hold out our hands. We thought we were about to get cuffs put on us, but instead he gently slapped our wrists in turn, saying "Don't...do...that...again!" We didn't.

Would I say it's wrong to let off EVERYONE who pisses in public? Yes.

Would I say it's wrong to either let off or slap EVERYONE who acts in a disorderly fashion in public? Yes.

If the cameras had been on those cops would they have acted differently? Yes.

But they used their initiative and acted in the right way, even though they didn't do what they were paid to do.

See where I'm going with this?

Sorry, having seen Jacqueline Saburido's face, I have to say that those cops were doing a great public service by snagging that drink driver that way.

Obviously, cops should be monitored to ensure they are serving the people, but in this case I think they WERE serving the people. I have no problem with 'entrapment' if it involves cops using their initiative to unambiguously make the world a better and safer place.

J. Edgar Hoover himself distinguished between 'justice' on one hand and 'law and order' on the other. I have no problem whatsoever with the cops in this case doing the same thing.
