Health chief warns: age of safe medicine is ending - Antibiotic crisis will make routine operations impossible and a scratched knee could be fatal by JackIsidorein worldnews

[–]M4sterSh4ke 1 point2 points ago

Then he is incredibly short sighted. New approaches are being discovered regularly including, for example, taking advantage of the ways in which cells communicate to effectively turn off the virulent features of a bacteria. TED talk on the subject. This method would not have the same problem of eventual resistance as antibiotics as the bacteria is not actually killed.

In addition to this, we are just entering an age where we are able to sequence genes of an organism extremely quickly, and this will only get quicker over time. The more genes we sequence, the more we will understand what they do and this will allow us to create drugs which target features that are specific to the organism that we want to kill. This technology is already being used to target cancer during chemotherapy without causing as much harm to the patient as it typically does. I dont have a source for this one but this treatment was used on Steve Jobs... Sadly a little too late.

You know there's a reason why you require higher frames in games right? There's blur in film, meaning that its a lot harder to see where one frame ends and another begins. Playing a game at 24 fps and it is noticeably (though not unplayably) stuttery. That's the main reason (other than aesthetics) that some games have motion blur added these days. Personally I usually cant see much of a difference past 35-40fps.

Yup, thats what I do too. But what about your laptop? Most laptops are a lot thinner than a UK plug these days and that's only going to become more true over time. Laptops are going to be close to as thin as tablets in the coming 5 or so years.

Chill out, you're probably right about a few of those criticisms but the way you said it made you sound like a prick.

As a matter of interest, why does it matter how close the live/neutral terminals are to eachother? Surely they would be insulated from eachother when they're in the socket, which should be the only time that they have electricity going through them anyway. I'm happy to be told I'm wrong though.

I agree, it doesn't necessarily mean that you can, but the fact is that with a bit of investment and thought you definitely could. A bit of redesign of this product and the fuse cover could be placed at the front. I don't see much else that's dangerous about this design. Even if the device needed to be made a bit larger to be safe, it would take a lot to make it anywhere near as large as the standard UK plug, or even designs like this http://www.thinplug.com/.

But the things we use electricity for certainly have. Small portable devices make a thinner plug design important for anyone who wants to be able to charge their devices away from home.

Well l'd say that if the plug is more awkward to carry than the device you want to power (as is the case with mobile phones etc) then a charger that's as portable as the device would definitely be useful.

Reddit's SOPA Blackout Admirable, but Google and Facebook Must Follow by EquanimousMindin technology

[–]M4sterSh4ke 0 points1 point ago

A complete blackout would cost the companies involved huge sums of money and would therefore probably not be acceptable to them. Why not just have the home page redirect a piece describing the problems with SOPA etc with a link at the end to go to the site as normal. That would still reach millions of people while costing the companies barely anything and inconveniencing no one.

The population of the US and the UK is so much higher than those tribes. The percentage of people fighting on the front line of the wars is also likely to be far lower in the UK and US when compared to those tribes.

My son uses full words, sentences and proper punctuation when he texts. And he is (gently) mocked for it by his friends. Hell, according to his facebook friends, he is famous for it at his school. Is being literate not cool now? by maybe-tomorrowin AskReddit

What, why? People use text speak in texts for a reason... It's quicker and uses less space in a text. Anyone can use full sentences and punctuation in a text, but why would you when everyone your texting would understand you if you shortened it?

I'm gonna go ahead and say that teachers have one of the most important jobs a human can have, and that when I see or hear people undercut the importance of what teachers do, it infuriates me. by [deleted]in reddit.com

I agree that teachers have a hugely important job. I don't believe that the problem lies solely with others undercutting the importance of their jobs though. Teachers themselves are often a big part of the problem. There is nothing like a passionate teacher who knows their stuff and really goes out of their way to help children learn. But the majority seem to have either lost that over the years, or never had any passion for teaching to begin with. I think there should be a lot more control over who is fit to teach and who is not because reading from a book and saying do exercise 1 to 6 is NOT teaching.

You definitely didn't understand what he was saying and were annoyed by it. I cant see any jargon in there that's unnecessary. In fact I think the only jargon in there is .NET and XNA.

99.9% of dubstep sucks. There, I said it. by crawsomein entertainment

Personally I love a lot of dubstep, thought a lot of it is also terrible. But I can completely understand why someone wouldn't like most of it/would think it all sounds the same. I don't, but I think different people sorta tune into different bits of different music so I can see why, especially with music that is so different from pretty much every other kind of music.

TIL that gravity, like light, has a speed. by NickDouglasin todayilearned

If you think of gravity as an extension of the actual physical size of the planet then its easier to understand why it is instant. So imagine the size of our planet was the size of its gravitational field. It isn't travelling faster than the speed of light necessarily, it's just really big

I had pretty much this exact thing happen to me, with the buzzing and everything. I don't remember how it came about but I remember waking up and not being able to move with a buzzing which got louder and louder as well as more high pitched over time. It was weird and scary at the time but afterwards it was just intriguing. One question... do you have a computer in your room or something else with a fan. I only ask because I presumed that the buzzing I heard was my computer from some weird altered state of perception.
