The story of Your Dekalb Farmers Market as it turns 35 by IKilledLauraPalmerin Atlanta

[–]LovableContrarian 0 points1 point ago

Well, the article itself said they are worked to the bone. And I personally have (accidentally) heard employees discussing how happy they are to be going home.

That was an amazingly interesting article, as I am a long-time YDFM customer.

Though, let's be honest. That article was rather biased. It somewhat implied that the guy is a philanthropist, saving war refugees from deportation. Yet...

1) He won't give them health insurance 2) He cancelled his english courses 3) It's implied that he works them to the bone 4) That bit about him firing workers for not following his motivational system was odd.

Let's be honest. He hires immigrants because its cheaper. It just so happens that his source of cheap labor has a positive externality -- that doesn't make him a philanthropist.

Awesome place, awesome history, amazingly successful guy. But let's not pretend that he is anything other than a business man.

Hi r/Emory! i wanted to some help getting a better idea of professors of Biology at Emory. by Moklomiin Emory

[–]LovableContrarian 3 points4 points ago

Haha I was just messing with you man. I'm not in the biology department, but I've taken classes in a LOT of departments over the years (from business to political science to chemistry to history), and I have been thoroughly impressed with all of them. I wouldn't worry for a second that biology isn't up to par. Emory has a secretive trend where they close weak departments. We used to have a dentistry school, but Emory shut it down due to falling rankings. It's a rather selfish and dangerous practice, but the point is this: if an Emory department remains, it's because it's a solid department.

Also, you are a senior... where? In high school? In college? Your post doesn't make it clear whether you are applying for Emory as an undergraduate or a graduate. You better work on these writing skills, they'll kill you for this at Emory lol.

How come disinfectant cleaners need 5 minutes to kill germs, but antibacterial soap doesn't? by LovableContrarianin askscience

[–]LovableContrarian[S] 0 points1 point ago

Yeah I have ready studies that claim antibacterial soap is generally unnecessary, but I guess I am asking if it is "unnecessary" at the microbial level. Is it unnecessary because regular soap will wash germs away, so the antimicrobial agent killing the germs is overkill? Or is it unnecessary because the antimicrobial agent actually isn't killing germs (due to the briefness of contact?)

So, in a nutshell... There is absolutely no reason to Dawn to be antibacterial, because it won't have time to kill germs anyway?

What has been your most painful physical experience? by forgetabouttheclownin AskReddit

[–]LovableContrarian 0 points1 point ago

When I was 10, I fell out of a go-kart going ~30 mph.

I slid for what seemed like forever.

In the end, my side was basically... Gone.

Amazingly I have very little scarring. Dat little kid healing power.

Scottish guy explains the ins and outs of a news reporter's secret pen trick. by devilock420in videos

[–]LovableContrarian 6 points7 points ago

What a terrible argument. The number of films produced is meaningless. Bollywood films aren't exported at near the rate of Hollywood films. Also, it isn't just movies. American culture is consumed around the world in various forms. Finally, we are talking about accents, not entirely we languages. A Scottish guy being able to understand American accents is an entirely different animal than a Scottish guy spontaneously learning Hindi. Frankly, your argument is borderline retarded in pretty much every conceivable aspect, and I legitimately and sincerely hope you go to a bookstore and study up on some basic principles of logical thinking.

I'm wanting to learn Mandarin Chinese, is Rosetta Stone my best option? by locust64in answers

[–]LovableContrarian 4 points5 points ago

Rosetta Stone gets a lot of hate, but I think it is a great program - used as a supplement. You really have to take Chinese classes to properly learn the basics and the grammar. Rosetta stone will fail you HARD in this regard. But as a program to help build your vocabulary, Rosetta stone is a fun way to pass the time. But every Chinese student I know has dozens of tools at their disposal: books, websites, Chinese friends, software, Chinese TV, etc. looking for some sort of definitive program will let you down. As part of a larger spectrum of tools, however, I think Rosetta stone is fine.

Jackie Chan and his stunt double by davvikin pics

[–]LovableContrarian 1 point2 points ago

How has no one pointed out that Jackie Chan has an entire stunt team that does EVERYTHING FIRST to make sure it's safe? Look, the dude deserves respect. And, when he was younger and less famous, he did do his own stunts. But now, he has more stuntmen than most movie studios.
