TROPHY CASE

Attorney-General: South Sudanese illegal migrants can be deported back to their country by BoiledGizzardin Israel

[–]LineNoise 0 points1 point ago

Were it safe, they should.

The problem in Israel is that the government and its offices refusing to participate in the process almost entirely.

With refugee status determinations conducted there is an internationally agreed upon process for handling both temporary and permanent resettlement. But Israel essentially does not perform RSDs for Eritreans, Sudanese and some other groups of African asylum seekers. Instead a kind of temporary protection status is handed out without question with RSDs only being performed if explicitly sought by the individual in question and, even then, so rarely as to be almost laughable.

The situation in South Sudan is still dire. The aid agencies and government facilities are already working well beyond their limits dealing solely with internally displaced people and their are 10s of 1000s of people due to be exiled from the North to the South over coming months.

Combine that with the season, ongoing violence and cross-border skirmishes in many places and an uptick in both internal displacement and international movements in the last few months, now is not the time to be adding further numbers to an already extremely strained situation.

If refugee status determinations were actually conducted, most likely would be.

Israel hands African asylum seekers/immigrants/whatever-term-you'd-like-to-use a temporary protection status. Refugee status must be actively sought out, waiting lists are enormous, determinations extraordinarily few and the act of seeking it out places the person at quite a high risk of being detained.

Unsurprisingly, many choose not to push the point.

And unfortunately, this is why I've just spent most of a week packing original documents into locked boxes and sending them back to Switzerland.

If they do start sending people back to South Sudan it will be a truly appalling decision. The resources in place won't be able to handle the existing displaced population over coming months. Adding any extras onto the expected numbers of exiles from the North that have already started to arrive is simply unconscionable, at least in my opinion.

Try "Some maintaining of a second (or third) interface design."

If the change in aspect ratio only allowed elements shared between both a 3:2 and 71:40 interface to be resized it would be a monumentally pointless addition.

If, on the otherhand, the space is actually usable in a realistic manner the developers will need to design and maintain an additional layout until such time as they could reasonably drop support for 3:2 aspect phones.

It's a much, much more awkward move than the switch to 2x sized resources for the retina displays.

Official Google Blog: We’ve acquired Motorola Mobility by humortogoin technology

[–]LineNoise 14 points15 points ago

Motorola recently received sales injunctions against Microsoft in Germany on the back of standards essential patents for H.264 that are licensed under a Fair, Reasonable And Non-Discrimatory requirement.

Where Microsoft are paying a capped $6.5 million per year for 2,339 other patents in the H.264 pool that would be nominally worth around $60 million per year, Motorola was demanding an estimated $4 billion or more (2.25% of the sale price for each product sold) for its 50 group of patents.

FRAND abuses are a major issue as those FRAND agreements are basically essential to the process of establishing international standards in technology.

A change in aspect ratio would by an utter disaster for smaller developers.

Now, are they going to stop the FRAND patent abuse?

Netanyahu: African migrants could overrun Israel... by wowcarsin Israel

[–]LineNoise 3 points4 points ago

If there's any action to back the latest ramping up of the rhetoric this could get very, very nasty.

Several in the government have done a pretty good job of driving utter hysteria on this issue over recent months, often flying in the face of their own departments figures or RIC work, whilst somehow managing to ignore almost everyone who actually wants to work towards improving the situation in a sane manner.

I guess why do the hard yards when pandering to prejudice and ignorance works just as well in the polls? Lowest common denominator politics at its worst.

Thanks for posting this. If there's any follow up to this over the next few days it would explain a few things I've seen on my end of this issue.

Nice to see someone cutting through the recent hysteria. Not surprised that it's Sigal doing it either.

The truth about 'refugees' by Kaffirin Israel

[–]LineNoise 2 points3 points ago

Putting aside numerous other problems with the author's argument, this paragraph really takes the cake for sheer stupidity.

In Eritrea, by the way, a dictatorship rules and there is mandatory army service of 15 years. Most infiltrators are draft-dodgers; people who simply did not want to join the army. One can understand them, but this is not our problem.

So, by the authors own admission here, most infiltrators aren't refugees because they're just fleeing compulsory military service in an oppressive dictatorship.

Riiiiiiight.

No, it's quite literally a human rights issue. UHDR Articles 6 and 7. We could add Article 16 for good measure.

Should it matter? Equality before the law is a human rights issue.

If you're not in a rush, do a bit of research into some of the tailors who tour from Hong Kong.

They bring samples, you get measured up here and they get it made up back home and ship it out. Turn around time is normally pretty good and quality is often exceptional. Just have to do a little digging to find out who is worth dealing with.
